Gossip Girl Season Three Report Card: B

at . Comments

The 2009-10 season may be in the books, but a new season is just a few months away, and in the meantime, the break gives us a chance to offer up critiques on various programs.

Heading into the summer, TV Fanatic will grade and review a number of the small screen's biggest hits. Most recently, The Good Wife received an A from our editor-in-chief.

Now, on to Gossip Girl - a show with a fan base so fanatical that it truly belongs on a site called TV Fanatic, and will surely have plenty of its own opinions to share below.

What did we think of the third season of the CW drama? Who was its best character? Did it live up to expectations? Where are we headed next? Read on. Find out. Chime in.

Best character: Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf (tie). Disclaimer: This is not to disparage other characters, all of which we enjoy. But to us, Chuck and Blair remain the heart of Gossip Girl. Together or apart, Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester steal every scene with humor, passion, chemistry and just enough mischief under the surface to keep things interesting.

Worst character: We don't even have to say.

A Chair Heart to Heart

Chuck and Blair remain the heart and soul of Gossip Girl.

Best use of guest stars: Michelle Trachtenberg is always great as Georgina Sparks, who always seems to stir up trouble and had quite a surprise for Dan in the season's closing moments. On the flip side, no disrespect to Sebastian Stan, Desmond Harrington and William Baldwin, but some guest stars (cough, Hilary Duff) take away more screen time than they're worth.

Best episode: "The Debarted." The first half of the season ended on a bittersweet note as Chuck came to terms with Bart's death, one year later, with the help of Blair. Meanwhile, Serena's affair with Tripp blew up in her face and landed her in a hospital bed. Nate heroically came to Serena's physical and emotional rescue. Vintage Gossip Girl - more so than the OMFG season finale.

Best storyline: The downward spiral of Jenny Humphrey. In a season that many fans felt lacked the drama of the first two, Little J won't be getting any of the blame. She turned on pretty much everyone, her own father and brother included, became a hard ass drug dealer, and slept with Chuck freaking Bass. That will be a tough act to follow next season - and we can't wait.

Worst storyline: One of the best things we can say about Season 3 is that most episodes were enjoyable on their own - nothing stands out as glaringly weak. Still, the characters' stories didn't flow very well at times, and the season began slowly at NYU. Also, the various plot lines were detached off from each other a lot, and certain arcs, such as Chuck's mom, were full of holes.

Hopes for 2010-11: That Chuck returns to health. Ascension to elite status for Blair at Columbia and more struggles for social supremacy overall. Story lines for Nate and Serena that doesn't necessarily involve a relationship, or each other. A dramatic clash between Jenny and Blair as J returns to Manhattan. As for couples we hope to see, we leave that debate to you.

Overall grade: B. The fact that only a minority of respondents to our survey listed Season 3 as their favorite speaks to its overall inconsistency. It was perfectly enjoyable, with few if any bad weeks, but there was a continuity missing. Near the end of the year, when the gang finally got back together and Nate reminisced about past schemes, it was like he spoke for us as well.

That's why we're giving it a B for the season. While we love it week in and week out, the fire was missing for significant stretches. As things intensified in April and May, the producers found it again, leaving us with a shocker of a finale that sets the stage for some potentially amazing developments. With renewed focus on characters in the right situations, it can get better.

What were your impressions of the season - and what would you like to see in Season Four? What characters and episodes worked best and which did not? Discuss below!

selita and jenny, it's clear you two are the same person, probably peonies wont fix anything, LMAO, how sad.

i seriously stopped watching this show because of chair
they are fucking boring and ugly together
blair deserves more than what chuck gives her
he humiliates her and makes her feel like shit
stupid, stupid chair fans

@peonies won't fix anything you rock!! :)

@peonies won't fix anything
you said Chuck and Blair aren't the cause the rating dropped?
then lets take out Chuck and Blair from GG and see what will happen....

Peonies and stockings

It's funny how I didn't say anything about Dan, but everyone reacts like I just said "DAN RUUULEZ! CHUCK AND BLAIR SUUUUCK!". But don't worry, it burns though. Totally. Ladies, let me point out something for you: If you think the lack of Chuck/Blair scenes/their storyline made S3 suck, that's your opinion and I frankly don't give a fuck, BUT when you say the ratings dropped because of the lack of Chuck/Blair scenes, I might scream "LOL, WHAT?" because it's not true. Check that statistic out: http://i39.tinypic.com/24oykj8... So ratings dropped and dropped ever since 2x01. The only decrease I could connect to Chuck & Blair is the one after 2x15, the elevator break-up. In season 3? The hugest decrease is right after 3x12, an episode that fans basically called "BEST EPISODE FOR CHAIR EVAAR". So, regardless of what you and your friends think, I don't see how the dropping ratings have anything to do with Chuck and Blair. It might be the overall suckishness of the show these days. irst of all your nickname totally sucks because peonies fixed everything,Blair even didn't need a peony to reunit with Chuck because her deep love is enough for everything as you saw how willingly she went to Chuck on the final. I see your point.
emotional abuse & sexism = EPIC ROMANCE

I noticed something in this site (especially in the forum section), the four or five dan's fans here hate Chuck, and it's only because they are jealous. Go to twitter and you are gonna see there are a lot more tweets about Chuck Bass then boring Dan Humphrey. The media loves Chuck Bass, while they really dont care about Dan. So whatever, let's move on people, let the few Dan's fans hate Chuck and chair, we all know that chuck, blair and chair are the most popular in the show, so why care about what judgmental and annoying dan's fans think?

@peonies And LMAO, of course you are a Dan's fan, so judgmental and full of yourself. LOL at that sentence. so true.
get over it. dan is so fucking boring. his threesome is so lame. he couldn't handle the sl, and for fun sl he didn't quite make it. and if dan were given heavy drama like chuck and blair ??
i'm 100 percent sure dan won't pull it off. face it.
ur icon is suck.
CB pawn GG !

@peonies won't fix anything
first of all your nickname totally sucks because peonies fixed everything,Blair even didn't need a peony to reunit with Chuck because her deep love is enough for everything as you saw how willingly she went to Chuck on the final.Next season also it will be just like that.you will see how she willingly goes to him again.they are destinied,like two half of a whole.
The exact reason of dropped ratings were too short Chair scenes but useless long Dan scenes.He makes everyone bored,accept it and move on.CHAÄ°R Ä°S THE ONLY REASON FOR ALL THE PEOPLE GG PASSÄ°ON..

I also think it's about time the stupes that bring us these meaningless caption contests, idiot polls, and fake report cards start signing their names under these blurbs, so we can bash them directly. "We're giving it a B", my ass. Stop being Josh's stooges, show some brain, and write something meaningful for a change.

This is the kind of fake report card that F students bring home to show their parents. This time, the adults are pulling this crap on you, kids.

And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell ... You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

[to Jenny] That's the thing. You need to be cool to be queen. Anne Boleyn thought only with her heart and she got her head chopped off. So her daughter Elizabeth made a vow never to marry a man. She married a country. Forget boys. Keep your eye on the prize, Jenny Humphrey. You can't make people love you, but you can make them fear you. For what it's worth, you're my Queen. I choose you.
