Venture Brothers Review: "Self-Medication"

by at . Comments

This week's episode of The Venture Bros. was the closest thing we could ever describe as a star-studded aventure for this amazing show on Adult Swim.

The episode, "Self-Medication," featured Seth Green, John Hodgman, and Patton Oswalt as a group of fellow boy adventurers attending a self-help group with Dr. Venture to get over their childhood trauma.  These voice actors all did an amazing job leading to a very succesful storyline.

The Boy Adventurers

Unfortunately, the B Story belong to Sgt. Hatred and it focused on his pedophilia as usual.  We thought the Henchmen, Hank and Dean were all amazing in this story.  But really, do we need half an episode devoted to pedophile jokes and Hank dressed as Princesss Tinyfeet?  So not cool.

We absolutely loved the main storyline and character development of this episode and it could have been one of our favorites of the season if not brought down by Hatred.

Now presenting some of our favorite Venture Brothers quotes from the boy adventurers and the return of the great Dr. Z:

Dr. Venture: Well, Daphne, I believe. She got around quite a bit. But Velma? I always thought she was a...
Action Johnny: Everybody did. But I got a pack of herpes that says otherwise. | permalink
Action Johnny: You're gonna tell me you didn't send your flunky to murder our therapist with a Vietnamese Two-Step Viper?
Dr. Z: Bah! When Dr. Z harasses you, you'll know it. A giant metal crab would tear the roof off of your trailer. No less than six suicide assassins would spring from its belly! I would never stoop to striking at you through some civilian proxy. And I certainly would not do it with a made-up snake! | permalink
Action Johnny: Looks like you got a little herpe on your lip, have you been kissing your wife's ass... after I put herpe in there? | permalink
Action Johnny: My dad's lab was like a pharmacological candy store, so I started real young. Next thing I know, I'm blowing lines of voodoo powder off the back of a monkey's paw I bought in Calcutta. Now I'm all out of wishes. | permalink

Maybe the writers got bored with the storyline, but I wasn't. I miss Brock and the clones. I hate that other dopey adolescent (I hate him so much I don't know his name), and Hatred is NOT funny at all. This is a classic example of writers trying to "update" and "do something fresh" when they should have left well enough alone. The old saying "Don't mess with success" may be a cliche, but most cliches are true. (That's why people constantly repeat them.) Too bad, but I predict that this series is on the fast way out. I'm certainly not watching anymore, and apparently I'm not the only one. And on a broader note: Adultswim's decision to present more and more cheap and extremely lame live action shows by what appear to be fat middle-aged men instead of more brilliant animation is sickening. But as the budget goes down, so does the quality. (Cheesy live action is a lot cheaper than good animation.)

criticizing the series for losing one of its most prevalent members is hardly shallow, warburton was one of the most entertaining things about the show, and had the best dialogue bar none
inmypants you should probably go watch tom goes to the mayor, or some of the other high comedy on adult swim

yeah, bigserge this is season 4... you moron, and you wouldn't understand half the jokes because you have the mentality of a 10 year old. so sick of these "venture bro fans" complaining about how season 4 "sucks" because they only look at the slap-stick comedy and don't listen or understand to what's going on.

Not thrilled with hatred, the primary thread was good though. I have a certain amount of faith. And a whole lot of hope they tone down the pedophilia. Blech.

Sorry to say, but this is the episode where I quit half-way through and am now on the fence as to whether or not I'll watch any more. Season 3 has been a major disappointment. Abandoning Brock for Hatred was a huge mistake. The boys worked better in seasons 1 and 2 as perpetual doe-eyed nerds. It's always tough to admit that a once-loved series has lost its edge, but I'm afraid I've arrived at that point. Plus, the Hatred/pedophelia crap is just plain tasteless.

Venture Brothers Season 4 Episode 6 Quotes

My dad's lab was like a pharmacological candy store, so I started real young. Next thing I know, I'm blowing lines of voodoo powder off the back of a monkey's paw I bought in Calcutta. Now I'm all out of wishes.

Action Johnny

Wonderboy: Beep boop.
Lance Hale: What was that?
Wonderboy: I just turned off the radio in my utility belt like he said to.
Action Johnny: You said "beep boop" with your mouth.
Wonderboy: No I didn't. Leave me alone.
