I think the reality of the matter is KH is going to leave sooner or later. It may not be this season, maybe not even next season, but she's not gonna stay on the show forever, that much she has made clear. So I think it's very smart of the writers to develop new characters that could possibly fill the void for when that time comes.
I think from what we've seen from the episodes when she wasn't around, we all know GA will be just fine.
Personally, I also think once her 7 season contract runs out, she won't be renewing. But I think they won't let her off her contract so she'll be around until her contract expires.

I agree that we shouldn't judge why KH or anyone else on the show decides to take maternity leave or not. I don't want to compare her with EP, PD or CW. Truth is adoption is different. I've adopted 4 kids and you don't get 9 months to plan, if foreign or foster care system adoption. It's often sudden and challenging with a job. None of these other actors adopted so we can't compare. PD may have a stay-at-home wife and not need maternity leave. EP took a maternity leave like KH. Most women want to take maternity leave if they can. Let's not chide KH for her decisions with her adopted child. She might find it difficult working since adoption took place and asked for time off. Good for her.

heigl's new absency wasn't planned. She said that her adopted child arrival was planned for next year, only it was going faster for some reason. Therefor, The writers proberbly had to re-write her stroryline :(
personally, when I read that KH would be abcent for ANOTHER string of episodes, I almost went into Cardiac arrest.
I kid, I kid!
But SERIOUSLY! I liked the last episodes, but I only tolerated them 'cause I knew Izzie would be back full-time! Pfff,,,,only the idea of that is depressing. Like everything has changed, but for real. No george. It's all about Lexie, Calzone(LOVE IT), Mercy westers, BORING Owen etc....Where's Bailey?? All she gets to do now is yell once in a while! I like all the characters, but only when they're not around much! Keep the focus on MER/DER/YANG/IZZIE/BAILEY/CHIEF/DEREK!!

Anuflus perfectly said. I"m with ya 1000%. People get so pissed when I say I can't stand Izzy. But it is the truth. If she don't apprecite Shonda Rhimes and the show enough to go in and do her job she should be gone. She is one of the stars in the show. Not "THE STAR" of the show. What just kills me is when you think she is going to be gone. She pops right back in and takes half of the screen time that the other actors deserve. Over this year she has been the focus of many episodes and it pisses me off. Cause I"m not a fan of Heigl. The last 2 episodes without her and George in them where fantastic. It is only fair that the other actors get there time to shine and show what good actors they are. Derrick was so great week before last. The man can act his ass off. The closeness of the Dr's during that eppy was so good. Made me love them all the more for getting behind Derrick and trying to help him. And lets don't forget last week. Wow AZ was beyond words. I agree with u for the most part except for S7. Again we don't know what's in KH's head and by the time S7 begins her movie will pretty much be done (It's coming out Dec 2010 so a few months after s7) she's also producing the same movie so that could also keep her busy. Until KH says that she doesn't want to be on GA anymore I can't say anything about her contract or anything about Izzie's character.
I don't like it when people make judgements on actors when they do things or how the media portrays them (people sometimes believe what the media tells them which is why GA fans say they hate KH's attitude,she's a diva,etc.I'm thinking u don't know her so how can u tell what she's like unless u worked with her,related to her,or ur friends with her?) People make these assumptions because of how the media makes it seem. But yeah that's all I have to say and I apologize if I have offended anyone

I had the feeling that when JPJ said that the Chief was going to do some soul searching (the exact same words that PD used for Derek's drunk pity party) that he'd hit the bottle soon. I have to admit that it makes me excited to see the Chief hit rock bottom and come out of it. I think Derek will be his helping hand and that he's going to be Chief temporarily until Richard gets back on track.

Surprise surprise. I really think that she's on the path out of GA. Too many leaves.
I can't say that it's unreasonable or unfair that she takes this time. Obviously she has a legal right to it but I can't help to feel that other actors in the show that have become parents (EP, PD, and CW) are more committed to the show since they have not missed on any episode or have taken time off for anything, including parenthood and it doesn't mean they aren't good parents.
Also, maybe KH hasn't said the words: I don't want to be in GA anymore, but her actions say so.

i don't think that she'll die i the end of 7th season. nobody says she is leaving then, only her contract runs out, but so does ellen pompeos and everybody elses...

I think it's reasonable that KH is taking some time off. She adopted a 10-month-old on sudden notice. (I have adopted this way too several times so know how hectic it is). She did greys all last season, then made a movie during hiatus, then went right back into greys, then got the baby right as she went into making another movie. A bit of a break over the holidays for maternity leave seems resonable since she probably hasn't had any work time off this year. I think she'll be back because she's contracted through next season and the most prominent actor on the show. ABC will keep her and is developing other characters in mean time for when she leaves. I think she'll eventually die of cancer and be off the show at end of S7 to pursue movies. Sad for Alex storyline but I'm guessing that will happen.

