Gossip Girl Season Finale Review: The End of the Beginning

at . Comments

OMG ... or would WTF be more accurate?

No one can take this away from Gossip Girl's third season finale: It delivered the shocking twists and that fans of the ongoing emotional roller coaster have come to expect.

But were you turned off by the cliffhangers and scandalous developments of "Last Tango, Then Paris," or that much more intrigued to see the saga continue in September?

The episode basically tore down everything about Gossip Girl that had been created up until now, a bold move that's sure to be polarizing among the show's fan community.

There are two reactions, basically:

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Chuck and Jenny?! WTF! Chuck shot!?! WTF again!! You killed Chuck (possibly in more ways than one)! OMG I am so DONE with this show!
  2. Wow. That was intense. Talk about cranking the drama up to a new level! I didn't see any of that coming, and can't wait for Season Four to find out what's next.

Which camp are you in?

Bluck Bickers

Chuck and Blair: The saga continues this summer.

Some aspects were a bit over the top, but the more we think about it, the more we find ourselves leaning toward category #2. No matter how painful last night was to watch.

Having Chuck and Blair thisclose to a fairy tale ending, only to be torn apart once again, was heartbreaking. That's the point. Sometimes you can't tie everything up perfectly.

There will be another chapter, too. Mark my words, "Last Tango, Then Paris" was not Chair's last tango. He was shot (trying to recover Blair's ring), but he will live. So breathe.

Chuck getting shot in Prague may feel cold, a cheap move by the writers. But perhaps only an event that serious can finally bring Chair together for good, even if it takes time.

Rather than being the end of Chair, and of Gossip Girl as we knew it, last night was merely the end of the beginning chapters - and maybe the next ones will be even better.

Not only does this plot set the stage for a dramatic reunion in Europe, it adds a new component to their relationship: Will Chuck facing his own mortality change him - or Blair?

A couple this epic is going to have to face obstacles, especially with the kind of baggage Chuck carries. Whether they overcome them is the question, and I'm inclined to say yes.

That said, we can't let Chuck, Jenny or the writers off the hook entirely.

The thought of him turning to Jenny at all, and her cashing in her V-card, was nauseating and seemed out of character, even for the mercurial Chuck Bass and Jenny Humphrey.

That Chuck would do that to Blair, or Jenny would do that after Season One, seemed unlikely. But maybe it was the only thing unthinkable enough to set future events in motion.

(While we're being critical, why would B not text Chuck to say she was running a couple of minutes late? Clearly she didn't miss him by much. What was it, 7:08? Just asking.)

Little JH

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, J.

You have to admit, though, it was compelling TV. Right along with Chuck, you wanted to forget about J as soon as B walked in, to begin anew as you intended from the start.

You hoped it would somehow never come to light, even if you knew it would, and painfully. It made the reveal, courtesy of a Dan Humphrey right hook, hurt that much more.

After this stunt, a spinoff entitled Everyone Hates Jenny Humphrey doesn't seem too far off, especially since she's been barred from Manhattan by Blair (awesome scene, BTW).

This happened after she tipped off Gossip Girl about Dan and Serena in bed together, too. That was some move. Perhaps it's good J takes her runny raccoon eyes and leaves.

If Blair doesn't take her down, someone else will at this point. It'll be interesting to see when - and why - the girl does return next fall and what sort of fireworks that sets off.

Speaking of other relationships Jenny ruined, Serena and Nate are done following the Gossip Girl blast, as (we think) are Dan and Vanessa! It was too much for N and V to take.

Pissed, Nate double-crossed Dan by forwarding the pic to Vanessa in Haiti. They made up later, which was great (they're guys, that's what they do), and they're both single now.

Dan and Serena aren't together, despite their obvious feelings for each other, and in all likelihood won't be. Serena's "working on herself" in Paris, after all ... that should be fun.

Even more ridiculous than the fact that she spent the episode dressed as an '80s prostitute is her ongoing list of reasons for breaking up with guys. How will she get it together?

Blair has an idea: Go to Paris. Since S is perennially unemployed and unenrolled in school, she decides to come along. What awaits them there - and back in New York after that?

Sparks in Disguise

Georgina Sparks: Perennial finale troublemaker ... and Dan's baby mama?!

Again, not a reunion with Dan. Something about the package Georgina brought him may make that tough. We knew something was up with G, but we did not see that coming.

