Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Review: "With You I'm Born Again"

at . Comments

Okay! So we were all anticipating and wondering how Shonda Rhimes would bring back our beloved surgeons from such a traumatic season finale and I must say, I think she did a pretty decent job with last night's episode, "With You I'm Born Again."

Obviously, you can tell that Lexie is not the only one who is dealing with PTSD and from all the flashbacks that we saw, it looks like every one of our Seattle docs are.

An R-Webb Photo

The only doc that had me laughing and smiling was Chief Weber. Hail to the Chief! Boy! That man has moves! I loved every second of him doing his victory dance.

It was also pretty cute having Meredith be the one to find him. It really solidifies the father-daughter bond that I see growing between them.

Dr. Perkins is the new doc in town trying to figure out who's ready to go back to work and who isn't. By the looks of it, he is not on Meredith's favorite people list.

One by one each doctor recounts what transpired during and after the mass murder. Here is a brief summary for each of our main characters:

  • Bailey is still trying to hold everything in her life together with "tape and glue" so she finally confronts her budding romance with Ben and tells him it's just not the right timing.
  • Alex decides to keep the bullet that is lodged inside of him to pick up chicks. He breaks up with Lexie because he can't deal with another crazy chick.
  • Lexie is the most obvious person dealing with PTSD. Sloan commits her and Dr. Perkins releases her back to her job after a good night's rest (or three).
  • Cristina and Owen decide to marry each other. After her meeting with Dr. Perkins, she realizes that she just wants to be a simple woman because no one ever shoots a simple woman.
  • Derek quits his job as chief and gets arrested a bunch of times for speeding. He feels guilty because it was him who the shooter was after.
  • Meredith has yet to tell Derek about the miscarriage. She knows that this is something that could really put Derek (and herself) over the edge, but still wont say anything.
  • Arizona is freaked out that Callie wants to start trying to have a baby, but all she really wants is Arizona to move in permanently. Arizona is overjoyed.
  • Jackson and April are still just trying to fit in.

Because of all the flashbacks of what transpired in last season's finale, I know these issues are just the tip of the iceberg for all of the characters. Something big will have to hit in order for them to move past the experience and work in the same environment again.

One really great part of last night's episode had to be Lexie telling off Alex when she said: "You think that you're so bad ass because you lived, but I'm the reason why you lived. And while you were dying you were crying out for the wife who left you. So that's the opposite of bad ass for whatever it's worth."

I wanted to get inside the TV and give her a high five! Last season I was kind of rooting for them to make it, but after the way he decided to treat her, I am SO over them.

An Alex Karev Photograph

Alex will always be the asshole guy with all the excuses why he's an asshole, but I'm just so over it! He needs a woman in his life that will help him man up. Do you think that woman could be Lexie? Or do you think Lexie and Sloan are MFEO?

All in all, I was pretty happy with the layout Shondra put together for the season premiere. I for one, can't wait to see what's in store for us this season!

Until next week, here are a few of my favorite Grey's Anatomy quotes from last night ...

Cristina: I think your either born simple or you're not. I want to be the person who gets happy over finding the perfect dress. I want to be simple because no one holds a gun to the head of a simple girl. | permalink
Alex: You look hot. The whole crazy eyes, tight dress thing is working for you for whatever it's for.
Lexie: You think that you're so bad ass because you lived, but I'm the reason why you lived. And while you were dying you were crying out for the wife who left you. So that's the opposite of bad ass for whatever it's worth. | permalink
Cristina: I never gave you any crap about your post-it.
Meredith: You look beautiful.
Cristina: I know. How's Owen? Is he good?
Meredith: Owen's perfect. He's perfect.
Cristina: Thank you. | permalink
Derek: (to Dr. Perkins) Life is short. So now I think less and just do. | permalink
Meredith: You're driving awfully fast Dr. Sheppard. Least you could do is wear a seat belt. | permalink
Owen: That was quite a show this morning.
Derek: I didn't plan it.
Owen: That made it even better. Any regrets?
Derek: No, any regrets to proposing to Cristina?
Owen: None.
Derek: Getting shot turns out to not be the worst thing after all.
Owen: I need a best man. I know I know we're not that close, but I don't know, you being married to the other twisted sister I just thought it makes us brothers or something.
Derek: I'd be honored. It's an honor.
Owen: Thank you.
Derek: You need a bachelor party?
Owen: No.
Derek: Even better. | permalink
Callie: Welcome back Doctor Sheppard.
Derek: Thank you Doctor Torres. | permalink
Derek: The truth is I hate being chief. Chief Webber is our chief. | permalink
Cristina: I'm not wearing white - its sexist and vaguely racist. | permalink
Meredith: Every cell in the human body regenerates on average every seven years. Like snakes, in our own way we shed our skin. Biologically we are brand new people. We may look the same, we probably do, the change isn't visible at least in most of us, but we are all changed completely forever. | permalink