I don't see why she needs more time off she already had time off to shot a movie and now she want more time off we need to find out happens between Her and Alex they also need to stop giving her all the time off she needs come on she needs to stay on greys its a show. that us Izzie Fans wanted her to stay on the show and now we have to watch the rest of the year with her gone its crap if we really want to see if her and Alex stay together then she need to be on the show and stop taking time off she has a job doing the show. she needs to stay on the show and stop taking time off And they need to stop making Alex so sad make him happy for once he needs to be happy and they need to get Izzie Act stright and stop making her a bitch and stop treating alex like crap

I am also scared that KH will leave this season but she's contracted till s7 so she techically can't leave.(and if she wanted out she would have asked in the beginning of the season to be let out) I like the reason for this break its actually wonderful in my opininon (spending time with her daughter ONLY who could say no to that????) I just hope its a shorter break and there's a GOOD reason for Izzie leaving this time (maybe finding her daughter or a self discovery thing something along those lines ) I just want A/I to make it
Just becaue EP was on set when she was pregnant it was her choice. Don't berate KH for not doing what EP did (Again I don't know any of these actresses so I can't place judgement on either of them) I will be extremely sad if KH leaves for good but i'll survive and still watch grey's(Izzie=one of my favorite characters)
People are different and have different priorities in life so don't insult them if family is the reason they want another break and don't as

Oh come on!!donnot blame KH for having the opportunity of developing a movie career. she has always said that she would love to make compatible both things.So thats what it is happening.Other actors in the series would do the same if they were offered movie related jobs. So as long as they can fit her absences in the plot, everything is OK for producers, actress and audience. dont bitch her just for taking advantage of her luck right now...Besides I remeber reading she had a contract till season 7, so this one wont be her last...
As for her absence to take care of her child, well I guess she is legally allowed to take some time off. Ellem toook hers for her biological child, so KH can do the same with her adoptive daughter.

I don't think KH wants to be on the show anymore!! She is taking leave of abstence again.. come on. Ellen was almost 9 months pregnant and still was there. God bless her!!
Not that I mind, because I don't like her or Izzie's character anymore.
And I don't think that Alex/Izzie are going to make it, more now if she is going away again!!
About the chief.. I think he will hit the alcohol again!! And there is only one person who could help him.. Derek!!

I think KH is leaving after this season, I mean all those hiatus, makes me think that she doesn't want to be there anymore. I too thought that she was spending more time with her daughter while filming the movie.
As for the Chief I knew he was going to hit the bottle soon. The guy is stressed out, he doesn't know how to handle himself.

I hope there will be a good explanation for Katherine's new leave of abscence. Maybe looking for her daughter and explaining everything to her. But I really hope it's gonna be a short break, 'cause we need Izzie! We already lost George and I really missed Izzie in the last episodes. Hope Alex and Izzie will start to sort this out somehow. Since I understand both sides. She's feeling betrayed, 'cause she thought that he understood that she wanted to work and that she needed her work (for distraction). And he doesn't know where she were and what she did and he was really worried about her.
But I think despite all the things that happened between them they still love each other and they are definitly still meant to be with each other!!!
As for the pregnant-thing... maybe her teacher is having Alzheimer's or he sort of can't remember the things that happened in the last 13 years and so he talks of Izzie being pregnant. Perhaps she was looking for her daughter's address to contact her????

Izzie is taking a break again this season??? I thought the first break was to spend time with her daughter while filming her movie. i guess she really can't handle being on set without her bff t.r knight. I bet you she's going to quit at the end of this season permanently, mark my words.
And no, i dont think she's pregnant, i think her old teacher who has dementia blurts out that she's pregnant because he's reliving the time when she was 16 and pregnant and meredith overhears and asks her if she's pregnant now. Just another promo teaser to get you to watch tonights episode....

Derek to the rescue, just as the Chief rescued him when he went awol. I hope this brings them to being friends again, I missed their friendship/mentorship.
Izzie, who cares if she is there or not I, for one, did not miss her last time. She was so quick to blame Alex, the Chief only mentioned his name before she had her hissy fit and stormed off. Alex has enough of his own emotional baggage without taking on hers as well, even though he loves her

Is the Hollidaze episode next week? It's episode 10 and that's when GA generally stops pre the new year, and there's generally a cliff hanger which I assume will be the chief hitting the bottle again.
Send him to an AA meeting quick. He's alienated his one friend at SGMWH, that's Der. Perhaps Der will sacrifice his career again to help his friend?

at like when Arizona guarded the door for Derek he got angry
he needs to calm down otherwise the hospital will go down hill and quickly :/
