I think he's a vampire slayer that is tracking the vampire that turned logan. His name even sounds like he would come from a long line of slayers. When he killed Logan, he seemed a little uneasy...plus, I don't think he would have killed him in that way if he was the vampire that turned him.

I think I agree with Mtulip24.. I have a feeling he is a werewolf, either to give it the attention of another twilight break through or just to add in a bit of fun. Though, it would seem a little weird that if he is a werewolf how he hasn't sensed the vampires yet. Should be interesting to watch. I know that anything supernatural is not allowed entry into a persons home witout permission/invitation. So really he could be a lot of things. The ring could stop him from easily being turned, or something else, maybe a day walker who is not able to walk in sunlight without the ring???
hahah! Should be good.

I haven't read the books, but I was thinking vampire slayer when I first saw him and that he comes from a line of vampire slayers or something. I know I saw a rumor just recently of this too and I'm thinking the dead wife thing could be she was killed by a vampire and he's tracking.

Yeah, he wears a lapis lazuli ring, waits to be invited ... while I was watching the episode, I was like, "No, no, no, nooo ... you're not doing this, no!!! Why? Why don't you stick to the books, why turn Alaric into a vampire?" Oh, and his name, Alaric Saltzman ... please, he's got to be a 100+ ... pay attention to the comment about his name, his "very dead" grandfather was called this, too ... hm!?

He's a vamp...when viewing the episode, pay attention to when he brings home Jeremy's aunt...he pauses at the doorway and looks at it, waiting for her to invite him in...so either he's just normal and wanting to come in or he's a vamp and waiting to be invited in since he cannot enter otherwise, plus he wears a day ring (I think)...regardless, it's a good add to the cast! Now please just get Stephen and Elena together already and NOT follow the books' storyline of destroying their relationship...
