The Vampire Diaries Review: Guess Who's Back...

at . Comments

So much for an epic showdown between John Gilbert and the Salvatores.

Heading into this week's season finale, viewers of The Vampire Diaries were led to believe the series had built to a battle for Mystic Falls, one side anchored by Elena's birth father, the other by two of her close, undead friends.

Instead, John's device-based scheme was completed halfway into "Founder's Day" and the attention then shifted to the fallout from it... a fallout whose ramifications will be discussed by fans all summer long. Wow. What a season finale!

Producers had promised us a bunch of cliffhangers and they delivered. Below, we analyze each, culminating in the most shocking event of them all.

Damon, Elena and Stefan

RIP, Caroline? First, let us bid farewell to Anna. May she finally find peace and happiness, reunited with her mom in vampire heaven. Will Caroline soon join her in the next life? My guess is no. While this character isn't key to any ongoing storyline, the show would have killed her off last night if that was its intention.

Welcome, werewolves The reason behind Tyler's accident wasn't to get rid of Caroline. It was to push Tyler's transformation further along. To that, we say: hallelujah! In our Vampire Diaries Round Tables, we've been clamoring for more on this individual's apparent affection for full moons. It was teased perfectly on the finale. Tyler won't just have to deal with what he is now.

He'll have to deal with the death of his father. Does anyone else smell the discovery of family secrets and the impending arrival of more werewolves? We know how much fun that has been on the vampire front all season long.

The new Bonnie: I love this evolution. This witch knows who she is now and she's not shy about her loyalties. Might Elena have to choose between her BFF and her BF next year at some point?

A turning point for Jeremy It started with the death of his parents; it was pushed along by the passing of Vicki and his sister's betrayal; and it ended with the murder of Anna. Sick of feeling such pain, Jeremy swallowed some blood, downed some pills and left viewers wondering: really?!?

Will the pseudo suicide attempt really work? Will Jeremy truly go to the dark side in order to alleviate his suffering? On most shows, I'd shoot down the notion that a main character would actually end his human life. But The Vampire Diaries has proven it's unafraid to shock. Sound off in our forum: Will we see vampire Jeremy next season?

Hmmm... am I forgetting any development from the finale? Oh yeah: KATHERINE RETURNED!!!!!

Double the Dobrev, quadruple the suspense The show got me. I thought the finale would conclude with Damon kissing Elena, followed by the latter screaming over Jeremy's unconscious body. The episode was solid up to that point, but it felt like a let down. Ending such an incredible season on the fate of a character that was never central to it? Didn't feel like it would have fans buzzing until September.

Then, Elena grabbed that knife. Then, John cried Katherine?!? Then, my eyes bulged, her face morphed and we were left with the stunning realization: Katherine is back.

Just consider all the possibilities this allows for:

  • Damon goes into next season thinking he kissed Elena, which is ironic: just as this vampire discovers his humanity, his first major decision is to hurt the brother that saved his life. If Damon can truly feel now, I can't wait to see how he feels about that.
  • Of course, Damon actually got to first base with the woman he's been searching for since the 19th century. When will he find this out? And, while he may have referred to Katherine as a "bitch" last week, are his affections for her actually gone?
  • Let's mourn John Gilbert for his moment. Yeah, he's kind of a murdering bastard, but he had his reasons - and he's also Elena's birth father. Can't imagine she deals with his death well.
  • Was Isobel behind any of these developments? We know she's in contact with Katherine. Will we see Alaric's ex-wife again, as well? What is her true agenda?

Indeed, it was a stunning conclusion to what had been a somewhat meandering, disappointing episode. But that all changed with the thrust of Katherine's knife.

There's no new episode to tease for next week, so we'll just ask readers: How loudly did you scream when Elena kissed Damon? Do you feel jipped that it was actually Katherine? Or just curious and excited that she's back? Sound off now and consider the following Vampire Diaries quotes from "Founder's Day."

Damon: I'm not a hero, Elena. I don't do good. It's not in me.
Elena: Maybe it is. | permalink
Damon: Somewhere along the way, you decided I was worth saving. I wanted to thank you for that.
Elena: You're welcome. | permalink
Bonnie: You saw what I was able to do tonight. I know who I am now. If Damon spills one drop of human blood, I'll take him down. | permalink
Damon: Life sucks either way, Jeremy. At least if you're a vampire, you don't have to feel bad about it if you don't want to. | permalink
Jeremy: Even I can't remember why, I still feel empty, alone. Making me forget won't fix it. | permalink
Stefan: I try so hard to hate him, I guess it's just pointless.
Elena: You care about him, so do I. But I love, Stefan. | permalink

I thought this episode was awesome. I was shocked with Katerine at the end. I thought Elena was pissed Uncle John tried to Kill Damian and Stephen. Then I saw here eyes and I screamed, OMG Katherine. Also if she said, I love you to Stephen, and then kissed his brother, I would have not respected Elena. I was really hoping that Anna and Jeremy were gonna work out. I kinda like Damian as a bad ass more, but I do love the love triangle. But anyway that was an awesome episode.

Yeah!!! I remember the dress!!! it was in the 1st book!! For halloween I think!! She was dressed in a Renaissance gown!!!! Hey, you really made a good connection!! Totally forgot about it!!

well... the Damon/Bonnie Romance... NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!! looking at Bonnie right now, if it turns that way, I really hope they' ll manage it well. Beacause Bonnie HATES Damon...

