Alaric Saltzman Speaks: Matt Davis on Vampire Diaries Role

at . Comments

Is he a vampire? A vampire slayer? A human sporting the ring of his late, blood-sucking wife?

The jury is still out on Alaric Saltzman, who debuted this week on The Vampire Diaries.

While fans debate this character in our forum, TV Guide caught up with Matt Davis and probed him for hints, scoops and spoilers. Here's what the actor offered...

Is Alaric a good guy or bad guy? It's not so clearly defined. He has a dark side, and I think he's not always going to do the right thing. How that compels him remains to be seen.

Alaric Saltzman Debut

How will Alaric impact Jeremy? I think that Alaric sees him as the troubled teen that he is. Because of Alaric's own history and background, he reaches out and gives Jeremy the opportunity to redeem himself. Alaric clears the decks, in an academic sense, and provides a stable, understanding presence in his life. Jeremy begins to respect Alaric.

How long will he stick around? Right now, I don't really know. The joke on the set is that getting called down to the effects department to be fitted for a body mold is the kiss of death. They have to fit you for prosthetics so you can be staked in the heart or something.

Davis added that Saltzman doesn't know Stefan and Damon are vampires, which removes the possibility he arrived in Mystic Falls to take them down. Why is he here in that case?

I think he's a vampire slayer that is tracking the vampire that turned logan. His name even sounds like he would come from a long line of slayers. When he killed Logan, he seemed a little, I don't think he would have killed him in that way if he was the vampire that turned him.

I think I agree with Mtulip24.. I have a feeling he is a werewolf, either to give it the attention of another twilight break through or just to add in a bit of fun. Though, it would seem a little weird that if he is a werewolf how he hasn't sensed the vampires yet. Should be interesting to watch. I know that anything supernatural is not allowed entry into a persons home witout permission/invitation. So really he could be a lot of things. The ring could stop him from easily being turned, or something else, maybe a day walker who is not able to walk in sunlight without the ring??? hahah! Should be good.

I haven't read the books, but I was thinking vampire slayer when I first saw him and that he comes from a line of vampire slayers or something. I know I saw a rumor just recently of this too and I'm thinking the dead wife thing could be she was killed by a vampire and he's tracking.

i think he may be a werewolf.. the name Alaric Saltzman kinda sounds like a werewolf name... who knows? we will probably find out next episode.

Yeah, he wears a lapis lazuli ring, waits to be invited ... while I was watching the episode, I was like, "No, no, no, nooo ... you're not doing this, no!!! Why? Why don't you stick to the books, why turn Alaric into a vampire?" Oh, and his name, Alaric Saltzman ... please, he's got to be a 100+ ... pay attention to the comment about his name, his "very dead" grandfather was called this, too ... hm!?

He's a vamp...when viewing the episode, pay attention to when he brings home Jeremy's aunt...he pauses at the doorway and looks at it, waiting for her to invite him either he's just normal and wanting to come in or he's a vamp and waiting to be invited in since he cannot enter otherwise, plus he wears a day ring (I think)...regardless, it's a good add to the cast! Now please just get Stephen and Elena together already and NOT follow the books' storyline of destroying their relationship...

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
