The Vampire Diaries Review: Here's to Deception ...

at . Comments

Leave it to The Vampire Diaries to deliver a terrific episode already filled with tension, emotion and intrigue, then kick it into another gear right before the credits roll.

It's almost as if the episode doesn't begin until around the 8:58 mark.

A week ago, Klaus manifested himself for the first time, possessing in the body of Alaric in the closing moments. Tonight, Elena ended "The Last Dance" with the requisite game-changer.

Theme of the week: How far would you go for someone you love?

Bonnie, apparently, will go the whole way and not think twice about it. While her "death" didn't stick this week, Ms. Bennett has no qualms about sacrificing herself.

The amazing thing is that the reverse is also true. Her desperate resurrection of Elijah shows that she'd rather put herself at greater risk than let Bonnie die killing Klaus.

Alaric / Klaus

While last week's episode, "Know Thy Enemy," threw so many new twists at us that it required considerable effort to make sense of it all, this one was more of a slow-builder.

For a half hour, we knew what was coming. Bonnie, Damon and Stefan were on the lookout, while Klaus, disguised as a lowly history teacher, was coming for Elena.

The only question was how, and whether the spell by his large witch friend Maddox would allow him to withstand Bonnie's powers and eliminate her as an obstacle.

This was his endgame this week, not torturing Katherine or revealing himself for Elena (although he did both). It was all about getting rid of Bonnie for Klalaric.

He accomplished that goal, too ... or so we thought.

Ultimately, and somewhat surprisingly, after a dramatic, spark-filled confrontation, she and Damon pulled a fast one on the oldest vampire in the history of time.

Klaus seemed to fall for this a little too easily, but I'll chalk that up to the limitations posed by taking over a human body and the desire not to push his luck.

[SIDE NOTE: Matt Davis was so awesome tonight. Nina Dobrev consistently does a great job portraying two characters, and it was fun seeing Matt try this out.]

Don't get me wrong, I almost bought that Bonnie kicked it, too. The battle wasn't quite epic enough for a girl with the power of 100 witches to go down in, though.

Plus, it's TVD. The rules change as we go, right?

It's somewhat unclear how Bonnie faking her death fits into the Salvatores master plan. Will she be more effective against him with the element of surprise later?

With Elijah now poised to rise again, will he join the team's bid to Kill Klaus? Or did Elena just allow a total wild card back into the mix when she removed the dagger?

We certainly know where one vampire's allegiances lie. The reveal of Damon's plot to dupe Klaus dovetailed with an emphatic, profound declaration to Elena.

Even his plan saved Bonnie this time, make no mistake, he said: "If it comes down to you and the witch again I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you."

Wow. His jealousy toward Stefan is always just beneath the surface, but these words - and those eyes - show his attraction to Elena is more palpable than ever.

How will it play out? Will Stelena remain intact throughout this season and beyond? Even amid all the mythology revealed in recent weeks, the romantic subplot lingers.

Overall, it was a strong episode with an eerie suspense surrounding Klaus and plenty of emotion as the characters reacted to forces influencing them and to each other.

A few other questions, thoughts and points worth mentioning:

  • Where did Klaus go? Pretty convenient for the death-staging plot that he peaced out so fast. Perhaps Kat's self-mutilation needed some supervision?
  • We've been promised deaths of three strong characters this spring. We've seen two in as many weeks now, but it's debatable if either counts!
  • The Mystic Falls mascot is the Timberwolf? Did we know that before? Speaking of athletic canines, when do you suppose Tyler will return?
  • While popularized much later by Tiffany and Pearl Jam, respectively, "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Last Kiss" were originally '60s hits.
  • Matt and Caroline: Not much to report in terms of plot, but great attire!
  • Damon has such great dance moves, doesn't he?
  • Nice AT&T plug, guys. Totally natural.

WOW, just WOW !!! this episode was TERRIFIC !! Indeed Matt did an amazing job !!! I was like "man, he's really awesome playing 2 characters at once" ! And well, Bonnie, she had me fooled...a bit. I was shaken even though I knew that something was up, I couldn't help it. Matt/Caro's mom... what the hell ! We can't fight Klaus and have a "civil war" at the same time loool ! Poor Kat, had t stab herself over, and over again ! I also have to say that, man, Bonnie/Jer are surely an awesome couple, but I can't help it when I see Bonnie/Damon, even though nothing will come out of it. So luved it when both Jer (to Bonnie) and Damon (to Elena) in a way expressed their true feelings. Now true, the fight wasn't epic but I think that this is probably coz Bonnie didn't have time to practice her new powers. Now perhaps she'll be more effective... About Damon/Stefan+Elena, it's definitely gonna take another turn. Damon with what he said to her clearly stated his intentions and to Stefan that well, he's not the fittest to be by her side... so as shown in the promo for next week... there's gonna be some fight !!!! All in all, just LOVED it !
P.S. : I also noticed the mascot !!! I think they said it before, in s1 when the coach died. So yeah, werewolf + that... deffo makes sense lol. AAAAND, the girls just looked SMASHING !!! I loved the dresses, and all ! wow !