So here are my thoughts on the whole Damon/Katherine thing; 1. wouldn't Damon have heard the lack of heartbeat that Elena had while they were kissing? I didn't think Vampires have beating hearts. Elena's heartbeat would have sped up at least a little bit (mine sure would LOL), and he would hear that. The fact that there was nothing should have tipped him off.
2. Katherine had a TOTALLY different outfit on. Damon probably wouldn't have noticed that, but I did.
3. Katherine was waiting for someone to invite her in. She wouldn't go inside until Jenna said "Its getting late, i think you should COME INSIDE."
4. When she and Damon were taking, Elena was only giving him one-word answers, which ELENA would not do. and the "Good deed" Damon was trying to do, Elena would have had some incling as to what it was... maybe...
5. Damon touched his lips afterward... maybe he tasted blood? what else could he taste on Katherine? and there certainly wouldnt have been any blood on Elena.
I still TOTALLY wasn't expecting it, but there are clues leading to it. (seriously though - i was sitting there with my mouth just hanging open in shock LOL)
Also, the part where Stefan and Damon see Elena in the period dress was totaly in the first (or second, i cant remember...) book. And i was SO waiting for them to do that in the show. i thought it was a really cute/foretelling scene (both in the book/show)
So i think when the show comes back, Elena will find John dead, call Stefan/Damon panicked (or Stefan will come find her - she said she would meet him at the hospital) and then there will be a lovely Elena/Katherine/Stefan/Damon reunion.
OR Damon never left the house because he was suspicious and hanging around just to keep an eye on things, and will save the day.
The rest is up in the air!! i have no clue!!
all I can say I LOVE THIS FRIGGIN SHOWWW!! i can't wait for September now!

OMG! That was the perfect way to end the season! And yes, I was screaming when Elena kissed Damon. I paused my DVR and stared at the T.V for about 15 minutes to make sure, thats what was happening. Once I found out that it was Katherine...I was wondering, shouldn't Damon been able to figure out that he was kissing a vampire? The more I kept rewinding the events of Mystic Falls, I realized that Elena had on a long sleeve shirt but the person that kissed Damon had on a leather jacket....HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THAT! I am glad that John Gilbert has met his match with Katherine. It would be totally cool if Katherine locked Elena up and pretended to be Elena; messing with the Salvatore brothers. Jer and his pill taking scene, I could have done without. I was hoping for something less girly. Shoot yourself, jump of the house, get hit by a car....anything other than taking pills. But I have to hand it to the writers. If they write Jer as a vampire he would be one cute vamp. Oh and how cool are the werewolves plot. The werewolf plot in the books did not develop into anything big, but I hope the show changes that.

OK. not to get off the finale subject...I'm not looking forward to Bonnie and Damon Romance, althought the book says it. I seriously don't like it to happen on the show. What do you guys think?

iwas so shocked. it surprised me so much when isaw that it was katherine. nut i just couldntt put two and two together when i saw her stabbing john. then when he said katherine? it all just made a lot more sense. also, iwas really confused when tyler and his father collapsed. ithought maybe they were becoming vampires! when damon kissed katherine ireally thought it was elena but i sensed something was wrong when jenna came and "elena" said she didnt wanna talk about it. why do elena and katherine look identical?@##$ it bothers me. damon just keeps gitting his heart broken and i feel bad, but i love stephan & elena together. who will stephan choose when he finds katherine came back?, what if she wants him and not damon.. there will we some problems. ! when does the next one come out?

"Damn! 0.0" was all I could think when I re-watched the 'kiss.' I( DID NOT see it coming that it was Katherine the whole time. I suppose after re-watching Katharine's small scene with Damon, it all makes sense now. Clues that I missed: -No necklace (though her collar was pretty high)
-Very vague answers
-She ACTUALLY let damon kiss her
-She was "invited in"
-The weird creepy thing she did behind the fridge I couldn't believe that Alena was looking at John's ring. O.O What are you thinking Alena?! You can't kill your birthfather! Damn, was I surprised that it was Katherine all along. I was fooled up until John called her Katherine. The writers outdid themselves this time around! Props.

I totally agree! For the touching lips part. It could have been for whether he's soo suprised by the kiss and liked it, or the theory that he new something was wrong about so not Elena.
For Bonnie, yeah I was so glad when she saved them, because I didn't trust her at all! I thought it was like she would let him go through the fire and close it behind him to trap him. Katherine playing Elena a little while is kinda interesting and they will probably do that. Put two Nina side by side is a bit difficult.

I do not think that Damon realized he kissed Katherine and not Elena. I think he touched his lips because he felt something with the kiss and couldn't believe that Elena felt that way. I think it would be interesting if Katherine did lock up Elena and pretend to be her for a while. I don't really care whether Caroline lives or not, she's annoying. I'm glad that Bonnie let Damon & Stefan lived or I would have been pissed. She better not make Elena choose between her and Stefan. If Jeremy really wanted to die he should have done something besides take a bunch of pills. I hope that Elena actually sees Katherine in the kitchen and doesn't just come in and find John dead. I do not think she will see Kathering though. I think that she's going to find John and then Damon is going to say something about them kissing and she's going to get really confused.