Dan’s fathered her child? Why did she go to Blair and Chuck for help? Why did her hair change? Is it really Dan's? Nothing Georgina says carries any credibility, which is awesome.

The excuse for bringing everybody together last night was Dorota. Watching her become a mom was really sweet, even if all the characters showing up there was a big stretch.

It was far from perfect overall, but we give the show credit for rebooting itself if nothing else. This is Gossip Girl, right? Without shocking, OMG twists like these, why watch?

Okay, we wouldn't mind a happy ending too ... at some point.

We turn it over to you once again. What did you think of the Gossip Girl season finale? Did you love it? Hate it? Tell us why by voting and comment below!

Finale = EPIC FAIL

CHUCK VIVI TI PREGO !!! I agree with Chuck MrsBassdorf if Chuck died. i will pull out ... the series without him would no same !he can't die he is a character important no matter if died in a grand style ... Blair and Chuck are a couple fantastic that can't be destroy ... If Chuck ( nemmero I say it) will die Blair will enter into a depression and then she meets a beatiful boy and falls in love again . Chuck loves only Blair and Blair loves only Chuck... do not let it end here do not dies Chuck . however is said that he is together with Blair and Serena to paris for the first two episodes of season 4 .. Georgina is a myth and she is a villain worthy of the word "villain". i want kill jenny .. don't do it ever again see .she has ruined everything between chuck and Blair . if jenny had died . Chuck and Blair would organize a wedding! Chuck life , please

to the person below me...
if Chuck dies, so does GG
the show wont survive very long without Chuck Bass trust me :)

I hate Jenny!!! is all i have to say. It is all her fault. Everything! she is the dumbets stupid a$$ b i have ever seen in my life. The ONE persons life that she actually didn't ruin she had to do it. She was not forced to have sex with chuck he gave her a chance to leave &&&& the dumb slut knew he wanted blair black the last episode! she didn't need to tell anyone she could have kept it to herself. it only grosssed me out becuase she is so fucking UGLY! idk she doesn't deserve chuck to have been her first time. SHe is not a victim AT ALLLLLLLLLL!!! actions have consequences she need to deal with her stupis a$$ snap judgements..or lac k there of
Chuck: Looooooooooooooooooooooooooove him. he's not dead. He is the show. I don't need to mention there name becuase if I say chuck you automatically think of her. they are one. I had NO idea he cared so much. the look on his face the pain in his eyues and the sincerity of his words when he admited that he tought blair didn't love him anymore. HE was coming way thru his fear for her saying that.He admited being broken something no one would have thought chuck would ever do. whenhe kissed her (after jenny yuck) it was like he was coming alive and when he realized she came you could see his heart being put back together. He does need to truly apologize..buht oh wait thats what the rinig was for like whtn he said i wil make it up to you even if it takes the rest of my life! ti am NOT mad at him. have you ever gotten your heart broken? yea, you tend to want to do anything to mend it.Sleeping with girls is his thing to get over stuff yuu ccan't get mad for him being himself the chuck we all know and love materafact if jenny wasn't there..never could have happened!
Blair waldorf: Genius. blair will cry on cue but when she yelled "don't say her name!" that was...so out of her character..she was hurt. the smackdown Jenny richly (so)deserves was perfection..and when she found out about chuck..those parting words. blair.will.know. you can run but you can't hide trick!my desire is only for blair to KNOW chuck was asking her to marry him..that will b epic. her face when she finds that out. how she didn't see the ring? I don't know.
other characters: who cares this was chuck and blair's epi and we all know it. well dan ruined the proposal so he sucks nuts..tho he is the brother so he is entitled to b upset..ohhh and eeeewwww..i forgot there all family..but wait dan and serena kissed..anyway chuck and blair!

One more thing...Did the Music in this episode bother anyone else as much as it bothered me??? I mean my EARS were bleeding, at some of the inappriopriate music playing most of the time in this episode. WOW! even the music...which used to be A grade in Gossip Girl has become painfully horrible, i really don't know What else is left to go downhill in this show ( i can't think of one single thing ) :-(

