Start planning your going away party, Grey's Anatomy viewers: Patrick Dempsey will exit the show after next season.

With just one year remaining on his contract, the actor made his intentions clear in an interview with the latest issue of Italian Vanity Fair. He told the magazine:

“It’s gonna be my last. I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done," adding that the decision is “bittersweet because it’s been great and a great part of my life. But I can’t see me doing it anymore.”

Shonda Rimes has been preparing to bid farewell to both Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo after season eight, though the latter is yet to give official notification.

At least the creator now has time to plan our an official goodbye for Derek. What do you think? Does this guarantee Meredith leaves with him? Sound off now and react to Dempsey's announcement...

So then I guess Lexie will be the Grey in Grey's Anatomy? Because last I checked, it wasn't called Yang's Anatomy or Torres' Anatomy. Although Karev's Anatomy would be a show I would watch.....Sloan's Anatomy.....Avery's Anatomy..... C'mon, people. Any of those three are better looking than Dempsey. I won't really miss him much. And yes, I hope Meredith goes with him, but only because I can't stand the idea of them splitting up. Point is, I love this show and will watch even when McDreamy's gone. There's still Jesse Williams' gorgeous eyes...

If Mer and Der get a divorce, will it be on a post it????

at jr,.you have a point..but in d 1st place whatever reason why PD leaves the show unless the management will do somethng for MERDER in GREYS is not a goodsign for all avid hoping it end up very well..

Please don't split please dont split...

I don't think I will continue to watch the show if Mer or McDreamy leave it.

I'm not sure how I can be as addicted to the show as I am now and always have been, without Mer/Der. They'd have to really come up with some good replacements. I can't STAND the Callie stories so I hope they don't rely on that.

@katiej: YAWN....

No greys without Mcdreamy and Mer!

Aries93 um, no, i don't. like i said, this isn't the grey's anatomy appreciation show. i'm dissatisfied with grey's anatomy at the moment. thus, i'm going to say it. it's not about loyalty; it's not a family member. if it gets better i'm happy to say so. but at the moment i don't like it. and i am allowed to say that without getting my head bitten off by an avid fan who loves it no matter what. i think they're trying to do too much with too many characters, and have found the THREE child storylines a little much. you disagree; that's fine, doesn't mean i can't say it

If he leaves i really hope mer goes with him, but i bet in true grey's style there will be lots of drama and a true "will they? won't they?" series. i reckon they'll split and reconcile in an airport and fly off into the sunset

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Lexie: [narrating] Grief may be a thing we all have in common, but it looks different on everyone.
Mark: It isn't just death we have to grieve. It's life. It's loss. It's change.
Alex: And when we wonder why it has to suck so much sometimes, has to hurt so bad. The thing we gotta try to remember is that it can turn on a dime.
Izzie: That's how you stay alive. When it hurts so much you can't breathe, that's how you survive.
Derek: By remembering that one day, somehow, impossibly, you won't feel this way. It won't hurt this much.
Bailey: Grief comes in its own time for everyone, in its own way.
Owen: So the best we can do, the best anyone can do, is try for honesty.
Meredith: The really crappy thing, the very worst part of grief is that you can't control it.
Arizona: The best we can do is try to let ourselves feel it when it comes.
Callie: And let it go when we can.
Meredith: The very worst part is that the minute you think you're past it, it starts all over again.
Cristina: And always, every time, it takes your breath away.
Meredith: There are five stages of grief. They look different on all of us, but there are always five.
Alex: Denial.
Derek: Anger.
Bailey: Bargaining.
Lexie: Depression.
Richard: Acceptance.
