Shonda Rhimes Confirms Katherine Heigl Return to Grey's Anatomy

at . Comments

At the 41st Annual NAACP Awards on Friday night, Shonda Rhimes talked a little about Grey's Anatomy, including what’s in store for Katherine Heigl’s character.

Well, sort of. At least we know that her character will be involved in ... something. “She’s written into the next script,” Shonda revealed to reporters at the event.

Heigl's stint on the drama has been marked by controversy the past two seasons and by two prolonged absences in the current Season Six. But she'll be back.

While we know that Izzie Stevens, who suffered from an almost lethal bout with cancer, is definitely returning, the fate of the Chief of Surgery is another story.

What does the future hold for Richard and Izzie?

“Well, I love James Pickens and I think that we’re going to get to see a lot more of him and what happens to his character and explore what happens to a doctor when they go to rehab and eventually come out the other side,” Shonda explains of his character, Richard Webber.

But any show needs a bit of new blood, and some change to keep running on all cylinders. Shonda Rhimes agrees that Jesse Williams is perfect to fill that role.

“We developed his character a little more and illuminate who he is a little more to give more time to him… I think it was nice to bring in people that the audience would hate and our characters would have to rise against,” she revealed after the awards ceremony in L.A.

Guess he's not one of the two Mercy Westers who'll be fired.

KH is not the first and won't be the last who'll sign up to a tv series and then find her/his movie career gets more lucrative, and s/he will want to leave. I looked at a list of all KH projected movie projects at various stages of development. She has loads of work in hand, whether or not she has to stay in GA. It's the producers call whether they keep her on to honour her seven season contract. The show keeps having to evolve, it feels so different to S1 now. I don't like the overloading of new characters. I think Avery has been groomed to become a season regular very soon. Shonda writing in his grandfather as Harper Avery is no fluke, she wants us to like him.

THANK YOU spaced out and mariah!I know there's always going to be a debate between KH and Izzie's character but she's back and none of us can do anything about it. It's all up to Shonda Rhimes and KH to what's gonna happen. Here is one request to the show though:Give Izzie a good SL but don't give her a major SL she hasn't been on the show for half the season and the writers shouldn't try to make a big SL towards the end of the season it's just too much.

I hope KH is not back for good. She doesn't want to be on Grey's, I say let her go and do movies. The show has not lost a thing without her. She'll come back and throw a tantrum and want a hugh arc of a storyline all about her. I don't watch Grey's because of her. I watch Grey's because of Patrick Dempsey (Derek). Give him more airtime. I also feel sorry for Ellen Pompeo. Izzy gets more storyline than she does and this is suppose to be Grey's Anatomy. I know that she had a light storyline earlier because of her pregnancy but even before that KH had more of the weekly plot. Let KH go, she doesm't want to be there. Also BTW, the idiotic time warp story lines was not a very good episode. The new characters for Ellis and Richard were totally miscast. I still watch Grey's and just when I think it is getting back in the groove, there's a disappointing episode.

to spaced.out i agree... I mean, what KH did was kinda uncool for some but I bet a few of them had done what she had done. People always complain. If there unhappy, they complain and KH can do that, definetly, but it kinda came out rude (of course, this is a star were talking about here..). A lot of haters out there doens't like KH, but honestly, (try searchinh it online), she's the biggest star GA has, admit it or not, she's the one that is busy (with movies and what-nots). so GA kinda needs that. Shonda knows they need KH. On a another note, KH return, or should I say i'm sad of Izzie's return because the writers, seem to not know what they're doind with her, they make her a whinning brat, then a troubled, emotional doctor, the cancer-sex, uh! If they want KH to be back, give her a storyline that she deserves. One thing I noticed with the show. I think they love the character of Lexie, her storyline kinda revolves on the fact that she always comes on top. Common!!?!?!?! I kinda like here but she's too much. Bring back Merideth, they-can't-even come up with a storyline for her!?!!?!?!? I don't like Owen much and the chief, god! If I know he'll be back as chief again, seriously!!?!?! Give the characters a boost, and if you're planning of extending GA to more seasons with adding new characters, ha! epic fail, and this is not just my opinion, the ratings are going down.... I'm sad.

seriously,??? to those hater out there, (we really don't care) but I personally care that you spell out your comments correctly. puh-lease. Seriously, "the-show-is-so-much-better-without KH?", how is that? Rating-wise and currently where the show's direction is going, (I'd rather think about that?). There doing flashbacks again? I agree with those other comments that it's like the crossovers: it's boring, boring, boring, boring. One other thing, they keep introducing new character that it right now it seems to be too much. Personally, the show is kinda goin downhill. At some point I still keep watching some of the episodes because the emotion is still there but it's never the same.
PS: with regards to the "KH-bitcheness", how is that bitcheness and ugrateful when almost all of us has the right, common, this is a free world, and who cares if she's a bitch, the major difference with those haters is just that fact that there on there couch, staring at the PC commenting on blogs while KH really never cares about them.. Sorry for the rant! peace!

I have big concerns if we're keeping looking at flashbacks, cos they'll be about as 'special' as the unspecial cross overs have become...boring and predictable. Of course the mash type episode will involve Ted and Hunt looking back. I'm dreading it! I have got used to Iz not being in GA. I hope her return doesn't get too Izzie centric everything else is lost plot wise. Iz will need her job back, to get a divorce, decide what's going to happen to those frozen embryos Alex shnoozed for her. Will she end up at the trailer by herself, perhaps the bear will attack and she'll be fighting for her life at the end of this season?? There needs to be some Iz type drama for a cliffhanging end to this season!

I'm disappointed to see Izzie coming back to Grey's. Katherine Heigl mouths off way too much. To me, her public whining is insulting to Grey's loyal viewers. Her absence this season has only reinforced my opinion that Izzie is not needed on Grey's. Katherine Heigl comes across as a snotty, unappreciative, spoiled little girl. She has no professionalism. Get lost Izzie! Go to the unemployment line and cry the blues there.

Shonda Rhimes also mention at the awards, that fans should expect more flashback episodes. That would be cool. Like Faye Dunaway's Character Dr Campbell worked with Ellis Grey. Maybe reveal more of Ellis' diary entries. Use some of the surgical tapes that Meredith has to start a flashback episode and discuss the procedure in the teaching auditorium. Maybe get Meredith or maybe Cristina organise for the tapes to be transferred onto DVD and suggest to Meredith that they should donate them to the hospital for future interns to watch.

yaiy, finally! izzy's back:)
Im so excited!
just hoping that things between her and alex will get better!!! love them!

Yayy Izzie's back!!!! (even if it is for the last 4-5 episodes of the season) I'm really glad to hear this news but I actually agree with anuflas with the point that it can't be about Izzie for the rest of the season.(But I did LOVE episode 100 and her VO) I want Izzie to have some type of SL but not to the extent of the last half of S5 there are too many characters as it is and she's been gone half of S6 so let other characters have their time. If KH leaves @ the end of S7 I'm gonna be upset no doubt but I'm going to continue watching greys and put no negative feelings towards KH at all for whatever decision she makes. I just hope she stays longer *fingers crossed*

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
