Gossip Girl Season Three Report Card: B

at . Comments

The 2009-10 season may be in the books, but a new season is just a few months away, and in the meantime, the break gives us a chance to offer up critiques on various programs.

Heading into the summer, TV Fanatic will grade and review a number of the small screen's biggest hits. Most recently, The Good Wife received an A from our editor-in-chief.

Now, on to Gossip Girl - a show with a fan base so fanatical that it truly belongs on a site called TV Fanatic, and will surely have plenty of its own opinions to share below.

What did we think of the third season of the CW drama? Who was its best character? Did it live up to expectations? Where are we headed next? Read on. Find out. Chime in.

Best character: Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf (tie). Disclaimer: This is not to disparage other characters, all of which we enjoy. But to us, Chuck and Blair remain the heart of Gossip Girl. Together or apart, Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester steal every scene with humor, passion, chemistry and just enough mischief under the surface to keep things interesting.

Worst character: We don't even have to say.

A Chair Heart to Heart

Chuck and Blair remain the heart and soul of Gossip Girl.

Best use of guest stars: Michelle Trachtenberg is always great as Georgina Sparks, who always seems to stir up trouble and had quite a surprise for Dan in the season's closing moments. On the flip side, no disrespect to Sebastian Stan, Desmond Harrington and William Baldwin, but some guest stars (cough, Hilary Duff) take away more screen time than they're worth.

Best episode: "The Debarted." The first half of the season ended on a bittersweet note as Chuck came to terms with Bart's death, one year later, with the help of Blair. Meanwhile, Serena's affair with Tripp blew up in her face and landed her in a hospital bed. Nate heroically came to Serena's physical and emotional rescue. Vintage Gossip Girl - more so than the OMFG season finale.

Best storyline: The downward spiral of Jenny Humphrey. In a season that many fans felt lacked the drama of the first two, Little J won't be getting any of the blame. She turned on pretty much everyone, her own father and brother included, became a hard ass drug dealer, and slept with Chuck freaking Bass. That will be a tough act to follow next season - and we can't wait.

Worst storyline: One of the best things we can say about Season 3 is that most episodes were enjoyable on their own - nothing stands out as glaringly weak. Still, the characters' stories didn't flow very well at times, and the season began slowly at NYU. Also, the various plot lines were detached off from each other a lot, and certain arcs, such as Chuck's mom, were full of holes.

Hopes for 2010-11: That Chuck returns to health. Ascension to elite status for Blair at Columbia and more struggles for social supremacy overall. Story lines for Nate and Serena that doesn't necessarily involve a relationship, or each other. A dramatic clash between Jenny and Blair as J returns to Manhattan. As for couples we hope to see, we leave that debate to you.

Overall grade: B. The fact that only a minority of respondents to our survey listed Season 3 as their favorite speaks to its overall inconsistency. It was perfectly enjoyable, with few if any bad weeks, but there was a continuity missing. Near the end of the year, when the gang finally got back together and Nate reminisced about past schemes, it was like he spoke for us as well.

That's why we're giving it a B for the season. While we love it week in and week out, the fire was missing for significant stretches. As things intensified in April and May, the producers found it again, leaving us with a shocker of a finale that sets the stage for some potentially amazing developments. With renewed focus on characters in the right situations, it can get better.

What were your impressions of the season - and what would you like to see in Season Four? What characters and episodes worked best and which did not? Discuss below!

"Worst character: We don't even have to say" There were so many awful characters... scott, elisabeth fisher, olivia, vanessa, jenny, tripp, bree buckley... so who's exactly?

the worst thing about season 3 was chair!
chuck is the WORST character on the show
he can't seem to grow the fuck up and be the man that blair deserves

chair sucks!