Hey! Some Views of Mine about the FINALE. A little late i know...but i just couldn't find time, other priorities took precedence so bear with me. --The worst of the three finales so far...and IMO one of the worst TV finales of all time. WTF is going on here...it completely seems like a different TV show to the one i signed up for. Honestly this so called GAME CHANGER is a clever/articulate/fake way of the writers telling us that they have TOTALLY RUN OUT OF IDEAS and the only thing they could come up with was to just destroy everything...i mean everything which happened over the last three years to go back to SQUARE ONE so that they could repeat the same SHIZ all over again, What a bunch of TALENTLESS BOZOS * shakes head * --For once, nothing surprised me except the Georgina bomb ( mainly becuz...i thought this was too soapy and comical for this TV show, boy was i wrong but it did catch me off guard )...everything else went as i thought it would ( DAMN i must be a SADIST too...becuz i read that LYING *&%$ SS and the bozos below her to the bone ) and honestly Chenny didn't shock me as much as it made me feel SAD for Jenny, Chuck and Blair...what a clusterfuck )...it was DARK ( i like Dark stuff but for some reason this didn't sit well with me ) --What a poorly done episode this was even from a technical point of view...the EDITING was CRAP...i mean they went from one scene to the other so quickly that...it gave no room for us viewers to get the proper effect the scenes were intended to have. It should have been a 2hr FINALE...plain and simple, just too much stuff going on...and weirdly they ignored the important things and gave unnecessary screentime to inconsequential things like DOROTA having a baby...REALLY WHO CARES???. Look i used to love DOROTA but honestly they have over done DOROTA the last few episodes and in turn killing her character for me, she is cool when she pops up once in a while not when fillling imp. screentime with her STUPID JIBBER JABBER...boring, instead of imp. things like Giving more of what was happening in Chuck's head for eg: the ESB scene when Blair doesn't come...and his PAIN atm could have been golden to potray his LOVE for BLAIR and his EMPTY state when he decided to become a SISTER FUCKER but FAIL they just jumped from one scene where he is sniffing PEONIES to the next where he is taking comfort from kissing his AWFUL LOOKING step sister JENNY ( boy did she look bad in this episode ) WTF...how did these people get so far into the INDUSTRY. Just FUCKING FAIL in everyway rite until the final scene of Chuck getting SHOT...Which was way to over-dramatic with the weird SET and acting, JUST FUCKING FAIL. --Also one random thing bear with me...What the heck was the scene of Jenny changing the blood stained sheets? Who the fuck wanted that DETAIL in here ( this idiots miss all the imp. details and remember such a DETAIL *natefused* ) it was as if the writers wanted to make sure that some viewers don't cling onto false hope that Chuck didn't deflower Jenny...so they made sure we got the message CRYSTAL, but it was weird in a cringeworthy way for me * shakes head * --Anyway i want to end with a positive thing...i.e the acting. Taylor, Ed and Leighton KILLED IT. TAYLOR stole the show in the finale for me...say what you want about her, but this girl is TALENTED no doubt in my mind. I mean i felt soo bad for Jenny in this episode ( seriously i don't understand how some people hate her ) and i give Taylor a lot of credit for that. And then what new to add about Ed and Leighton ( we all know how good and consistent they are week after week ) ...i know that i was supposed to hate and question my LOVE for Chuck in this episode...but i felt for that GUY, i could feel each and every emotion flowing through that character, PROPS to ED i don't know how he extracts such stuff from such horrible writing...ED and LEIGHTON really make me respect the ART OF ACTING, this show basically runs on their talent and AMAZING CHEMISTRY...seriously there is nothing else in this show. Leighton was great as usual in every way...whether being a fierce bitch or as a MADLY IN LOVE girl...she was great but i must say the writing is on her side, BLAIR is the best written character on the show atm but still that doesn't take anything away from LEIGHTON. I still don't understand how this show and RETARDS like JS and SS landed such UNDISCOVERED TALENTS in ED,LEIGHTON AND TAYLOR. --All in all it is OFFICIAL this is a CRAPPY TEEN DRAMA/SOAP...and this show has officially JUMPED THE SHARK with THIS season and this FINALE.

I loved the chair scences although I cried every moment of them shut it was sooooo freaking heartbreaking the way things ended with them, but Im sure they will find their way back to one another because chair is meant to be ......chair forever.........

I think chuck not really dies.. he was only wounded in his arm. I hope at the beginning of season 4 chuck followed Blair to Paris and tried to get Blair back. I'm really want they're back as a couple at season 4..

chuck better not have dies or else i will cry

Gossip Girl Season 3 Episode 22 Quotes

First of all, S., you didn't go to school this year and you haven't had a real job in months, so life is kind of like summer for you.

Blair loves the Empire State Building. Even though she doesn't want to, and she should just admit it and make all our lives easier.
