Gossip Girl Review: Chuck Bass Between Worlds

at .

Chuck: Your world would be easier if I didn't come back.
Blair: It wouldn't be my world without you in it.

"Double Identity" and "Belles Du Jour," last week's season premiere, were essentially one Gossip Girl event, with the same gorgeous Parisian setting and set of burning questions.

While Georgina Sparks is clearly up to no good, Dan's baby mama drama is still a big mystery, as are the true intentions and motivations of Katie Cassidy's character, Juliet Sharp.

The big development of the week was the much-anticipated reunion of Chuck and Blair. It was a great scene, but might as well have come equipped with a TO BE CONTINUED sign.

A Fleeting Glimpse

By chance, Blair locks eyes with Chuck in France.

"Double Identity" was a fitting title for an episode that featured Chuck Bass between worlds. He does not have amnesia, but is actively trying to purge himself of everything he did.

Be it with Blake Lively, Leighton Meester or guest star Clemence Poesy, Ed Westwick was terrific in every scene. Watching him, you just feel Chuck's inner torment. It's captivating.

The complexity of Chuc is such that between his goal of living simply and earning people's respect, and how he hung onto that ring, you see him as admirable despite his flaws.

The climactic moment when Blair comes face to face with the soul mate he vowed to forget may not meet "epic" standards from Chair 'shippers, but it was pretty darn close.

She encourages him not to run from who he is, because she genuinely cares, and because she feels she's better than that. Even B herself seems conflicted as to how she feels.

I'm Chuck Bass. His signature line was used once again, but in an entirely new context. Having taken Blair's sage advice to heart, Chuck revealed his true identity ... to Eva.

It seems as though Chuck remains indebted to Eva for helping him not only physically, but spiritually. She found him at his all-time lowest point and made his rebirth possible.

Needless to say, how his relationship with the European beauty progresses in NYC - and in light of his run-in with the ladies from the UES in Paris - will be fascinating to watch.

Will a return to New York bring back the Chuck of old? Or will he still try to distance himself from past events and people, forging a new life with Eva? What is next for Chair?

Blair and Chuck in Paris

A stunning Blair and a shabby Chuck finally come face-to-face.

In last week's Round Table discussion, we mused that Juliet might have been Gossip Girl, and that Georgina's baby was not fathered by Dan. Looks like she's not, and it wasn't.

Beyond that, we're still in the same position we were a week ago. Juliet plotted to help Nate win Serena back by playing up Dan's feelings for Vanessa. A brilliant move, until ...

Lies were exposed, and motives were questioned, as they always are on Gossip Girl. What is Juliet hiding? Is she a creepy, social-climbing stalker who now genuinely likes Nate?

Or, is sabotaging Serena’s life her primary objective and Nate merely a pawn? The buildup and Katie Cassidy's awesomeness have raised our expectations. Hopefully they are met.

One additional note about Dan and Nate: How great are these two as friends? Dudes are so much simpler and more understanding. Girls might kill each other in this position.

As for Georgina, we don't even know where to start. At some point, it's got to come out that Dan is not Milo's dad, right? And why did she dump him on D? Still a big mystery.

Rufus could be instrumental in finding out. We enjoyed his role in these first two episodes, and get the sense that if Dan won't take matters into his own hands, his dad might.

While his ambivalence to the Milo situation is perplexing, Dan's conflicted feelings about Serena and Vanessa are not. He clearly cares for both. Where's his head (and heart) at?

All in all, we thought the first two episodes of the fall were very good, and certainly set the stage for a terrific Season Four. We just hope the payoff is worth it across the board.

How did you feel about "Double Identity" and how the season is shaping up in the early going? What was your favorite / least favorite part of last night's show?
