I couldn't believe they killed Mike Franks off. You stated everyone guessed it would me Mike, but I didn't. He will be missed from the show. Who will Gibbs go to now? Killing off good character seem to be the norm lately on shows, I can't figure out why. This is one of the best shows ever on TV and I hope it run for a long time. What happened to Mike's daughter-in-law and child?
I am disappointed I will miss Mike Franks, he was a good character.

@Debra: as explained in the episode, swans sing (make a sighing noise) when they know they are about to die. Franks was visibly ill during the episode and I'm sure the writers wanted us to think he was terminal. So his "swan song" was picking a fight with the PTP killer, firing his gun, injuring the killer, and alerting Gibbs. He knew he was going to die soon, so why not go out with a bang?
I am wondering if the injury will make the killer limp and make him easier to catch....I admit I hated these 3 people who took over Gibbs' and the crew's duties...I need for Vance to explain more clearly who made that decision....After all, who is higher up than him in NCIS??? None of the other agencies are his boss...

I watched it when it aired and missed lots of details because of the way Franks' living person and ghost were woven into the story. Just watched it again on demand and I teared up. Truly one of my favorite characters on the show (they all are really even the ones who are no longer on). I think this is a terrible mistake on the part of the writers if this is the last we will see of this character. If it was the actor's choice (Actor Muse Watson is on Twitter and has his own website), then I respect it. But as much as one can feel a loss of a TV character, I FELT this one :(

@ Adam -- This is the definition of "supercilious".

haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, as a person or a facial expression.
So, what were you really trying to say about the previous 128 posts by people who actually do care about this program and the figments of some writer's imagination? (Now, THAT is supercilious.)

Talking about characters who are the figments of some writers' imaginations? Fascinating and surreal but then supercilious in the end.

Loved this episode. Hate to see Mike Franks go, so I hope they bring him back in "ghost' form for Gibbs to talk to. Mike was a great character, he will be missed! Can someone explain the swan story to me, I am confused. What was Ducky getting at? And why did Gibbs say perfect when Ducky said the swan doesn't sing when he dies...he doesn't make a sound. I've been trying to figure out the whole purpose of this story

I am thinking that Mike may very well be ill and he knew it. He came into Gibbs house coughing and we have always seen him in the show smoking. But, I thought maybe when he was out in the middle of the street in the rain and realized that P2P killer was there watching... maybe..just maybe Mike took him on thinking he could take him down to save Gibbs in the house from getting hurt? So, Mike stepped up and took one for his probie ? I like to think that was what Mike was thinking. Bless you Mike Franks. Ziva will not save Barrett as she is captured by the same P2P killer that Barrett didn't take down at the end of the scene. I think that either her two clown team mates recover from their wounds to run to her rescue or Gibbs and team save her. Not that I want her saved. I can't stand the sight of her stupid face! I want her gone fast, but not killed. I want to see her shamed by all her stupid mistakes and orders not taken and for Tony to turn on her, realizing she is responsible f

Swan Song was every bit as gritty and yet emotional as "Kill Ari," where Kate was killed, "Hiatus" where Gibbs resigns, and "Judgement Day," where Jenny was killed. It shows that while all of these agents are tough as nails professionals, they are after all human -- with human emotions. Decker's insurance policy is what Franks brought to Gibbs. I think we will find that Franks knew his time was near and he wanted to go out like Jenny, in a blaze of glory, rather than as a sickly invalid in a hospital bed. Kudos to the writers.

I think that NCIS is a great show!!! In the Swan Song, I think one of the reasons that the Team was so upset is that they know how much Gibbs loved and respected Mike. Part of what they are feeling is sadness for Gibbs, who they love like a father. They know that he is devistated and in pain over Mike's death. I have all of the DVD's from all 7 seasons and continue to watch and enjoy them. Each time that I watch an episode, I see something that I missed before. I hope that NCIS is on for a long, long time.

I'm not sure what to make of this episode. I wonder if it was Mr. Watson's choice to leave the show- otherwise it is a pity because he was so much fun as a crusty character who had schooled gibbs in being crusty, as well. It's high time to tie up P2P and I really really hope they DO tie it up and don't pull an end of season cliffhanger. Seriously, it gets old. I do not like EJ - the character and perhaps the actress is flat....not interesting at all. I'm thinking maybe one or two more seasons tops for NCIS. Gotta stop when it's still good, folks.

For all of the people who say it was not right to have Ziva show emotion and cry -- she's HUMAN after all and she looks to Gibbs and even Mike Franks as the fatherly figures she did not have in her life (although she would still be upset if something happened to her own father). She is still strong, but hey, isn't it better than they are showing a more caring side to her, not just a cold-hearted-robot (not that I ever thought that of her, but some comments are insinuating that). And yes, I, too, am a HUGE TIVA FAN. Get rid of EJ and the Big guy. Alimi Ballard from Numbers was good, but I have a feeling he was killed this past week. I agree with someone who wrote that Frank's gun probably ran out of bullets so EJ won't get shot (at least not at the beginning of the finale), &/or Tony or Ziva will save her.
By the way, this week's show was TERRIFIC!! I have a question tho: unless I missed something, I thought they implied that they knew the P2P killer and had probably seen h

@ Michael -- Thank you for the correction. Chris Pacci was killed while Kate was still there. This changes nothing regarding the death and devastation which have surrounded Ziva her entire life.
I do believe your zeal for pulling apart the posts of other people here causes you to entirely miss their point.

Swan Song was easily the best episode of season 8! Mark was fantastic! Aswell, the elevator scene showed the love between the team. I'm hoping its not going to be Jimmy Palmer who they kill off next week! And i'm a big Tiva fan so i hope that develops in the seasn finale! I'm not a fan of E.J but i think her team work well together so if she doesn't die, and is less involved from now on, i wouldn't mind. Emmy? I think its about time! I'm gutted that Jesse Stern has left the writing team, his episodes have been some of the best on the show.

@ Maka -- I don't agree that Ziva's emotional breakdown in the elevator was solely to do with the death of Mike Franks. I believe that it was the conclusion of a long series of losses suffered by her character over the course of a violent life, finally taking their toll on her new more open facade.
She lost her little sister when they were children. She lost her mother somewhere along the way. She was forced to kill her own brother. She lost her boyfriend when Tony killed him. She lost the co-worker who sat on the other side of her wall. (Sorry, I forget his name.)
She lost Jenny, in a way that was partly her own fault. She lost her faith in the righteousness of Mossad and her father's orders, due to the actions she was forced to take on that ship off Somalia. She witnessed the murder of an American serviceman by a Mossad operative.
She was taken prisoner by her target, and forced to witness what appeared to be the likely torture and murder of her two friends, Di

There's a difference between having and openly displaying emotions and breaking down into tears for a man you hardly know. Ziva's relationship with Franks prior to this point is knowing that he's Gibbs's old boss and partner and knowing that he's pretty cool for an old guy. That's ALL. There have been no heartfelt or non-superficial conversations between the two that would be in ANY way indicative of a closer platonic relationship.
But no, we have to show the girls as breaking down and crying inconsolably so Strong Manly Men McGee and DiNozzo can comfort them and aw-ain't-that-so-sweet. Abby I'd understand, her being a noncombatant and all. But Ziva? Please, that's completely out of character.
It would have made more sense for Tony to have been the one who went through the breakdown. He's been around for longer and knew Gibbs for longer, so if there was anybody who would have known Franks as a person rather than "Gibbs's Old Boss", it would have
