Now that the news have sit down with me, I guess I can organize my ideas better.
ER changed dynamics when Mark Greene died. S9 is my favorite season so far, but I'll admit that the change from Mark being the one to 'set the tone' to Carter was a transition that took years.
I think that GA is doing the same but the problem is that GA has been a show that has invested a good time in the development and issues of the fab 5 (or now, four) and have left some of the other main characters (like Derek, for one) sorta in the air.
In S6 case, three main characters were so much investment was made (Mer, George, and Izzie) are disappearing at the same time and it is expected for the other original characters (Derek, Bailey, Cristina, Alex, and the Chief) to take over with the relatively new characters (Arizona, Callie, Owen, Lexie, and Mark) to 'cover up' this 'disappearances' while the transition is made.
We are talking about 10 characters that can cover it up. Why three more? Ther

15 years!??? I hope that's not true. GA is not soap.
I'm George fan and now i hear that more characters may leave. Like Izzie or MerDer. So i just want to see what some of you are going to say when your favourite character is gone. I really want to see if you are still saying things like "if you don't like it, don't watch it", "it's Shonda show, not yours", you know stuff like that.
I absolutely love GA, but I really think the show should finally be put to an end. I thought this was supposed to be the last season, and I think it should be; that way they could tie loose ends and stop trying to revive the show, when, clearly, it's ready to go.

Ok. I get you guys get frustrated at Greys and Shonda but I think you guys should at least give it a chance. So they're getting a few new cast members. If you are getting so mad about it, do what I do. Go to youtube and watch fan made music vids about Grey's and some of the best moments from each season. Just look at how far we've come from bombs, syph and losing our panties.
Maybe some people are leaving. Maybe some new people are coming. I know that Mer kinda puts the Grey in Grey's Anatomy but I'm sure Ellen doesn't want to give birth in the middle of filming a TV show (that would be a little embarrassing...) but the bottom line is: stick with it. For all we know, this could be one of the best seasons in Grey's Anatomy's history

what a bunch of whiners....when you have a hit show then you can start bitching about what direction it is going....seriously! If you are so disappointed in the direction of the show then find a new hobby. I am tired of hearing, "If so and so leaves or if so and so happens I will not watch the show." Then don't. We won't miss you.
The season has not even started yet and you are complaining like a bunch of babies....
I love the show. I love all of the characters and hello the majority of the characters we love are new ones.
Please...stop all the crying!!

I think it's great that they're giving Katherine Heigl a break so that she can still film, and build up her career-she's gifted, and she should-but adding new characters and trying to extend the show for 15 years? I wonder how that would even work...would the show end up becoming (Lexie) Grey's Anatomy? I know I'd miss the core cast after seasons 6 and 7, and I really love the show, but sometimes it's better for a show to end while the writing is still great, rather than try to extend itself for too many years. I used to watch Friends, and loved it until about season 6 or 7, when it became somewhat formulaic, and lost some of its creativity. I really don't want that to happen to Grey's.

why they can't keep those stars in the show? instead of keeping them, they just wanna add some people more. hello...if you can't handle the original ones, what makes you think that you can handle another?
and what's with izzie being fired? it doesn't make any sense

I'm already not liking this next season! I want the original cast to have more air time not share it with new people! I mean one or two new people is fine..I love Arizona and I love Callie and I loved Addison...so yea adding new people every once in a while is fine..but not too many at one time and come one give our regulars some air time!!!

So disappointed by this news, I would rather 7 years of the core cast and great storylines focusing on them than this relentless adding of more characters, which GA so does not need. I stuck with the show through the down turn but I am now not hopeful for the future of this show. As for KH , I really wish she would just leave, I like Izzie but KH has become v annoying.

I agree with GreysGal.
This is so stupid. The reason TR left is because he didn't get enough screen time, and now they want to add even more people! WTF?!
Maybe this is the season everything's changing because there are gonna be different characters! I really don't want that to happen!

Almost half the original cast is gone, more than half of the Fab 5 gone or MIA.....
I really really hope that Grey's will be able to pull this off. Because I find it hard to watch Grey's with 3/5 of it's original interns missing....It's just...not the same

No TR left because they treated him like dirt and wouldn't give him anything to do.
As long as it is done realistically and without unnecessary couple angst, I have no problem with a few Meredith and Izzie-less episodes. In fact, this presents a wonderful opportunity to explore some of those characters that we still don't know that much about after 5 years (Derek, Alex, Mark). I would love to see Mark and Derek FINALLY get to their issues. More scenes between Alex and Cristina, Bailey and Derek, Callie and Cristina, Owen and Alex, etc.
If they do use this time to focus on relationships outside of the normal couples and give us some backstory on characters that need it (what is Alex's relationship w/his mother like now?, Are Mark's parents still alive?), I will be THRILLED. But I fear that once again, Alex and Derek will be the supporting player to someone else's story and this time it will be some new person that I couldn't begin to care about.

thank you george isobel and who ever else agrees with them they are trying to accomodate everyone and doing their best if they don't accomodate the actors life they will all leave and then don't bother about EXTRA residents they will be the MAIN CHARACTERS of the show they are actually trying the best the reason T.R Knight left is because he didn't feel his life outside his job was being accomodated and if i was a pregnant women i would leave if they didn't give me the necessary maternity leave and i would not be so keen to film two episode at a time
Shonda Rhimes has posted this on Twitter 'STOP OBSESSING ABOUT WHAT YOU READ. IT HASN'T EVEN AIRED YET' Its hard not to obsess when she is so tight lipped about this stuff. grr

CRAP. CRAP. CRAP!
I'm not gonna watch this.
i am a huuuge fan and i loved seasons 1-3, 4 and 5 were a little weak, but still, at least they focused on my favourite people: meredith, izzie, cristina, george and alex.
Now, George is gone, Izzie will leave for a while, meredith will fade into the background (wtf, she's the damn MAIN character!!!! the show's called after her!!!!)
what the hell are they doing to my fave show??????

I stopped watching ER when my fav character left. I'll stop watching GA when Ellen leaves /or they break up MerDer for good.
I liked MAGIC/ fab 5, and now that's gone. I was wondering how Iz would continue as a resident having had so much major surgery. I can imagine her recuoperating with her mom.
I had kinda thought Der having a break down was a story for PD, but that sorta got the ring involved, so I guess PD wants an Emmy.
