The Vampire Diaries Review: Elena Has to Die...

at . Comments

Talk about an episode of The Vampire Diaries with a lot of heart.

Or hearts, I should say. Torn out of the chests of werewolves. Many, many hearts were torn out of the chests of werewolves.

But, aside from violent deaths, "Crying Wolf" crammed a great deal into one hour,  from a life-altering decision by Tyler to numerous planted seeds that will grow as the season progresses. Into what? That's the question. So let's try to answer it by unpacking the busiest installment in recent memory.

At the Gilbert Lake House

Werewolf Domination vs. Werewolf Armageddon. Stevie laid out the issue of the moonstone rather well for Tyler. I know I'm supposed to hate these wolves, but I find myself understanding their point of view. Let's face it: most vampires are NOT like Stefan, or Damon when he's in a sensitive mood. These wolves have been feuding with their rival species for centuries, so it's hard to blame them for wanting to get the upper hand here.

That said, I pumped my fist and chest-bumped my wife each time Elijah sent a wolf to the Great Big Jungle in the Sky. I don't want them to win, I just appreciate a well-layered villain.

"Elena has to die." Luka made the stakes as clear as can be in his hypnotized state, and this is a major reason why I love
The Vampire Diaries. It doesn't just toss out questions that don't get answered for weeks, if at all. It continues to shock us with twists and turns and reveals that up the ante every Thursday night.

The challenging question now: what do the core characters do about Elijah? They clearly need him in their battle against the werewolves, as he proved once again by coming to Damon's rescue. How jarring was it, by the way, to see this Salvatore brother dominated so physically? (No, not in that way, ladies!)

Jonnie. Oh, it's on. Are you on board?

Another supernatural sibling. Let the guessing games begin. Who should play Luka's sister? Perhaps Keke Palmer?

The foreboding future. Consider all the groundwork this week that was laid out for the rest of season two: Jenna now has suspicions about Alaric. Can she remain in the dark about all the happenings in Mystic Falls forever?

Elena's parents were hunters, and I somehow doubt their game was venison or wild boar. What might those journals reveal? How might those weapons come into play? What about her mom and dad will Elena discover next? (Nice reminder of them via the cabin, by the way. It's easy to forget the pain and suffering Elena went through prior to meeting Stefan.)

And, most pressing of all: the turn. Stefan and Elena touched on their future for the first time this week, referring to it as a "box" that Elena wasn't ready to open. Stefan later found out why, of course. Does she really have a future? Assuming the answer is yes, and Klaus doesn't get to make his sacrifice, Stefan and Elena are headed toward the question that plagues all vampires and their human partners: To turn or not to turn?

All this, and we haven't even touched on the road trip Tyler is taking with Jules. When will we see him next? How else might she mold her friend's nephew into a vampire hater? We'll get to this topic in this week's Round Table, but let's turn this review over to the readers: WHAT DID YOU THINK?

OMG! Amazing episode! Everything was so great, especially Elena and Stefan getting to start talking about their future. Give it up Delena fans, it's not gonna happen.
Although I didn't like the end when Stefan and Elena were fighting, but I cannot blame Stefan for saying what he said to her. I am a little worried about the next episode, as I don't want Elena to think anything less of Stefan because of what he was in the past.

I Would like to see tyler and caroline together werewolf and vampire...after all wasn't it his uncle shaking up with a vampire too ... There is something strong with them and I loved bonnie and jeremy glad he is getting more involved.

I just wanted to say this is the best teen drama show on CW. It tops gossip girl and 90210. Great writing, excellent acting. These ppl on the VD really take their jobs seriously and it shows! Loved the episode. I hated tyler pretty much the whole episode until he redeemed himself with the Matt convo at the end. I'm in love with Elijah. Bad ass perfected.

This was a good episode- I especially loved Elijah ripping out the hearts of the werewolves- they need to go away! I am getting tired of all the lovey dovey Stefan and Elena crap- I am done with them as a couple- they are boring and have no chemistry.... Ian and Nina however do- so bring on Dalena!!!

Does anyone know when Tyler will be back !?
I just really want Caroline to understand how much she means to Tyler ! who cares about matt anymore

AMAZING episode!!!!Loved it....and we got some Stelena action!!WOOO!More!!there were so many OMFG moments it was hard to pick which one the best;Tyler leaving,Elijah saving Damon by ripping out the werewolves' hearts,Bonnie and Jeremy kiss,or finding out about Luka's sis and that Klaus will be weakest AFTER Elena is dead...So Hard.WBU?John is one pain in the ass and im also glad that Bradey FINALLY died.He was Uber freaky + very annoying!!!I don't want Tyler to go with sad that part when he left note for mom.CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK!!!It just keeps getting better and better! We need more Katherine!!She was really fun to watch!

I totally agree with E and Tilly...this show was amazing!!! It was really sad to see Stefan get mad at Elena when he was telling her that why did she ask him about their future if she was planning NOT to have a future....and well i mean its kinda true! I still cant wait for more fights against werewolves,AND next week with all the Stefan flashbacks!!!!exited:)

it was an amazing episode. When 9 pm came around i said it couldn't possibly be 9. there was no way that episode was a hour. it was exciting to watch that fight between Elijah and the other Wolves

Oh and even though I wanted him to die last week farwell to Brady, he was soo creepy and insane.

One word to describe this week was WOW. From Stefan ripping out Brady's heart, to Tyler leaving, to Tyler confessing to Matt he fell for Caroline, to Elijah (and his lovely hair) treating Damon like a rag doll and then saving him, to John finally giving Jenna some kind of clue, to Bonnie & Jeremy, to Luka's sister, to Alaric & Damon time all I can say is WOW. I am hoping this Tyler leaving with Jules is just a set up for him to come back all badass understanding is werewolf powers better. I teared up a little bit when he stood on Caroline's doorstep, the writers and actors did that scene very well. Can't wait for next week!! Oh more badass Stefan please two weeks in a row is great!
