The Vampire Diaries Review: Damon Loves Elena!!!

at . Comments

Well, that was bloody fantastic.

The episode "Rose" had it all, from a brotherly road trip to an whirlwind of a fight to an outpouring of information to an entirely new direction for our favorite characters... and that was all before Damon caused every living room in American to fill up with dust when he finally told Elena the words he needed to say... just once.

I love you. Man, I'm gonna need a moment.

Brotherly Road Trip

Few shows can pull off the mix of action, answers and affection that was on display this week on The Vampire Diaries.

I might tear up again if I focus too much on the latter, so let's stop and try to make sense of the mythology that came streaming out of Rose's mouth this week.

Elena is a Petrova Doppleganger. We already knew this, but it sounds like she isn't the only one. Or there have at least been others through the years. Her blood can break the sun and the moon curse, which "the originals" are interested in doing, presumably so they can wreak some serious havoc.

QUESTIONS: Was Katherine actually trying to protect Elena? If so, why didn't she come out and tell her the same things Rose did? Also, what role does the moonstone play in all this?

There's a Klaus, too?!? This is both a point and a question. I can't fault a show that reveals so many answers on a weekly basis... but we were introduced to Rose, Elijah and Trevor all in the span of a few minutes. Then, we learn there's an even more powerful, ancient vampire out there? And he's also on the way?!?

That's a lot for a viewer to take in just one episode! At least we can sort through all this together, right, readers? That's what our Vampire Diaries forum is all about.

So, now we're left with a new set of enemies for the Mystic Falls gang to battle. And now they are a united front against whatever, or whoever, lies ahead. Stefan gave Damon a heartfelt speech and apology at the conclusion of the episode, which preceded the latter's moving words to Elena.

It looks like this sibling rivalry is truly over for a moment and that Klaus, Elijah and every other Original won't have an easy time taking what they want from Mystic Falls, not when the Salvatores have both found something to fight for.

A few other thoughts/questions:

  • The show has to be a little careful just having Bonnie cast whatever spell is most appropriate for a given situation. That can feel like a convenient way out for the writers, but at least there are grave consequences every time she does so.
  • Did events between her and Jeremy tilt your feelings on this potential hook-up one way or another?
  • Can Caroline really trust Tyler? Why do I have a strong feeling her secret won't remain between the two of them when all is said and done?
  • Way to Bing and decide, Jer!
  • You're a werewolf. Say it. Think this line, from Tyler to Caroline, was a purposeful wink at Twilight?
  • I found the use of the word "pardon" interesting. It appears as though the Originals abide by some form of law or code.
  • Impressions of Lauren Cohan as Rose? She'll be around for awhile.

I'll have plenty more to say in this week's Round Table, but now it's your turn: Comment away!

The tear falling out of Damon's eye at the end set me off crying :( I'm too old for this LOL Damn good episode, all-around!

I look forward to see Klaus , i always portrayed him (from the books) like kinda hot :)).
Oh , and although Katerina is a "slutty evil vampire" i don't blame her for some things she has done. All she did was to protect her and (somehow) the Salvatore brothers and her wanting to protect Elena reveals that she still has some humanity left there. i think the character is likable (although she's representing a villain) and Nina Dobrev has done a great job with it !

I'm on team elena, I love both guys so whoever she ends up with will be fine for me. :)

Amazing EPISODE! I loved every minute. I'm completly neutral when it comes to ships and stuff, so I wasn't to moved by the Delena scene. Bring on the next episode "Katerina" !

No.. because we will want most probably want the next Petrova doppelganger to stay alive too. So, unless the next doppelganger drives me nuts by hooking up with Damon to spite Elena, I hope she doesn't die either.

ohh my goodness the DELENA scene at the end had me in tears!! i wish he didnt have to compel her to forget :( ALSO am i the only one who was feelin' the tyler/caroline scenes? i could really see these two hooking up in the future. i love matt but omgggggg

I am officially crazy about Damon, it's not like I didn't frickin love him before this episode but he is AMAZING, Ian Somerhalder, equally amazing! DELENA...Julie & Kevin...make it happen! And that is beside all the crazy, scary and wicked things that took place in this episode! Man, TVD is just awesome every time!!

Oooh I am curious,, Klaus is also in the books, but from what I am seeing his involvement will be completely different from those. Nice to not know what to expect.

First of all, you're damn right. Very few shows on ALL the channels actually can hit you as hard as The Vampire Diaries does... and what's more - leave you panting for more each week! Second, Ian is one of the finest actors out there, and each week he surpasses what he does. That expression after he staked Elijah and saw Elena was fine, the other expression when she hugged Stefan, the one when Stefan was asking for forgiveness and the one when he told Elena he loved her - perfect all of them! I cried with him when he said he wished she wouldn't have to forget what he said, but she has too. He deserves all the popularity he's earned from this show - definitely!!! Bonnie and Jeremy are definitely cute - and whoever this new Lucas guy is, I want Bonnie and Jeremy to hit it off. They look good together. Caroline and Tyler - am not so much of a fan yet... But they're getting there, and it'll be amazingly interesting to see how two arch enemies of mother nature will be cooperating with each other. Definitely compelling!! I agree that the pace is really fast, but I think it wouldn't be Vampire Diaries and it wouldn't be as good as that if things weren't unrolling quickly and steadily. At least all the answers aren't kept or given off. They're revealed a little bit more with each episode. I even forgot about Katherine - I was so absorbed into what was happening. And I like that Rose girl, Vampire Diaries definitely lives up to it in the casting department. I wish they'd keep Trevor up a little bit more and killed him off later on though. I know he'll probably be there in flashbacks about how he messed up with Katherine, but I still wanted him to stick around for a while. Elijah is frightening. Scared the hell out of me when he was sniffing Elena around. Am glad he didn't die. It would be a waste, and quite frankly, it was ingenious to show that the 'originals' don't die off so easily. Brilliant! Have I also mentioned how I think Kevin and Julie hit the mark by showing the viewers what happened but not the characters on the show? It would be FUN watching Rose/Stefan/Damon's reaction on seeing Elijah back again, because we already know he's not dead. GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW! TVD definitely rocks... There's not ONE episode on the 30 episodes I hated yet and I can't remember that for a TV show since a long, long time now... Great going!!!

DELENA FTW! The scene at the end was so touching. Damon has changed so much since the beginning of the first season. I only wish Elena will start to realize her feelings for Damon.