If anyone can tell me how to delete an extra copy of a post, I'd be happy to hear it. Yes, the Chief, the dancing celebration, the moves -- so WAY excellent. He looks so good in green! :) Well, it seems to me that Mark is taking care of Lexie. She may not realize it yet, but I think it is really significant. I agree that they belong together. I think the April character is going to be very interesting. Remember when we first hated Addison, all leggy and fabulous... I have compassion for April and her corn farming dad and sisters and school teacher mom. She is fragile. I guess I have compassion for fragile folk. :)

@MerDer4EveR - Alex owned Lexie nothing. She wasn't his girlfriend. Well that's not necessarily true, is it? First of all, when Lexie flat out asked Alex if they were a couple, he said that they were. Whether he meant it or not is beside the point; he lead Lexie to believe that they were together...that she was his girlfriend. And Lexie risked her life, and damn well nearly got shot in the process, going to the blood bank and back to get Alex the blood he desperately needed before he bled to death. She didn't have to do that. Yes, as a doctor she took an oath to save lives, but there was a crazed gunman on the loose and the hospital was on lockdown. She could have stayed in that conference room and watched him bleed to death and nobody would have blamed her for it because there would have been nothing she could do under the circumstances, yet she risked her life to save his. So to say that Alex owed Lexie nothing just doesn't ring true. She is the reason he is still alive, and when she needed him the most, he completely walked away from her. If he didn't want to be her boyfriend anymore, that was fine, but that doesn't mean he should have turned his back on her when she was falling apart. He could have been there for her as a friend. When somebody helps to save your life, you don't turn your back on them when they need you, I don't care what your damage is.

Ashley,
Your analysis is remarkable. You could be a professional like Ebert or whomever. I so appreciate the depth of your observations. I was also very p*ssed off that Dereck is risking his and others' lives with the reckless driving. I thought it was very cool of Meredith to leave him there in jail and make good on her threat. (I hate agressive drivers!) Calliope and Arizona (what two names could be more interesting?) I agree: YAY!!! Chief Webber, Jackson... DAMN! uh-huh. and other stuff not printable! :)

