The Vampire Diaries Review: This Means War...

at . Comments

I want the boy more than I want vengeance.
Let's get both.

It. Is. So. On.

For weeks during the hiatus that concluded last week, fans had heard about the impending vampire vs. werewolf war. On "Daddy Issues," it escalated. Big time. And poor Caroline suffered at the hand of the shot 'heard round the world. Or the shots heard 'round the world, really, wooden bullet style. Ouch.

Jules and Tyler

You know it's an exciting, action-packed episode when it starts and ends with Damon wet and naked... and those scenes are merely an afterthought.

While Damon did utter some classic lines this week (Vervain is an "acquired taste," he isn't that tall, etc.), there's not much to pick apart about him at this point. We get it: he loves Elena, he can't have Elena, he constantly struggles between good and evil. I love the character, but there's little new to say about that cycle right now.

Fortunately, this installment was a great platform for Caroline, Stefan and Tyler, while it did an tremendous job introducing Brady. It's easy to understand everyone's viewpoint in this burgeoning bloodbath, which is a sign of great writing.

Caroline is still new at this vampire thing and was trying to protect her friends, but when it backfired, she cut ties with Tyler. In response, he went back to the only real family he has right now - and can you blame him? His dad is dead, his uncle is dead and Jules is talking about a code of honor and loyalty. He could use a lot of that right now.

Stefan, meanwhile, is always trying to play peacemaker, but had no choice but to fight back when confronted in the woods. Can't imagine that brawl (one of the best filmed, most tense sequences in show history) will go a long way toward helping him earn Tyler's trust.

Then there's Brady. He's a villain, sure. But he's just living the life he knows. He's likely grown up around those who instilled in him a mortal hatred for vampires. I'm certainly not rooting for him in this feud (the guy doesn't even have a superhero haircut), but I appreciate that he comes across as a multi-dimensional character.

Overall, a tight, solid, focused hour of television that continued to raise the stakes. I'll leave you with a few questions:

  • Do you trust John?
  • How touching was that group hug between Elena, Bonnie and Caroline?
  • And the "I love you" mouthing. Sorry, Delena lovers.
  • Here's your first look at next week.

Whipped by damon

Loved it, like u said, any episode that begins and ends with a wet and naked ok by me! ;) Plus finally some action with werewolves vs vampires and information about the originals! Not much too complain about!

This looks like a good episode, however it seems Damon is becoming a cryer. He's lost his bad boy sense.
However he's still DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS!

Did we miss some development between Bonnie and Jeremy? They were all kind of awesome and couple-y in their brief scenes. Couldn't help but notice the violins playing in the background. Their storyline is surprisingly FTW. Well done on the relationship front VD, well done!

I didn't like this episode very much. There were so many torture scenes in Vampire Diaries tonight that it was more like watching an episode of "24." I disagree that tonight was good writing, because what is the point of making the werewolves so unsympathetic? They just seem like violent thugs -- so I guess the writers are trying to make up our minds for us as to who we're rooting for. Where's the fun in that? The plot didn't progress much in this episode, and Damon's identity crisis is starting to annoy me now. He's barely snarky any more, and it's way less fun to watch him eat people when he's going to cry about it. Now he's just a darker version of Stefan. Sad. Maybe that's a sign that he shouldn't be Elena -- he needs to be with a woman or vampire or whatever who loves him for who he IS.

Great episode the bombshells keep coming!
Caroline and Tyler no longer buddies
the werewolves were very sneaky with their toys, wooden bullets
I could feel caroline's pain!!!!!!
Damon trying to be a better man
and the group hug ahhhhhhhhhhhh
What is Uncle John up to?

The Vampire Diaries is a good show. Although making Damon chase after his brothers girlfriend and crying/whining all the time is rather boring. Wow that guy cries alottttt and whines so much how he loves her. Get over it she is with your brother man! Get your own WOMAN. Sad thing is he only wants her because his true love Katherine doesn't want a whimpy crybaby. When you think about it, can you blame her.

1)hells no i dont trust him...who would hes helping Katherine duh!!!!
2)Not really kinda long and dramatic
3)well i mean they were MEANT to be together so yea
4)anyone eep notes on Damon's Favorite Qoutes....i DID!!!!!
Overall, great episode...cannot wait til next week to see them go to their "romantic" getaway!!!!

I sincerely want to see Jules heart ripped out. I cannot help myself, every episode is always awesome.

I didn't like this episode that much, I thought it was kinda boring. It didn't grab my attention. I wish Damon would stop crying over Elena, it's annoying. I felt bad for Caroline tho. I like nice Damon, but I want bad-ass Damon back. I hope Katherine gets out of the tomb soon, cause seeing her in the tomb all the time is getting boring. I hope next episode is more interesting.

1. No. John is kind I think in the end he will be trustworthy, but I really won't believe until after he has concretely proved it. I think Elena probably feels the same way.
2. Adorable, but kind of long. That sounds weird, but I thought they drew it out the teensiest bit too long. Very touching, though. Not Rose dying to Damon's dream touching, but still heart-warming.
3. Sort of the same stuff. I think Elena's gonna bust it with Stefan in the near future. Damon is kind of getting ready to be worthy of Elena (he is unwittingly taking the "Be worthy of your future lover" course, and that compelled news chick is gonna help him to do it).
4. Great ep! I liked 12 better, but I did like this one a lot. Before I didn't care two figs about the rest of the characters (I'm a BIG Delena fan!!!), but now I seriously care about Tyler and Caroline. I think Jules is gonna come around too.
