Grey's Anatomy Review: "I Will Survive"

at . Comments

Don’t you love Thursday nights?!

I’m biting my bottom lip now trying to simply review last night’s absolutely incredible episode, "I Will Survive," and desperately trying not to comment just yet on the previews for next week’s Grey's Anatomy season finale.

Honestly, I can't wait to see the repercussions from yet another strong installment. Now, let’s talk about the perfectly delivered, emotionally-packed performance by our favorite doctors.

Derek With a Baby
Adopting a Baby?

First off, I really liked the fact that Calzona was not the main focus this week. Without them in the limelight, we were able to see the competition for chief resident at its best.

Not surprisingly, Alex told on Meredith about her messing with the Alzheimer’s trial. I just knew he would though. I doubt that Meredith will lose her job or McDreamy, but she will certainly be facing severe consequences. Rightfully so, though.

Then again, let’s not forget about what Izzie did and how she was only put on probation.

While I found it slightly annoying that Cristina didn’t follow protocol and tried to hijack a patient without even trying to talk to Teddy, I appreciated the new friendship between both April and Cristina.

It made complete sense when April explained that she always follows protocols because of the incident when she was fired for killing a patient due to missing a simple step.

April’s grown on me over this past season, but I still don’t want her to be chief resident. I can truthfully say that I have no idea who should be chosen now.

Moreover, Owen was right. Cristina isn’t meant to be chief resident. She’s meant to be a surgeon.

As for Alex, I was happy to see that Lucy was back. However, it was unfortunate that it took him too long to realize just maybe his career shouldn’t come before a shot at love. I can’t say that I saw it coming that she would be the one to take the clinic job in Africa.

I, for one, liked Lucy and Alex together. With her out of the picture and his betrayal to Meredith, I wonder how Alex will react. Will what he did to Meredith affect their friendship?

Charlie's Angel
Definitely in the Running

While Avery backed out of Chief Webber’s diabetes study for noble reasons, I realized that I almost forgot that he was a surgeon. After all, we haven’t seen him in the OR lately.

I found it a little strange that Callie was back to work already, but it’s great to see her happy with her “crack baby”. Plus, how amazing was Mark with baby Sophia?

As a Mark and Lexie fan, I loved all of their scenes together. Their chemistry is undeniable, and they just need to be together. Although there are so many issues for these two, it was completely obvious how much they missed and needed each other.

I also loved the MerDer and Zola scenes. As expected, Meredith was nervous about her interview with the social worker. I certainly liked how she admitted she didn’t know much about being a good mother, but she was willing to do whatever it takes to be a good mom.

I’m wistfully hoping that Derek forgives her for jeopardizing the Alzheimer’s trial sooner than later, and that things work out for them with baby Zola.

Meanwhile, I can’t say that I’ve been fully invested in Teddy and Andrew Perkins or even Henry, but I do wonder if Teddy will really move to Germany.

Overall, I thought this was an excellent episode and am especially excited about the upcoming season finale. What did you think of “I Will Survive”?

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

I don't get why people are taking Alex out of the chief resident competition. Regardless of any Meredith issues or friendship betrayals, he's still the one who deserves the most. The way he grew as a doctor, helping and CARING about his patients on these last seasons... Jus wow. So yeah, I do think he deserves the job. I do.

Does anyone else remember that April was the one who screwed up and did something to lead to Gary Clark wife's death? So, techinically, she killed two people and will probably get Chief Resident. And if MerDer break up I will be in a deep depression all summer...

That bed doesn't have a headboard that's Alex's room!
Why would Derek take a headboard with him if he was moving out of there?
About the chief resident i'm beting on either Alex or April because after what Mer did i don't think she'll make it...
Mark and Lexie together please! I'm getting a little sick of Jackson hogging Lexie.

Based on the preview, I don't believe it is Derrick that moves out. The bed shown looked like a single, but, cut and edit is a magic thing.
Maybe when SR said they'd stay together, she meant it. Couples can have rough patches and fights and silent treatments but still make it through.
I hope Cristina and Owen stay together, he's one of the only male characters I actually like on this show.
I hope Teddy does go to Germany. Just when I started liking her, she's again being written in a way that I can't help but dislike her.
Alex, alex, alex.

Alex is a dick - no wonder his storylines always end badly for him. He got what he deserved.

I don't understand why Cristina needed to go to Teddy. She was on Owen's service that day so if she needed an attending to sign off, it would be Owen, not Teddy. Also Teddy is a cardiac surgeon and this wasn't a cardic case. And she knew Teddy isn't playing fair would bar her from the OR. Teddy needs to be gone two seasons ago. April is pedantic and inflexible. She would be an even worse CR than Cristina. Poor Alex. He needs to move on from blondes who stab him in the back. I feel sorry for Meredith. What she did wasn't that bad.

Well Shonda must be a sadist. Finally Mer and Der get married, and now he wants to be done with her?! I saw the promos and started to laugh, which was probably not the target response but come on, who doesn't love a good dose of irony. As soon as that commitment comes than he decides he's through? Ehhh. Poor Alex, so broken yet such a dick. Christina was amazing as always! Great episode.

Wow, Thw episode was great, but I hated what happend with Alex why do all seasons end badly for him? Season 1 he was punched out, in season 2 he had to take care of his girlfriend who left him ( and this was the happiest finale he ever had) in season 3 he lost the girl he may loved, in season 4 his girfrind tried to kill herself, in season 5 his wife's heart stopped beating, in season 6 he almost dies and can just survive with a lot of pain and now in season seven he has already lost his relationship, won't have a place to live, lost two jobs he wanted to other people and won't probaly have any friends since they all wilk stand at Mers side.
Just fantastic!!!

DOn't talk about how Alex did the right thing by calling out Meredith when we all know it was wrong how he got the money to pay for his little scheme. That was pretty terrible.

Just my opinion.... Teddy's going to get dumped when her new beau finds out she's married.
The clip for next week shows Derek gone after Mer was confronted about the trial. I don't see how that really changed anything, still..he's calling the kettle black when he tell her she "can't tell right from wrong" If he actually leaves her, i'll be ticked. And given the criteria for chief res, looks like Kepner is the only candidate they've got. No matter what, I'll stand beside GA like it's my BFF. :)

Grey's Anatomy Season 7 Episode 21 Quotes

Owen: I don't understand.
Cristina: It's two words - no sex.
Owen: I'm sure there should be more words.
Cristina: Look if you're going to choose chief resident, you have to be impartial.
Owen: Come on this - now?
Cristina: Sex with me, however hot and excellent, could cloud your judgment.

We've all heard the saying. It's one of those things you learn in seventh grade science class. Adapt or die. Adapting isn't easy though. You have to fight your competition and off their attacks. And sometimes, you have to kill. You do what you need to do to survive.
