Katherine Heigl Out at Grey's Anatomy, Will Not Appear on Series Again

at . Comments

After six seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl is finally nearing a discharge.

EW says series creator Shonda Rhimes has agreed to release the fast-rising movie star from her contract and it's up to ABC Studios and Heigl’s reps to hash out an exit agreement.

Why is all of this coming down right now? That’s where things get interesting.

After taking more than half of the current season off to make another movie and connect with her adopted daughter, Heigl was scheduled to return to the Grey’s Anatomy set on March 1 to begin work on the five remaining episodes of the season.

Just one problem: March 1 came and went and there was no Heigl.

Stevens Returns

A source within the actress’ camp claims that Katherine “was at home and ready to return to work.” Another insider, however, “insists that it’s much more complicated than that.”

So she just didn't go in? This whole thing is bizarre.

The source adds that talks between Heigl and ABC have been going on for months and last week both sides mutually decided that the best solution would be to part ways now.

As a result, Heigl is not expected to return to the Grey’s Anatomy set this season after all, which means her final episode as original character Dr. Izzie Stevens already aired.

The soon-to-be-finalized break-up caps a long history between Heigl and Grey’s Anatomy that can be described as contentions. Some of the more high-profile squabbles:
  • In 2007, Heigl found herself in the middle of the T.R. Knight / Isaiah Washington feud when she publicly dissed Isaiah for repeating the F-word at the Golden Globes.
  • In 2008, Heigl took a swipe at Grey’s Anatomy writers when she announced that she wasn’t entering the Emmy race because “did not feel I was given the material."
  • In 2009, she whined to David Letterman that Grey’s Anatomy was subjecting her to intolerable working conditions. “A 17-hour day, which I think is cruel and mean.”
  • Multiple times over the course of those years, Heigl's disagreements over her contract situation became public, with speculation that Season Five would be her last.

The bottom line is that we don't suspect that there will be any love lost on either side as this whole sordid chapter comes to an end. But how do you feel about it as fans?

Happy this ordeal is finally over? Couldn't care less? Sad that she's leaving, or at least sad that she's not getting a formal send-off and just vanishing?

Katherine Heigl killed Izzie Stevens. The blame falls at her feet...lets see just how far her attitude gets her in the movies.

We saw it coming, please...KH wanted out of GA, and now she has what she wanted. For Alex...he deserves better, yes. He doesn´t deserve to be left after have been through all the illness with her. He cheated because Izzie left him, hurt him so badly that he wouldn´t forgive her for that. It´s not Alex´s fault that Izzie left. He is just a human being, and makes mistakes.
And for KH, she could have been more comprehensive and a good cast member. Farewell, KH, and wish you a good movie career, though I don´t think you are a good actress (critics are against her too).
I will buy the 6 season as soon as it is released in Spain (I don´t know when it´s going to be on tv). I bought season 5 without having seen it, and loved it.
Well, Owen is a good reason to keep on watching GA, don´t you think?

I can imagine how hard this announcement has been for KH and Izzie fans. I was convinced last season we would only see MAC finish their residencies, but I think GA is the poorer for not having MAGIC present. I'm kinda surprised this announcement was made so early. We all know that Iz is gonna disappear at the end of S6, so where's the cliffhanger for the end of this season? I guess Alex could be devastated again. GA is loosing it's direction and my interest. I'm beginning to hope that S7 has the final 2 years of MAC's residency squeezed in. The calibre of the storyline is falling and no amount of new characters will save it

I think if they are letting her go/or she's quitting they should atleast put I/A back together and let her character die from the cancer that was suppose to kill her. Atleast then there would be closure for her character and it would bring in some depth for Alex. The story line they came up with is stupid if this is the end for them. I really can't see myself watching anymore. As it is I find myself fastforwarding most of the episode that I tivo cause I'm just not interested in sitting thru all the junk.
just read greysfan's post so i totally agree with the alex remark.

@David I kinda agree the show is going downhill. It's just sad, really. Bleh. If it doesn't get better within the next few episodes, I say just cancel the show already and put us all out of our misery. I'd rather have 5-6 seasons of good or at least decent material that I can remember fondly, than another 5 seasons of lousy material that I wish was never even filmed.

oh and one more thing... if they knew this was gonna happen last season than WHY WHY have Izzie and Alex get married and yet having it end like that!!! it's crap... I think i would have accepted this more if Iz and Al didn't get married and she just died. that would have been easier than this. :*( ugh

:( that's all i have to say besides Seriously, Seriously. SERIOUSLY?

I really don't know if i believe this at all because i did some research and all the other internet post keep saying they got their information from the same source but not from ABC, Katherine Heigl, or Shondra Grimes. So until I hear this from one of those people then i am forced to not believe this. Plus why would Shondra Grimes tell a reporter about how she wrote a great episode for Izzie and then we find out that Katherine Heigl would quit. I don't believe it until someone from ABC, Shondra Grimes, or Katherine Heigl confirms that this is true.

Really, really sad she's leaving... Izzie and George have always been my favorite characters. I was really disappointed when George died, but I can't believe Izzie will be leaving the show as well. She was funny and human and made me smile in every episode. I don't like where the show is headed and I think the sixth season is the worst yet. I kept watching it in the hope that Izzie would be back, but now I guess there's no point to keep on watching since all the best characters are gone. They should have killed Izzie in the fifth season when she had cancer instead of letting her go like this. What was the point of saving her and then get rid of her? She has had great moments in season five with the wedding and all, some of the best episodes ever. And now she's gone for good? Truly dissapointing...

Shonda is shutting her mouth about, obviously, she wants more people to watch this horrible excuse of "medical" drama, or should I say "highschool-pretend-you're-a-doctor-and lets-make-out-drama". And of course who is she going to use? It would be the only person who won an Emmy from her show, and of course the "ungrateful-beyotch-who-just-can't-keep-her-mouth-closed". It's always a ploy to put some controvery on the show esp with the series' decling ratings. She's using KH , but of course, she's the only one now that's doing movies and is successful. All those haters out there, it's kinda true. yes! Now, KH definetly needs to go too, I mean, it's about time, the show never appreciated her, give her the most over the top storyline, but no matter how stupid it is, we kept on rooting ofr her still because she is defintely a talented actress. Now can we also kill that stupid character of Lexie who's before the stupid"I-want-my-sister-to-love-me intern" to "I-strip-in-front-of-a-oversexed-doctor", to "I'll-change-my-hair-color-bad-ass-ness", God, just a stupid character, ! GA, you used to be better than this, now I'll go watch seasons1 and 2 and think that the day after the PROM, a nuclear bomb was planted at the hospital and the hospital went ka-boom and all were dead.! SO BETTER! I'm gonna watch reruns of ER now............Shonda-epic-failure all over !

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
