Pretty Little Liars Season Finale Review: That Was It?!?

at . Comments

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" had a lot of exciting and thrilling scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Still, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed by the season finale. The show has made it a habit to give a few answers just to take them away again. Remember Spencer and the hotel room? Or how about the trophy incident? The same thing happened this week, even though the promos suggested some real revelations. A is always a hundred steps ahead of these girls and it’s getting a little ridiculous.

So, after months of speculation and hours of entertaining teenage angst, what do we know?

Well... Ian killed Allison and videotaped all the girls, including Jenna - and that’s about it. Everything else that happened this week just raised more questions. To be fair, some interesting information was revealed about Jenna, Ian, and newcomer Officer Garrett. HOWEVER, nothing was really resolved.

Ian’s dead, but then he’s really not. At the very least, this one loose end should have been tied up. Now Ian will haunt the series like a bad horror movie villain, never dying, and always ready to pop out from behind a dark corner to scare the girls. Just like Mike Myers or Jason. I think we have enough mysterious, hooded figures on the show.

The Jenna and Garrett thing also felt a little too convenient. We just met him a few episodes ago, but it turns it out he’s a major conspirator on Jenna’s behalf. Does he know what’s on the video that she desperately needs back? Does he know she was forcing Toby to have sex with her and lying about it? It definitely seems like the kind of information that would kill a relationship.

Luckily, he didn’t recover the flash drive, but then, who did? If Ian had it in his pocket, he could still have it or A might have taken it. See what I mean about all the new questions?

Other than Ian, Jenna revealed that her part in this mystery is really all about self-preservation. Her new version of the story of Ali’s visit made more sense given what we know about Ali, and her relationship with Garrett seems particularly useful for her needs. I’m guessing she’s has no real connection to Ian because Ian seemed to know A and neither she nor Garrett could have been in that bell tower. We’ll find out how the Jenna-Garrett angle plays out next season.

In other news, it was great to see Lucas come back as our hero. Disregarding Mona’s “generous” offer to transform into someone cooler, he picked up Caleb so that he and Hanna could resolve their problems. It's still sad that he can't be a romantic interest for her, but I was glad to see him again.

Emily’s moving to Texas for a year, which could prove detrimental to all of her relationships (both old and new) and make A’s harassment a little more difficult. The long distance probably won’t keep her out of danger, but we might get a little less Emily in the future, which is kind of a relief. Her plot lines have been kind of slow lately.

Aria’s little tantrum over Ezra’s ex showing up at the faculty mixer was just ridiculous. Just when she starts to act like a mature adult, she ruins it with petty jealousy. They were finally free to date openly (at least until her father finds out) and she had to create drama. It’s true that unexpectedly seeing your boyfriend’s ex is alarming, but her accusations were a little extreme.

This was an entertaining, although somewhat unsatisfying, finale to the show. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long for the new season (June!) and, hopefully, for some more answers.

What did you think of what we learned?

hm, i expected more from this.
this last episode seemed more like any other random episode, not like a season finale.
i'm glad we don't have to wait that long for the second season. ian and melissa freak me out. they are both creepy. i bet their child will become the next freddy krueger... poor lucas... i guess it's true: nice guys finish last. aria and ezra: what's with all the unnecessary drama? they always find something to get between them, maybe it would be better if they just broke up. this can't be healthy!

@toridawson that's my theory too! It's SO obvious! @Brian I really hope it was Toby, but it probably wasn't because that would be too obvious. I think it was Noel.

It's Noel Kahn not Nor Con. @itsme
The show is different its not Mona. @toridawson

Yeeeaaahh, Lucas is back :)
Too bad he's also bringing Caleb back into the picture. I wish Hanna will be so moved by Lucas gesture that she will finally start to see him in another light and she will send Caleb back to wherever and start hanging out with Lucas again...

@itsme: First, please refrain from mentioning anything about the books on this site. That just ruins the show for fans.
Secondly, producers have repeatedly said they are NOT just blindly following storylines from the novels.

NOW THAT THIS IS OUT OF THE WAY! I think Melissa killed Allison
1)She obviously lied about being at Hilton Head with Ian.
2)Ian didn't know how Allison died. he said the incorrect death. This would be a good storyline because Melissa(and Spencer & her family) still don't know that Ian and Spencer were involved. I think they think SPencer lied. Which means this could set up a great storyline for Spencer & Melissa. Spencer has been involved with TWO of Melissa's boyfriends....Yeah, Melissa definitely killed Allison and I can see her trying to kill Spencer. Some ppl will do anything for the man they love. As far who saved Spencer, I'll say it was probably Toby. It could somehow have been Garrett(he might have
gotten their before the girls) or it could have been Noel. Also another idea is, Ian could truly be dead. Which means that A might have just taken the body to screw with the girls. Spencer was sitting there in shock and awfully longtime and they kept flashing towards the body(i knew something
was up because they kept showing him hanging) so there is no way in hell he is still live(without being to unrealistic) But i think A is a guy. Anytime we see a body part of A whether running through the woods or even their gloved hand, it
looked like a guy.

It's me, you shouldn't give plot points away like that btw.
Also, they are not going to do the same A probably. It has
already been stated. The mystery won't be fun if they just
did the same A.

did nobody read the books? mona is a.

Seriously, this left us with more questions than answers XD First off, why 'A' or whoever, take Ian's body. To hide to make it seem like the girls are bigger liars then they are? That seems like a lot of effort. And Ian had a different story then Spencer about Ali's death so, obviously they was so much more that happened there. And I still believe Melissa has something to do with it because he did say that he was doing this 'because' he loved Melissa. The fact that Jenna had contact with Ian and Garret about this situation is bit complicating. Ian has creeped me out all along so the fact he was part of the "home movies" was just not surprising. Still creepy though.
Car crash. Caleb and Lucas? That's what they led us to believe but if so I really want to know what happened to them. Lucas is so sweet going to pick up Caleb because Hanna deserves to be happy. That's why I love him. So if it was them in the other car I will be upset lol. Ezria love triangle coming up. Great. Just when there was progress in the relationship, Aria got jealous once again. Honestly, I don't blame her. Given all the stuff that's happened finding that out would be just the tip of the iceberg. And I love the Toby&Spencer scene. It was the 'cute' part of the episode XD

i honestly thought that when Hannah was hit by the car awhile back was the end of seaosn 1 but i think they got picked up for more episodes. At least Ian dying and his body disappearing was part of the books!
