Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Izzie's Cancer in Remission?

Or not? This item from E! Online's spoiler Q&A this morning seems to suggest that our girl may not be out of the woods just yet when the new season begins in September ...

Q: Do you have any news on Grey's Anatomy?

A: Looks like Grey's Anatomy is currently casting an oncology resident for the second episode of Season Six. Is Dr. Izzie Stevens' cancer in remission or not? Hmmm...

I love Katie but nobody NOBODY is a better actor than TR Knight and no characetr is better than him. I'd much rather Izzie leave than him, especially since I hate AI. Gizzie was much better.

You people are so friken mean! George and Izzie were like the best ones, Christina is the worse one, she is heaps bossy and she is just anoying and rude, none of them should leave and its not the directors of the show making them leave its their choice coz they dont wanna be on GA anymore so just let them make their decision without all this crap!

George may not have had an official solo surgery, but don't forget the heart in the elevator!! If you think about it, he had a taste of surgery the others waited ages for... I feel it's worth mentioning that shows like this tend not to rely on a strict timeline. For example, when dealing with the 'dead baby bike race', that episode and the following one were consectutive days in the show, yet there are others that are weeks apart in the story. That's the wonder of filming and fictitous stories, there is no rigidity or structure, you can play around with it as much as you want. Try not to be so picky and focus on enjoying the story and following our fantastic residents along their journey wherever it may lead them!

    Anuflas,

Time works differently in GA-timeline, and you are right that the SP was their halfway point in their 2nd year of residency. I don't know how creative the writers are going to specialize the characters because realistically speaking, after the GS-residency, you can do fellowships in the following subspecialities:
    -cardiothoracics
    -plastics
    -surgical oncology
    -trauma
    -peds surgery

Neuro and ortho are their own residencies, like OB/GYN. If the writers stay to realism, the residents can go in any one of the GS-subspecialities but not go into neuro or ortho, or they'd have to do another residency program.

I think Izzie saw the comparison to George as good though. She said he worked harder than everyone and never walked over anyone to get ahead and she'd be honoured to be the new him. Izzie always saw the amazing in George the others didn't, and we George fans saw.

She saw his good heart, his hard work, and his talent as a doctor just like Burke and Owen did and all those doctors who wrote all those glowing reference letters about George.

It showed the connection between George and Izzie. It was one of my favorite scenes of the year.

    Ace,

I believe that by the end of this season they already finished their second year of residency. By the SP they were halfway through their second year. Assuming that this season was in an average of a 6 month span, they finished their second year. It's time for them to choose a specialty.

Too bad that the timeline is so screwed up. It's even worse, when Derek asked Izzie about the date and she said 2009, when in GA timeline we're supposed to be about 2007. They need to clarify this up.

    Barb,

No offense, but when they called her the new O'Malley it wasn't because of that. Mer, Cris, and Alex all noted that she wasn't even in the OR anymore and called her like that because she was left behind, like George was.

Unfortunately, George didn't catch up. He, as well as Izzie, didn't get his solo surgery. He was a good amount of time behind and even if he did manage to find an area of interest (totally surprised, swore he'd be more into General) he wasn't at the level that the rest of them are.

Sad that he'll never get the shot.

They meant she was the new O'Malley because she has his good heart and sensitivity and humanity. That was a compliment, and Izzie took it as one. She said she'd be honouyred to be the new him as she should be. George was awesome!

George did catch up to them. He passed his intern exam the second time around, and got to be a resident just like the rest of them. He wasn't behind when he died. In fact he was being groomed to be a trauma surgeon by owen, which was pretty impressive. Then he quit.

I'll miss George so much. I already miss him.

    Jude,

All the original five finished their internship. That's why they are all second-year residents. And within the GA-timeline, she's only been a patient for maybe a month at most; granted even if her cancer goes into her remission, it would be difficult for her to catch up, but within hospital heirarchy, she won't be "held" back per se. A General Surgery residency takes anywhere between 5 to 7 years, the first being the intern-year, so while some like Christina can finish the GS-resideny in 5 years, maybe it'll take Izzie 6 or 7. She would still be a third-year resident next year (in GA-time).
