Round Table: "Life During Wartime"

by at . Comments

While fans gather in our Life During Wartime" include all things Dr. Hunt, being the Chief, and the unconventional but entertaining Mark/Callica love triangle ...

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode?

McCritic: When Callie invited Mark for a drink and said, "You're good for more than just sex," I melted. Let's hope a non-lesbian feels the same way soon and falls for this hilarious man!

missingBurke: I liked Hunt's willingness to take advice from Derek and Sloan, saying this is day one for him as well. Just when you think you have this guy figured out, there's another component to him. I also loved Cristina's classic "RUN!"

iheartizzie: I'm going to go with Richard's heartfelt apology (or non-apology) to Meredith. He's made a lot of mistakes in his life and it's not always easy to admit them, let alone make things right, but it was very big of him to try.

  • Callie Torres and Erica Hahn Kiss
  • Marcus

2. More likely to end up as a couple: Callie and Erica, or Callie and Mark?

iheartizzie: After this past episode, Callie and Mark seem more likely to me. Will new intern Sadie be a better match for Erica than Callie, who ends up with Mark?

McCritic: Callie and Mark. The former is scarcely even hiding her reservations about Erica. Callie may have gotten involved in that relationship because men were letting her down; but Mark is now showing her that we sometimes get it right.

missingBurke: I'm not sure, but I am enjoying the evolution of the Sloan character. We learn a little bit more about him every week - something Grey's Anatomy is really good at - without sacrificing his trademark sarcastic one-liners.

3. Can Bailey be the Chief?

missingBurke: I think Bailey has proven to be a natural leader and teacher, one who leads by example and offers just the right balance of tough love and encouragement. I do worry about her not spending enough time at home, however.

McCritic: Not if she wants to maintain her marriage. Whatever happened to spending more time at home with the two Tucks anyway?

iheartizzie: They're both the best in the business - and have similar problems finding a work/life balance. She might as well be mini-Chief!

4. Should Meredith continue to read her mother's diaries?

McCritic: I don't really care... as long as this yawn-inducing story line doesn't continue to be the focus of the Mer/Der relationship.

iheartizzie: The armchair psychologist in me would tell Mer, look, girl, you've got to put down the diary. You've come so far. Ellis is gone, and you have to move forward, not relive the past by reading her innermost thoughts from decades past.

missingBurke: You know, I thought this was interesting the first time, but are they just using this to create faux Mer-Der tension at this point? Meredith deserves to be happy, and I get the feeling this is just a form of self-loathing.

5. Dr. Hunt: A great addition? Or the best addition?

iheartizzie: This guy's awesome. Just the kind of guy the hospital needs to shake things up, but a little damaged in his own right beneath that exterior.

missingBurke: I loved Burke. He was my absolute favorite Grey's Anatomy character. For that reason, it's hard to see Cristina having a romantic interest in anyone else. That being said, I do enjoy the character of Dr. Hunt. He's growing on me quickly.

McCritic: The greatest. Grey's Anatomy does a superb job of integrating new cast members into the show. Dr. Hunt has a solid back story, a possible love interest and an enemy in PETA. I'm a fan.

Interesting how there are rumours circulation that Sara Ramirez will be leavin the show as well after ep 15. It seems that Ramirez wants to head back to Broadway. But with Shonda's statement, I doubt it's true. Then again, stranger things have happened.

And stop watching. This thursday is Brooke's last episode... don't watch any more... if you even watch this one.
Those are about our only options. Perhaps if we complain as much as those who were against it did... they'll bring her back. Although, I doubt she'd come back after this. I certainly wouldn't. I guess Brooke lovers around the world will just have to hope that she'll get picked up on a great show of her own.

Exactly, Shred. I think that having Erica have this huge revelation and then get left behind by Callie would be excellent for her development as a character. And if they were willing to explore same-sex possibilities for Callie in the future, why rewrite Sadie as a heterosexual? They can't possibly be entertaining the idea of introducing yet ANOTHER character... the show is already too cast-heavy to be able to give any of the storylines the attention/time they deserve. Let's not forget that Shonda isn't the one who fired Brooke - the network did. What Shonda released in her statement is probably how she feels, but evidently her feelings are very much trumped by the network. For real, if the gay marriage on Brothers & Sisters goes under before the end of sweeps, we'll know that something is seriously up at ABC.

UPDATE: Shonda Rhimes has just released the following statement in response to this story: "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season." If chemistry between the two was the case, why not just change the storyline? Why fire her? Very fishy...

Interesting, given that they've rewritten Melissa George's character to be straight, and ABC fired Rebecca Romijn, who plays a transwoman, from Ugly Betty. I'm not sure how a network that fired Isaiah Washington for using an antigay slur and that had the cast of Grey's do PSAs for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation can turn around and start purging its primetime lineup of openly LGBT characters... I'll be curious to see how long the gay marriage on Brothers & Sisters lasts. I only began watching Grey's last season as a result of the Callie and Erica storyline (I'm a gay woman, and it's rare to see lesbian relationships portrayed in even a remotely realistic way on television), and I find every other character on the show to be pretty darn irritating (except for Sloan, he's a keeper), so suffice to say I'll be tuning in to the Office and 30 Rock after this week's episode.

what's up with all the cardio-thoracic suregeons being written out of the show and fired?! they are dropping like flies! 3 attendings already left the show, addy burke & now erica =[

Avatar

SERIOUSLY!!!!! WHAT THE F*CK!!!!! Callica was such a great storyline, it showed that it doesn't matter what your sexuality is, and showed great support for the gay/lesbian/bi community in the world.. ABC sucks ass for firing her.. Grey's is going to suck with out callica.. =[ we already dont get enough merder lovin' time as it is.. and now they freaking write brooke smith out of the show.. my day couldnt get any worse.

Avatar

OH My! brooke is leaving?..i learned to like her as erica, and also when they chose her as replacement for burke's role as a surgeon..although i didn't feel that erica and callie have the chemistry..i still like them both..and i hate abc for firing erica, cardio will no longer be hardcore..i think callie and mark have more chemistry..i'm gonna miss callica though..
it seemed too fast for alex and izzie..shonda should have given izzie and george more time..they act as if nothing happened between the two of them..
and I'm dying to see more MERDER scenes like before..i really love the couple..derek should ask mer to spend the weekend with him again now that they are couples..they have all the reason to be away together..

Count me in SaraRamirezFan!!! I am so mad right now. This is ridiculous.

Are you surprised? This is the show that dropped Gizzie because of a few very vocal haters, some who hated them because TR is gay in real life, didn't you think the extremely loud homophobes would scare them into dropping Callica too Once the show let haters scare them into dropping one storyline, they'll drop others after. The haters know their tactic work too, just whine extra loud and threaten to quit. ABC are cowards and Shonda will do their bidding. Not only are Callica gone, but all the new gay characters are being rewritten as hetero according to Kristen. And TR, their gay actor, gets no airtime anymore. Homophobia and shallowness rules Grey and I for one am tired of it. I loved both Gizzie and Callica and they got killed by haters.

Grey's Anatomy Season 5 Episode 5 Quotes

Erica: This is her angio? That thing is wrapped around five major arteries.
Miranda: It's bad, but I've got some ideas.
Erica: Good for you! Try them on someone who might actually live.

Erica: Don't get emotional Bailey. No one likes a girl who gets emotional.
Miranda: Still. I would like you on my team.
