For hourly workers yes, and they must compensated accordingly for it. Considering CA is the MOST pro-labor state ever, there would be major issues had that kind of shit been viewed as illegal.
KH, along with other actors, are highly-compensated in their salary so the labor laws are a little different. Also, their employment is based on their contract which I'm sure has a clause in regards to working long shifts.
Doctors for example (being salaried employees either nominally compensated or highly-compensated), especially during residency, can work 110-120 hours a week. It was only recently that the RRC has mandated an 80-hour work limit and that limit was imposed by the RRC, not California State Labor Law.
So it's all under the basis of a contract.
There is no labor law out there that imposes a work limit on adults, only on how that adult is compenstated when it surpasses normal time and into overtime.
Btw, California, being so pro-labor, has their OT start immediately after an 8-hour shift for their non-exempt employees. I could work 17 hours in one shift and get paid overtime for the 9 hours even though by the end of the week, I barely make 40.
The problem here is that KH has a tendency to make 'jokes' about GA, that end up not being funny but hurtful to the people who work there. Which was clearly the sentiment that ABC's president had. There is no need to joke about it and repeat it on several shows.
The big deal is that she didn't let it out with her husband or friends, she went out on national television to say it. You would think she'd learn.
I had to do some shifts that long and I don't get to 'joke' about it on national television to have some sympathy.
Speaking your mind shouldn't result in being disrespectful.
I am an extremely sarcastic person and I didn't find that funny.
Nao,
I was under that impression as well. I don't know if LA bends the rules. It'd be interesting to see how labor contracts work there.

I think the newspapers and gossip cloumns have picked up on KH speaking her mind, and will exploit situations like this to sell stories.

I'm sure all of you have complained after working a long shift before - why should Katherine be any different to the rest of us? At the end of the day, it's still just a job to her.
Anyway, I was under the impression that working a shift that long was illegal? Or is it not like that in the US? I had to sign a disclaimer at work to say that I wouldn't sue them for working more than 45 hours a week!!!

Brooke,
I agree; I seen the clip and I thought she was joking. What has become of this world? Can't anyone be allowed to joke and have fun anymore? GEEEZZZZ people..........live a little, laugh a lot, and take things for what they are! Stop overthinking.......
Katherine, if you read this YOU ROCK!!!!! Who cares if people think you were serious....laugh it off!
Angela Says: August 11th, 2009 10:09 AM
I think people seriously need to calm down. I've never in my life have ever had to work that long. Always an 8hrs shift so I think she has a right to say she is tired wheither she's joking or not.
OMG - Mr. McPherson did you even see the interview. She was joking on late night tv. Talking about an exhausting 17 hour day. She was trying to tease that it shouldn't be that hard, but that's okay, cause we are doing some amazing things. Haven't we all put in 17 hour days at one time or another. Did we like them? No. Did we say something to our significant other or girlfriends that it was a Bi- - h, to have to work that long. So, what is the big deal. Cut her some slack would you please or your comments Mr. McPherson are gonna drive her away.

You is right jess, because she tries and is clever, but i don't like this joke. She talks about only her and then people talks always about hers.KH is an only diva and with this i say all.Ops now i'm here with david letterman a famous show and now i talk about ABC.She is tired ,she works many hours, she is poor star ....ahhhhh couldyou do me a favour dear HK?shut up,please!
jess Says: August 11th, 2009 2:22 AM
Evidently sarcasm is totally lost on 99% of the population.
I can't stand KH, and even I could tell she was being SARCASTIC with her comment about the 17 hour day. She was on Letterman, you know, where everything is said sarcastically? She was playing to her audience. I thought she was funny. People need to lighten up and leave her alone.
Annie Says: August 10th, 2009 10:26 PM
The thing is though she repeated the same boring joke like on 4 shows, so why the insistence if it's only a joke? It's a really boring one too.
She should have pointed out what they did to accommodate her too. That would have make the "joke" easier to take.
Finally people are starting to call up on KH. It's about time. Joke or no joke, what she said what inappropiate and like Jen said, it was all to accomodate to her promoting schedule. She needs to edit her jokes or make new ones. As long as they don't involve whining.
Although the KH thing isn't new, is anyone here worried about the new cast additions? The cast is long enough as it is and now we are having more members? I really don't like the sound of this.
sarah Says: August 10th, 2009 8:52 PM
Oh come on, she was joking!!. Why everything she said has to be taken the wrong way?. Why everybody has to talk bad about her?. Apparently she can't even make a joke because people, that apparently is too sensitive will taken badly. For the record, I already knew Katherine much before Grey's Anatomy and I loved her.
I find it annoying. As a some already wrote, nobody knew her before Grey's. Considering the hard economics times we all feel, she is lucky to work. I work full time and I am a full time mother. I do work 17 hours days (sometimes more) for a very very very very (etc,...) small fraction of her salary, almost 49 weeks a year.
She makes me mad. For me, her cancer can come back anytime and kill her !
Lauren Says: August 10th, 2009 6:42 PM

here's a part of the article
Whoops...Katherine Heigl probably shouldn't have gone on the "Late Show With David Letterman" and complained about how long her first day of shooting back on the "Grey's Anatomy" set was...considering it's now been revealed that it was her fault. It's been reported that the reason that shooting took 17 hours was that everyone had to work around Heigl's schedule because she was busy promoting her movie "The Ugly Truth." These days, the truth sure is making Katherine look a little ugly...
Kathy Says: August 10th, 2009 6:11 PM
I think they are just making a big deal. All she said was that she was tired cause of working 17 hrs. Their making it as Dramatic as they can. Just my opinion.
jen Says: August 10th, 2009 6:01 PM
Okay it's a long day and yes she may be tired but I read somewhere on the net that she(KH)forgot to mention that the reason she had worked a 17 hour shift was because they had to change the schedule for her...so she could go advertise her movie. I don't think she should have said anything, joking or not if that is true.
liz Says: August 10th, 2009 6:01 PM

I realize that there are a lot of people without jobs right now who might take some kind of offense to that comment but, damn, give the girl a break! It's getting to the point where you can't make a joke about anything because somebody's feelings are going to get hurt. People need to lighten up!
Callie: I don't wanna have kids if it means I can't be with you. Arizona: We'll have kids. We'll have all kinds of kids... I can't live without you and our 10 kids.
