Private Practice Review: "Til Death Do Us Part"

at . Comments

Last night on Private Practice, both Sam and Naomi struggled with their mixed emotions as Maya prepared to wed Dink. Addison battled some internal conflict of her own.

Jealous Cooper suspected Charlotte's new beau was abusing his meds, which took a surprising turn at the end of the night. Here's our review of "'Til Death Do Us Part" ...

Addison wants to talk to Sam about how she is seeing someone (he doesn't know about the Pete-Addison romance), but a baby about to be born prematurely interrupts.

Pete calls an ambulance, Naomi and Addison. This week's impossible Private Practice decision (they have more per season than any show in history) is particularly tough.

The baby is 25 weeks old, everything is going wrong, and a full battery of surgeries, ventilators, and incubators will be needed ... just to give him the slimmest of odds.

Addison suggests tactfully that they don't allow it to suffer. The parents, Pete and Naomi are want to fight. Addison decides to do as they advise and operate anyway.

Sam ultimately played the role of dad - not just of a guy in a suit.

Sadly, it doesn't go well and in the end, the parents come to realize she's right, a miracle simply isn't in the cards. They cry as they hold their baby for the first - and last - time.

It's moving and depressing, but at least it's realistic and well-acted.

Cooper is out to get Charlotte's new boyfriend. Not out of jealousy, he says (yeah, right), but for his Oxycontin scamming ways. He passive-aggressively rats him out (this is Coop).

When she rebuffs him (who saw that coming), he confronts the guy himself. Cooper at least convinces him to talk to Violet, where he gets snippy and reveals he has real problems.

Charlotte is still unmoved by her ex's meddling, until he messes up at work and her ass-kicking side rears its ugly head. Dude better be checking into rehab or he's gonna be fired.

At Maya's wedding (more on that shortly), Coop shows up with someone else, much to Charlotte's chagrin. But they quickly change that and "consummate" something themselves!

Wow, just like that. Are you excited for Cooper & Charlotte Round II?

Follow the jump for our take on the big story of the night ...

At the beginning of the episode, Dell is offering up marriage advice and consolations to Maya. He's probably the only one doing so, given the unusual circumstances surrounding it.

Her pissed mom won't come to her shotgun wedding, and her dad, while a little more supportive (he at least legally signed off) is clearly less than psyched about the whole ordeal.

Luckily Dink's mom is there to pick up the slack and is trying to put a positive spin on the wedding at every turn. Admirable as that is, what Maya really wants is her own mother.

But instead of being touched by Maya's gesture, Naomi decides nothing makes up letting her daughter down and ruining her life (her words)... than abandoning her again now.

Makes a lot of sense, right?

After Dell tells Sam to get his head in the game and act like he's actually happy for Maya, rather than merely showing up, Sam gives his ex-wife a lecture she was overdue for.

The gist: Don't miss your daughter's wedding. Otherwise, you'll be missing your daughter ... for good. No matter how difficult things are for her, Naomi comes around at the end.

The wedding is a dream come true ... or at least as close to it as a pregnant 16-year-old's wedding can be. Sam killed with his big toast about being Maya's "anyway" friend.

Because no matter what happens, he loves her anyway. Talk about an appropriate story to tell at this event. Almost makes you forget that there was any animosity in the family.

The only animosity there was? Sam telling Addison he doesn't want to see her. Period. Pete is his friend, he says, and he's clearly stung by her dalliances with him. Ouch.

Okay, I am sorry but putting a baby through unnecessary surgeries is absolutely cruel. They weren't choosing death. The mom did what she could for the baby and everyone always says that letting go is how you truly show someone that you love them.

PETE AND ADDISON! NO! But Sam was a real jerk to her. I want Pete and Violet! =( Also, Charlotte and Cooper need to get back together! Round two please! I think the arguing is great. Okay, this is dirty but, arguing + more arguing = great make-up sex. xD I think Cooper just snapped and couldn't take it anymore by not being with Charlotte. Then he stormed into the bathroom and they had a round! =D At least one of the couples I love are hopefully getting back together. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!:
Pete + Violet
Sam + Addison
Cooper + Charlotte

