I was a complete newby to the story. I thought I was going to be watching some sort of historical English fiction! But the weird architecture, white walkers, and Dire Wolves made me realize it was completely fantasy.
I loved the show, but there were so many characters introduced in one hour that I had difficulty keeping up with their relationships to each other. I also had a little difficulty with understanding the English accents when conversations were spoken softly or muttered. I had to watch it twice to understand that the white haired prince was beaten by the current king Robert.
I was shocked to see the cute little boy get shoved out of the window. But this is HBO, so no holds barred. I will be watching again just to see the white haired princess kick her stupid brother to the curb. Even a newby like me can tell his days are numbered. My favorite actor is the fellow playing the “Imp”, but in fairness he had some clever lines.
I also enjoyed everything

I haven't read the books yet (not for lack of trying.. the waiting list at the library is forever long) However, I thought I really understood things. I got a the values and the story line fairly well, I think it's because of all the great actors, you get a bunch from facial expressions, like you said in your review.
