Glee Review: Winners Like Them

by at . Comments

I knew we were in for a solid Glee episode when it kicked off with a song ("Misery") and then instantly addressed a long-running beef I've had with one aspect of the show:

Why the heck does Blaine get every single Warbers solo?

From there, "Original Song" delivered one winning performance after another, focused on actual relationship and character developments and proved one indisputable fact: my goodness, Lea Michele can sing.

Regionals Performance

Rachel's "Get It Right" was the highlight of the hour, as it did a lot more than merely showcase Michele's pipes. It spoke to the evolution and struggle of this girl, someone who has gone from cute to irritating to the most obvious MVP candidate since Tom Brady.

I somehow doubt Mr. Bundchen broke down while accepting the trophy, however.

Elsewhere, Blaine and Kurt didn't preach to the audience in any way. They simply acted like two students falling for each other, as writers resisted the effort to just throw these two into a relationship from the outset. Such patience paid off in a kiss that viewers have been clamoring for and which felt completely earned.

And then a second kiss because, come on, it's Darren Criss!

On the Finn/Rachel/Quinn front, the latter was doing all she could to revisit her days as the school's queen bee, but you could tell she didn't really buy it. Her eyes welled up as she told Rachel off because Quinn is simply unsure of who she is. Without the prom crown and the head cheerleader outfit, how does she define herself? By being Finn's girlfriend, she thought, but not at the expense of a couple that is clearly meant to be.

I expect Finchel fans to soon be rejoicing when Quinn realizes she can no longer stand in the way.

One aspect of the episode felt forced and superfluous, however: the use of the Regionals judges. I'm typically all for some good Sarah Palin mockery, but it felt shoved in and out of place here, like producers lost a bet to Kathy Griffin and had to pay up via such a cameo.

Overall, this was the sort of episode that made me fall in love with Glee in the first place. Great acting, non-stop singing - a total of seven songs, not including such classics as "Trouty Mouth" and "Big Ass Heart" - and relationships that make you both laugh and cry.

With the show taking a few weeks off until April, this was the ideal way to go out. What did everyone else think?

I thought Quinn's speech to Rachel about their respective futures was actually pretty together. She didn't seem to have any illusions at all. Quinn and Finn will almost surely end up exactly as Quinn said ... and Rachel, right from the pilot episode, was always leaving. The only pro-Rachel protest one can make, and should, is that why should she have to be shut out now in her home town because someday she's leaving?

Appreciation of Rachel has grown episode by episode. That's been satisfying. Maybe it started with her being unanimously elected Glee club captain (when she says they're a glee club and should perform and the store owner asks what did you have in mind, everyone looks to Rachel). In Theatricality, they notice when she's absent and want to know where she is. In Funk, they want to march off to fight over her egging. I think really started to change in Duets and continued in Silly Love Songs and Rachel really became the central figure in Blame It On the Alcohol -- not just her party, but Brittany going to Rachel when she doesn't feel well. It's funny when she slips on the butter and Puck says, "It works!" but her MVP award was only the culmination of lots of episodes development.

Great great great episode!! Lot of songs but also drama, fun and storyline! Fav. episode of the season for me!!

What about Sue punching out the governor's wife? She has crossed so many lines and while she's one of the great counterpoints to the show, she'd be out of a job and possibly in prison for this one! They have got to address that in the next episode.

THE THING IS ... THAT LEA MICHELE IS ACTUALLY THE STAR OF GLEE AND THUS RACHEL BERRY IS THE STAR OF NEW DIRECTIONS, BESIDES ALL THE TIME THE GLEE CLUB COMPLAINS ABOUT RACHEL GETTING ALL THE SOLOS, AND FOR YOU AMBER AND NAYA HAVE BETTER VOICES, BUT TO BEING A STAR YOU DONT NEED THE BEST VOICE, YOU NEED THE RIGHT ATTITUDE BESIDES THERES BEEN A WHILE SINCE RACHEL DIDNT GET A WORTHY SOLO SO THIS WAS AWESOME.

Well-thats-too-bad

i pretty much love the lovely person with the ariel avatar (anna, i believe?) because i thought the same thing! darren has a better voice than chris and a better prescence about himself when he sings. chris' speaking and singing voice is so high pitched and nasally it's hard to sit through without wincing because all i want him to do is stfu. i don't mind if blaine gets all the solos or even if the warblers switch it up a little bit. but i definitely don't believe he should play second fiddle to chris colfer, it's not a fair fight. and am i the only one who find's lea's voice annoying too? yeah she can sing but i feel like if people are complaining that blaine gets all the solos, then they should be equally annoyed that rachel does too. imo naya and amber have better voices than lea but not even a third of the spotlight that she gets.

Whipped-by-damon

Absolutely loved the show, the original songs were amazing and man had we ever been waiting for that kiss!! Still hate the whole hypocrisy of Quinn and Finn´s relationship but have high hopes he'll see the light before it's over!

hey, i am a big Klaine fan and tbh, i loved this episode... i'm glad the writer did not rush their relationship from the start and i also loved Blaine's speech before the kiss! Just wondering, has anyone heard anything about what is next for Kurt and Blaine?? Just a question that i'm curious to know the answer of, can anyone help me out? :) :)

Sometimes I don't feel like we're The Warblers. I feel like we're Blaine and the Pips.