Stop saying that Addison is a whore. Sex is her way of feeling better and that's how she deals with problems. Leave the fact that Pete doesn't have feelings for Addison, because neither does she. Maybe she's not the happiest person in the world, but enjoying time with some people is better than crying at home. She is what she is! And she's definitely not a whore. Sam and Addison - when I saw first signs of something between them, I thought that there's no chemistry, there're no love-like feelings, there's nothing. And I was thinking of them as a brother and sister. But then I found myself thinking that maybe this is it. I know they won't work as a couple, but I really would like to see them trying. But after Sam told Addison he doesn't want to see her, I think this is the end. And now I'm afraid that they won't be such good friends as they were. Pete and Addison - good for her! I was waiting for them during the season one, now it's not as exciting, but I'm happy that happened. If that's what they want at the time, why not? And it's kinda painful that Shonda said "Addie in a stable relationship = end of show".

Naomi is annoying these days. Cooper and Charlotte together again really doesn't make me happy, makes me more sick. I was so sick of their drama and here we go again with the next round. I thought Cooper was more immature actually than her though in the arguments because he kept saying he forgave her and then kept throwing it up in her face and wouldn't even try to move on. If he couldn't move on, then he should've just walked away and now they throw them back together again - yuck! Violet needs to get over it already. She's a therapist and she needs to realize she needs a therapist herself. Dell has been through more of it than anyone and he's the only normal one it seems in the group!! I don't like Addison and Sam at all. I think they were so much better as just friends. I think Addison made the right choice by not starting anything with him. Naomi is her best friend and you don't sleep with your best friend's ex-husband. How many men are there in the area? Do they honestly have to keep recycling ones? I have loved Pete and Addison since the first crossover with Grey's. I had hoped they would bring them full circle and get them together, but I don't like how they've done with both of them admitting they are or may be in love with other people. I was hoping they would just get rid of their baggage and fall in love themselves. I'm still holding out hope that they will and then maybe Sam and Violet can finally move on.

"And although it's just a television show, it just reflects the sad reality of the "culture of death" that's so prevalent in our world. Does anyone else feel the same way? " No. I found the way that the parents were trying to keep the baby alive deplorable. To cause such suffering to a tiny life which was going to end anyway is criminal, just as bad as the worst case of child abuse. Just because the parents were not beating the child did not mean that the child was not in inescapable, terminal pain which was going to end in death regardless of what happened. In nature the baby would have died immediately--keeping it alive artificially was only prolonging the natural process of a merciful death. I thought that the way the physicians on Private Practice handled this case was very good, though. They acted as ethically as they could under the circumstances.

They need to not have Sam and Addison together. Now forgive me for sounding racist but I don't know what's trying to be proven here: is it because Tay Diggs is married to a white woman?? I cringe when he and Addison kissed. I will stop watching if they put these two together. They are being shoved down are throats! They have no chemistry. Bring on a nice affrican ericam character for him, although I like him with Naomi. They need to stop with the whole interracial crap: Maya and Dink, Naomi and her Drs., and the premie couple! I think Violet is going to get it together and then try to get custody; Pete will always be a playboy..and Coop and Charlotte will be stable. That's my opinion. Again, no offense.

I think putting an end to Sam and Addison was the smartest decision Shonda's ever done. I mean - SERIOUSLY! Cooper and Charlotte need to get together and stay together!

To Lindsey and Bekki, and all the other Violet/Pete fans, hell yes to Violet and Pete! Bring them back together already! And I agree, her saying the wedding quote has got to hint at something. I hope!

I totally agree with Lindsey!!! I adore Voilet and Pete - they give me something to look forward 2. But know that the whole pete/addison thing has been brought back in, it puts a downer on it!!! I think they both deserve happiness, i just don't think it's with each other. and i like the fact that charlotte and coop hit it off again. i used to hate them, but now i like them about the same as voilet and pete! btw - when is the baby going to come back in? i think that'll be the final piece of the puzzle for vi! then her and pete can be together and happy again! she definatly deserves it! and him - i deffo think (after her telling him it was "her wedding") that something is going to happen - and that another wedding is coming sooon!!! soooo psyched!!!! :D:D:D:D

Addison and Pete? That story is dead to me. I think them hooking up is pointless. I like her with Sam. Pete should be with Violet! I love Pete and Violet! Pete doesn't care about Addison, he's too in love with Violet, thankfully! When are all of us Pete and Violet fans going to get a pay off??
