Gossip Girl Season Three Report Card: B

at . Comments

The 2009-10 season may be in the books, but a new season is just a few months away, and in the meantime, the break gives us a chance to offer up critiques on various programs.

Heading into the summer, TV Fanatic will grade and review a number of the small screen's biggest hits. Most recently, The Good Wife received an A from our editor-in-chief.

Now, on to Gossip Girl - a show with a fan base so fanatical that it truly belongs on a site called TV Fanatic, and will surely have plenty of its own opinions to share below.

What did we think of the third season of the CW drama? Who was its best character? Did it live up to expectations? Where are we headed next? Read on. Find out. Chime in.

Best character: Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf (tie). Disclaimer: This is not to disparage other characters, all of which we enjoy. But to us, Chuck and Blair remain the heart of Gossip Girl. Together or apart, Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester steal every scene with humor, passion, chemistry and just enough mischief under the surface to keep things interesting.

Worst character: We don't even have to say.

A Chair Heart to Heart

Chuck and Blair remain the heart and soul of Gossip Girl.

Best use of guest stars: Michelle Trachtenberg is always great as Georgina Sparks, who always seems to stir up trouble and had quite a surprise for Dan in the season's closing moments. On the flip side, no disrespect to Sebastian Stan, Desmond Harrington and William Baldwin, but some guest stars (cough, Hilary Duff) take away more screen time than they're worth.

Best episode: "The Debarted." The first half of the season ended on a bittersweet note as Chuck came to terms with Bart's death, one year later, with the help of Blair. Meanwhile, Serena's affair with Tripp blew up in her face and landed her in a hospital bed. Nate heroically came to Serena's physical and emotional rescue. Vintage Gossip Girl - more so than the OMFG season finale.

Best storyline: The downward spiral of Jenny Humphrey. In a season that many fans felt lacked the drama of the first two, Little J won't be getting any of the blame. She turned on pretty much everyone, her own father and brother included, became a hard ass drug dealer, and slept with Chuck freaking Bass. That will be a tough act to follow next season - and we can't wait.

Worst storyline: One of the best things we can say about Season 3 is that most episodes were enjoyable on their own - nothing stands out as glaringly weak. Still, the characters' stories didn't flow very well at times, and the season began slowly at NYU. Also, the various plot lines were detached off from each other a lot, and certain arcs, such as Chuck's mom, were full of holes.

Hopes for 2010-11: That Chuck returns to health. Ascension to elite status for Blair at Columbia and more struggles for social supremacy overall. Story lines for Nate and Serena that doesn't necessarily involve a relationship, or each other. A dramatic clash between Jenny and Blair as J returns to Manhattan. As for couples we hope to see, we leave that debate to you.

Overall grade: B. The fact that only a minority of respondents to our survey listed Season 3 as their favorite speaks to its overall inconsistency. It was perfectly enjoyable, with few if any bad weeks, but there was a continuity missing. Near the end of the year, when the gang finally got back together and Nate reminisced about past schemes, it was like he spoke for us as well.

That's why we're giving it a B for the season. While we love it week in and week out, the fire was missing for significant stretches. As things intensified in April and May, the producers found it again, leaving us with a shocker of a finale that sets the stage for some potentially amazing developments. With renewed focus on characters in the right situations, it can get better.

What were your impressions of the season - and what would you like to see in Season Four? What characters and episodes worked best and which did not? Discuss below!

You all need to calm down... lmao It's just a show, it's entertaining, no matter how much we hate some of it. As long as the show makes you all feel something it's good. Don't get so worked up. Because fighting on this website is a waste of time, everyone has their own opinions... that's life.

Peonies and stockings

Yes, I am totally selita and jenny. I changed my use of capitalization and punctuation to write jenny's post, so it would be less obvious, but you got me though, damn it!
As we are at it you should know I am also "clouds like bubbles", everyone else that ever said anything against Chuck/Blair and wrote some of the super nutty pro Chuck/Blair comments on here, just to make you look bad. The ratings after 3x18 probably increased because it was a pretty solid episode, and decreased after 3x19 because it was really boring. The ratings after 3x12 probably decreased because of the long hiatus, lack of promotion and people giving up on the show after the first half of the season. The writing is bad. That's why half of the viewership bailed on the show within the last two years. Not because Chuck and Blair broke up four episodes ago.

in season 4 i realy hope to see dan and serena get back together, i love them 2 as a couple and i thought that the season finale between them was realy cute when you could see that dan still had feelings for her and booked a flight to paris, awwww :) but georgina was again came back to spoil things between them, bitch haha but she is great for drama in the show :) cant wait for season 4 to start :)

Clouds like bubbles

peonies, ILY, don't waste your time on Chair fappers.

OHH I see your point:):)
you love to manipulate your boyfriend to have a gaykiss only for having nothing but you can never accept your boyfiends manipulation to make you have sex with someone rapist you have already slept with and called it comfort sex in your down mood times.
we aren't talking about a Blair ,the most honest character of the show but her bf manipulated her.sorry but Blair deserved everything after having sex with uncle Jack secretly and called it comfort sex;call that uncle again secretly again;manipulate Chuck to have gaykiss for nothing.
Blair isn't saint, she is also as manipulative as Chuck ,they are too much alike and thats why they are meant to be together.CHAÄ°R HAS TO BE A COUPLE AGAÄ°N FOR THE SHOWS OWN GOOD.

oh and CB fan i want to add.
when chair break up in 3x18 and cw release chair forever promo to do damage control. the rating goes back up at 2 million. and after that chair hasn't gotten back together the rating is fall again at 1.7.

you are completely true.As peonies by herself admitted also, the ratings decreased after 3x12.it was when 3x19 scripts leaked during the winter hiatus, people learned that Chuck and Blair were going to break up so they started to complain and threatened that they are going to stop watching the show. Finally they did ,and ratings started to drop episode by episode, thats why CW needed to air a 1 min. Chair forever promo.I hope they learned their lesson well and on s4 they could give Chair more screentime together instead of making them supportive characters.and reunit them asap.

The hugest decrease is right after 3x12, an episode that fans basically called "BEST EPISODE FOR CHAIR EVAAR" Seriously? Did you forget that during the hiatus was when the news of the Chair breakup from the 3x19 sides that were leaked online came out.

you said Chuck and Blair aren't the cause the rating dropped?
then lets take out Chuck and Blair from GG and see what will happen.... @yelena
i would love to see that happen. then i can leave this crappy show for once and peacefully.
then GG would be full of crap.
leigh and ed save this show. @lmao.
you are so right.
they are def the same person. peonies. just look at the time. it's almost the same time they are posting.

And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell ... You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

[to Jenny] That's the thing. You need to be cool to be queen. Anne Boleyn thought only with her heart and she got her head chopped off. So her daughter Elizabeth made a vow never to marry a man. She married a country. Forget boys. Keep your eye on the prize, Jenny Humphrey. You can't make people love you, but you can make them fear you. For what it's worth, you're my Queen. I choose you.