I'm so happy the wait came to an end in a great way. I loved last night's episode. Everyone is a ticking time-bomb; some are dealing with it (Lexie, Bailey, the Chief) and others are avoiding it like the plague (Meredith, Derek, Cristina and Alex). It's going to be very interesting to see what triggers their melt-downs and healing process. Chyler is FABULOUS. She almost had me in tears when Lexie melted down during the group session and when she was tending to the patient. Initially I was not a Lexie fan but she grew on me. SOOO very happy that they've kept this character and helped her mature. And I'm so glad that Lexie gave Alex a dose of reality. Though I understand why he abandoned her in her time of need, it does not make it right. It was very cruel to avoid her and then throw her melt down in her face as a "compliment." Alex needs to find constructive ways to deal with his pain -- stepping on the woman who helped to save his life because he was unable to save her in her time of need is not the way to go. Loved the way Sloan busted into Perkins office to admonish him about clearing Lexie for surgery. Although I understood Perkins' explanation, I'm with Mark. Lexie is a danger to herself and others and should not be holding a scapel near anyone. All hail the REAL Chief!!! As much as I love Derek, he was a HORRIBLE chief. So glad Richard is back because he is a true leader in that hospital. If I had any issue with yesterday's episode at all, it would be that the writer's did not use Meredith's visit to Richard to build upon their relationship. I don't think a sappy scene was necessary but I think Richard should have, in a fatherly way, encouraged Meredith to share her experience with Perkins. I definitely want to see more Richard and Meredith bonding this season. I love Derek...really I do...but he was an ASS yesterday. I'm so happy Meredith called him on his "speeding" after he failed to explain all of the risks of the surgery. Also, I'm so happy she followed through on her word and left him in jail after making sure he was okay. I understand that he feels responsible for everything that's happened including all of the deaths but he should remember what it felt like to see his Dad gunned down in front of him and pay attention to how Meredith's doing too. He, of all people, should know that it was painful to watch and even more painful to sit through his surgery to figure out if he would live or die. Not to mention that Meredith tends to hold things inside and allow it to fester in dark ways. Hello! Stop speeding and pay attention to your wife who is also enduring her on tragedy. It will be interesting to see how Cristina's marriage will play out considering that she married Owen so she wouldn't be alone and I wonder if he realizes that was her motive. The woman actually refused to look at an awesome surgery through the gallery window....you KNOW something is not right. Wow, I cannot wait to see Sandra Oh bring her A game once again when the walls tumble down on Cristina....and Owen. Let's see how he deals with her PTSD. Bailey....absolutely amazing. I love Chandra Wilson. I know Jason George will be on the new SR drama but I wish he fought a little harder for Bailey. It seemed way to easy to let go of someone you really care about. April...is so freaking annoying. I actually wish she was killed and Reed was spared. I love Jackson. He fits in well with Cristina and Meredith but I'd like to see him and Alex bond. Alex could use a guy friend. Teddy....wish she was killed too. So annoying but I'm not a Kim Raver fan and found her to be annoying on my other favorite shows - Third Watch and 24. All in all it was a great start after a shocking ending. Can't wait for next week :)

You guys are driving me nuts! I am agreeing with both sides of the argument! I also thought Lexie was being overly harsh to Alex b/c he broke my heart when he called out for Izzie. However, I also got the point that Lexie was "putting him in his place" for being a jerk (which Izzie also did). I feel totally szchizy on this issue. I have a tender spot for Alex b/c he tries so hard to protect himself with bravado and fooling around with "inappropriate women." Georgia, I don't understand what you said about Bailey. It wasn't that she couldn't keep a man -- in my opinion -- but that she was overwhelmed. He was ready to stay in it with her. She ended it. It was a VERY sad scene to me, the eye contact and pauses. I got tears in my eyes. No offense meant from me, but Bailey could have her choice of men. One reason I respect her is that she looks at "the whole picture." I tried to join in with this site, but they will not send me the confirmation. So I'm perpetually a "guest." I'm goin to Denver. (Just felt like saying that) :) I really loved the wedding. I loved that Christina wore that red dress. I was surprised that tiny little Meredith looked good with a BIG necklace, and so happy she supported Christina. Oh, and so surprised that Teddy is fooling around with Andrew (who is very hot). But you go, girl. ok. I have to breathe. Love you all. :)

I loved the episode! I agree that Lexie needed to say that to Alex! If you remember, Alex told Izzie that he appreciated everything she'd done for him and realized that he deserved more. Mark+Lexie forever!! Bailey can't keep a man, this was the perfect time for her to have a man around, someone who can at least be there to comfort her. You can't heal alone. But I feel bad for her, she's lost so many (and almost lost-Izzie, Meridith) of her interns/residents (O'Malley, etc). Idk JMO

it was amazing...i was one of those who didnt like the fact that Cristia and Owen getting married thing
but when I saw this episode wow, it change the prespective of all that

@Kristen
Hadn't thought about it that way...What you said, that if Lexie hadn't said anything,he would keep acting like that..That gives me a slightly different perspective!
I still think it was kind of cruel and I would prefer if she hadn't use against him something that happened while he was so vulnerable, but I get what you're saying and you have a point!

Grey's Anatomy Season 7 Episode 1 Quotes

When we say things like "people don't change" it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It's always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing despite every scientific indication that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience change that's up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.

Meredith

He's fine, we're all coming back to work today (pause - Meredith is thinking about Derek getting shot) - we are all fine.
