Vampire Diaries Preview: Into Katherine's Past...
Considering the mythology explained by Rose and the feelings admitted by Damon, we'll be discussing this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries for awhile. We encourage readers to read our detailed review and sound off with their thoughts on it.
But it's also time to look ahead already, as the official CW preview for "Katerina" is too juicy to ignore.
We'll delve into Katherine's past next week when Elena heads down to the tomb and confronts her fellow Petrova doppleganger. We'll also meet Luka, a new student played by Bryton James who has something in common with Bonnie. Check out an extended look at the episode below.

What I don't get is why they need to lift the curse... I mean they have rings for the sun, so what else got limited by the moonstone?

I think that Trevor "betrayed" the originals, by turning Katherine into a vampire and saving her from dying rather than sacrificing her like he was supposed to. I agree I think that the Petrovas set the daywalker/nightwalker curse, and that only their blood can lift it. But they need the doppleganger of the original Petrova who made the curse, leaving Katherine and Elena and whoever was before them to be targeted by the originals for their blood. Katherine turned to escape that fate, and now she's saying the only way for Elena to not end up being sacrificed is to turn, because they're all going to come after her since she is their very last hope at lifting the curse.

From what I am getting and thinking it's like this.
The Petrova's have probably been the ones that made the curse with the moonstone. So only Petrova blood will lift it. But you can't just use any Petrova, it has to be the doubleganger of the original Petrova that made the curse.
So Katherine was a doubleganger, and so is Elena. But since Katherine is now a vampire they can't use her for the curse (probably the reason why she became one in the first place)
But from what I saw in the promo I am guessing they kind of killed a large part of the Petrova family to get Katherine, so there lineage died out... They thought. Guess they were wrong, and it continued and then there was Elena who is now the last Petrova doubleganger. Well maybe after 500 years there will be another one depends on Elena but you get my train of thought.
I can be completely wrong so remember that this is just a theory.
Oh and maybe Katherine was trying to get the moonstone, not to give it

I wonder how this doppelganger business works. It has me completely befuddled. Are there more Elena/Katherine's out there or is Elena the only one? And why is Elena the key to unlocking the moonstone curse and is that why Katherine needs the moonstone for Klaus?

OMFG this is going to be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good! Probably the best episode ever! Can't wait!