Dan and Vanessa are the most annoying characters. Blair, Chuck, Nate and Serena for the win, but chair is the best

I would like to see a whole new character step in and mix things up a little bit. The show need a new spark. They need to bring back a piece of season one. There is just something that is missing. I agree with everyone who says that Chuck and Blair need more hot scenes, that's something that is missing from the previous seasons. Why did they give the hot scenes to Serenate? But I think Chair still have the chemistry and they have had their most beautiful scenes in season three. Epic scenes. Serena is so annoying! Like everything she do annoys me. The episodes with her daddy issues she has just been whining all the time. I liked her the first half of the season, but after that not so much. Dan and Vanessa, huh? They have not done a single important thing this entire season. Give them a real storyline! Jenny is a good girl gone bad. I'm excited to se what's gonna happen to her when she comes back. Nate need a good storyline and more screentime because he's so hot! It's been a good season, but I hope season four is even better. The finale episode was OMG and left things exciting. It's a good way to end a season that way because it makes people wanting more. At least I do! I wanna know what's gonig to happen to Chuck! I'm so excited about the new season! Please make it a good one!

hopes for season 4:
-chair to be back together and rule gossip girl!!i hope they both get back together and blair forgive chucks fault for sleeping with jenny...seeing them togethr is just the best part coz they have the chemistry..its a really hard thing to find a good chemistry between characters...and for chair to play their games..(i hopr new and more fun games) -blair to be famous and be the queen in columbia, cause she just suit that kind of character popular and became all bitcy and dictates everybody..i love how she destroys other people.. -more scandalour story like season 1 or 2 even though i also like season 3 but season 1 or 2 is pretty good cause their more scandallous aand hard to guess...

worst character: the girls from columbia who denied blair...

Best Character: Chuck and Blair. Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester rules this show. Everybody knows that.
Best episode: The Lost Boy was a good episode. Beacause it was comedic and the Chuck and Blair scenes were fun.

Best Character: I must go with the mainstream and also say Chair Worst Character: Serena, honestly this season she was DAMN annoying with her problems and her BIG secrets which she couldn't tell which turned out to not to be so big and I just ahted the way she was treating Nate, always shutting him out of things and getting pissed at him if he tries to find out what's going on with her. Best use of guest stars: I've also got to agree that it's Michelle Trachtenberg because when she's on the screen it means somethings about to go down also I'd like to say I loved it when Jack Bass was on screen he was so funny eventhough he demolished Chair. Worst use of guest stars: Hilary Duff what next Miley Cyrus?? The day that happens I'm surely tuning out. It just felt like I was watching another episode of Lizzie Mcguire and I mean the whole story line between whoever-she-played and Dan was lame... Best Episode: The Sixteen Year Old virgin, I just loved the idea of Jenny being a rebel and going with the bad boy and the scene where nate tries to stop Damien from taking Jenny was awesome. Worst Episode: I can't even remember the name but it was the episode where Serena runs off with Tripp, once again Serena and her very stupid drama and her very stupid judgement skills that make her think that her very stupid actions were justified. Best Storyline: Jenny's shift. I'm loving every single bit of it seriously the writers are awesome in this!! I mean on season 1 she had a cliche story (good girl trying to fit in and getting trampled in the way) but now it's good girl gone bad. Jenny's going worse than Serena (I guess...?) I mean she lost her virginity to Chuck bass (which I hated at the start but I am now content with it) Worst Storyline:
I'd say Serena's whole existance in season 3 but to narrowb it down it would have to be Serena's and Nate's long waited relationship. It was simply annoying... I mean she first picks Tripp and it takes her a fricking car crash to make her want Nate all of a sudden???? And Nate just complies??? And their drama... ugh.. don't get me started... My Hopes:
-What happened to the crazy bitch in town (Blair)? I miss her devious days where she destroyed people and I miss when she ruled constance so I hope in columbia she'll regain her crown. I mean I loved it how she got Both Vanessa and Olivia to get back in the play by blackmailing and how she attempted to get to do that NYU speech.
-Nate going bad like it was foreshadowed in the season finale
-Georgina's baby's father not being Dan -Rufus being that "chill" dad he used to be -Serena having less stupid drama, less stupid choices or just less screentime in general -Jenny having an epic return and when ther's a showdown with Blair don't make it the usual Jenny tries gives up runs home to her daddy crying. My Only Nightmare:
Serena and nate will get back together; I mean their whole relationship was horrible please please let it be done for good.

Gossip Girl Quotes

And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell ... You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

[to Jenny] That's the thing. You need to be cool to be queen. Anne Boleyn thought only with her heart and she got her head chopped off. So her daughter Elizabeth made a vow never to marry a man. She married a country. Forget boys. Keep your eye on the prize, Jenny Humphrey. You can't make people love you, but you can make them fear you. For what it's worth, you're my Queen. I choose you.