ohh I loved this episode!! It was so good, it's he only show that consistently delivers top notch episodes! Will there be a round table? I don't know why this thing isn't letting me login with facebook, and I don't know how to access my account otherwise!

Why is Stefan telling all the truth annoying?!he promised her to be honest with her in the beginning os season 1 and he is honest with her for the whole 2 season (except the situation with Stefan drinking human's blood, but than he told her everything) and that's amazing because what we all really need to keep good relations with our beloved is honesty, without this there could be no true love, that's what I think.
And I do not really want Elena to choose between Damon or's a hard choise with someone's broken heart in the end so I think that wouldn't be right for Elena to have relations with one brother and than with another...smth is happening between Elena and Damon but I think she will always choose Stefan cause she told that so many times trough the whole show and I can't imagine that Elena is just lying to herself about her love for Stefan..maybe there will be smth like in Twilight?she will understand that she loves damon but will know that Stefan she loves more and Damon will find someone else...I think Damon really needs find another woman...Elena is kathrine for him...ectually she is kathrine he want's to be with...a beautiful angel he thought Kathrine was...I will repeat but I can't imagine Stefan dating with some other girl...
I think that Elena would have to make her choice in the end of this season...smth like Stefan will understand she has fillings for Damon and will tell her to make a choice and to have a talk with Damon...and tells her that he would wait for her for the whole night for example on the river coast...she will talk todamon telling him she loves him but Stefan is her destiny and she loves him more...and what she fills for Damon is smth more like a love for a good friend but he has to understand that she gave her heart to Stefan long time ago and he had never gaven it back to her...I think Damon understands that and he knows that Stefan and Elena belong together...that's what I would like to see in the show and I hope that would be smth like this)
And I do not really understand why are you telling that Damon protects Elena more than Stefan does...?!Stefan cares about Elena all the time and he always was trying to make her happy)
Love Stefan and Elena)

OMG! That scene with Elena! I was so mesmerized by his eyes! How does he do it!? We've got to give it to Damon, guys. He really is the only one who knows what he is doing under pressure. Stefan is just like a babysitter to Elena. LOL. I loved that he rubbed it in Stefan's face- how he is the one who keeps Elena alive at the end of the day. OMG DAMON. Plus, those dance moves! OMG OMG! TVD is really amazing. I love the episode. Didn't expect Elena to pull out that dagger. I LOVE TVD! WOOOHOOOO!

xoxok at first I thougth so too, but it wasn't katherine who pulled the dagger out, now that elena owns the house she can't enter without her pemission!

the one who pulled out the dagger from Elija ISN'T ELENA! She's KATHERINE!!!! Am I the only one who saw this? C'mon! The way she twirled the dagger was so KATHERINE!!!!!

This episode was great.
the only thing was I thought Damon was drunk or compelled (since everyone seem to be in this ep.) He was acting really wierd, but I'm glad he kept Stefan & Elena in the dark about the whole Bonnie thing... I mean Stefan is ALWAYS telling Elena EVERYTHING! & it gets kinda annoying specially if it puts Elena in danger. In the end I loved Damon and how he told Stefan in his own way how HE would be the one to keep Elena safe. :) True love right there!

I was so HAPPY when I thought Bonnie was dead, and sad because Elena and Jeremy were. But I think I can live with her being alive and well. What I'm not OK with though is all of these magic trics that Bonnie uses and that they never explain. How could she survive? Was her death all fake? Did she just pretend that the magic hurt her? I'm really confused and annoyed that they never explain anything about the magic and Bonnie's different spells. But if I ignore what I mentioned above this episode was just AWESOME!!! I especially loved that last scene with Damon/Elena and that Elijah is coming back!

I really enjoy this show and so do my friends. Just started watching and went and rented the dvd season 1. The Stefan and Elena character are so sweet and have such an incredibly touching love story. The older brother Damon was more of a like able character in season 1 when he seemed like a badboy who played with everyone whether for food or pleasure. LOL The hunter Alaric is so funny and tough. Great show.

I love Damon!! Damon and Elena he's so awesome!!
