South Park Review: "You're Getting Old"

at . Comments

Wow. Normally, I like to wait until the following morning to post my reviews, but this week's South Park left me with the desire to share my take with fellow fans. Greetings, TV Fanatics!

Happy Birthday Stan!

Tonight was the South Park mid-season finale and, boy, did Matt Stone and Trey Parker know how to end things. All season, I've heard critics complaining that the two have lost interest in their show and would rather be working on their musical and other projects.

But seldom did it I believe it was true. Sure, this season has only been average, but there's been some decent episodes and some great ones over the last few weeks. So you could imagine I didn't believe Stone and Parker were done with their sitcom until the comedic geniuses expressed their opinions through Sharon and Randy's failed marriage.

"It's like the same story keeps happening every week, only it keeps getting more and more ridiculous."

Obviously, 15 seasons in, the guys are allowed to get sick of their show. But after giving me all these years of brilliant satires, where will I tune into to see fourth graders rip on the NCAA or medicinal marijuana?  Okay, before I spend anymore time lamenting the possible loss of my favorite series, it might be time to discuss this week's adventure, "You're Getting Old."

By now, all South Park fans have probably been able to identify with Stan's growing older at least once in their lives to appreciate the dubstep 'tween wave sounding like shit. Hopefully, you don't have the condition of being a cynical asshole, where even treasured Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey and Kevin James movies look like shit.

Meanwhile, as Sharon pointed out, there was the ever ridiculous Randy back to re-claim his youth. This time around he put down his World of Warcraft armor, and picked back up his guitar as Steamy Ray Vaughn. Pretty clever to see him trying to imitate the "shit" sound he heard in his head while listening to the kids' music as he played live.

The scene stealers, meanwhile, were the two little old men who analyzed the 'tween years and sought to save the breeches of Steamie Ray Vaughn and Nicks. Speaking of Steamie Nicks, let's hand back to the ending set to her lovely song, Landslide.

I'm not sure which was tougher, watching Sharon and Randy separate or watching Stan's innocence end. Or maybe it was watching Cartman and Kyle become friends. No, it was definitely just realizing that South Park was coming to an end.

Well, at least Parker and Stone are contractually obligated to give us seven more episodes. Suckers. But if tonight was any indication, at least they decided to shake things up for the last seven and won't just keep telling the same story over and over again.

For that and the lasting impact, I'm giving this episode the highest score of the season. And, personally, especially after this rambling review, I'm ready to welcome the end of this show's glorious era and can't wait to see where they'll take us. You?

Eric Hochberger is the programmer of TV Fanatic, so please forgive his mediocre writing. His programming is far better. Follow him on Twitter and/or email him. Just don't request threaded comments. They're coming.

The episode was touching, which is pretty much a first in I don't know how many episodes of southpark. After watching humancentipad, I thought it would be better to call it quits. Not because the last few seasons have been that bad, they were enjoyable, but they didn't have that same spark. I think matt and trey are getting older, too. They're probably not getting a kick out of the same toilet humor anymore, they've tackled too many subjects already. Its probably a good idea for them to express their ideas on another platform. One of the things about southpark is that it stays true to itself, I highly doubt they would 'do this for publicity' or 'throw us a curveball'.

dude, this is not about them ending the show. this is about you fuckin guys always complaining about South Park not being good anymore etc. Its funny that even now people think its about the "sender" and not the "receiver" of the show.. Pathetic whiners! its fricking funny what you turds are writing "Because of the way "South Park" episodes are written on the fly in the days leading up to each airing, it's entirely possible that the guys were just in a dark place this week, and that when they regroup for the back half of season 15, they'll feel re-energized." DUDE ITS NOT ABOUT THEM!!! they always make fun of celebrities.. why shouldn't they make fun of YOU???? you think you are safe? Grow up.. "Did "You're Getting Old" feel like a signpost towards the end of the series? And, if it winds up going away in the next year or so, are you ready to say goodbye?" OMFG .. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THEM ENDING THE FRICKIN SHOW.. ARE YOU ALWAYS REFLECTING BACK ON OTHERS IF ITS OBVIOUSLY THE FRACKING AUDIENCE OF THIS SHOW THAT IS TARGETED ????

Oh NOOOO! It cant end, its just cant. I love all episodes, I watch them when Im sad or bored, its always sheers me up. I have watched most episodes more than 3 or 4 times. Some fav episodes up to 10 times. Im a fan since first season 14 years ago(I cant belive its that long ago), Im a grown man now but this last episode made me very sad. This is too good to end this way.

NO SOUTH PARK IS NOT ENDING ANYONE WHO SAYS IT IS IS WRONG! I hope the Creaters see every comment in the world saying NO NEVER SOUTH PARK IS NOT ENDING! Plus If The WOrld is going to end South Park Is Like Hope For EVERYONE! Its true, funny, and AMAZING!! It WILLL NOT END! not yet....

This is exactly how it was for me when i turned 10 my life practicly fell apart :( But it didn't end so i hope this show won't either :)

No I Love South Park I don't want it to end! Maybe this is just for publicity! Maybe something big is going to happen it can't just end with this even with 7 episodes ahead :( I hope it's just a hoax....

I think you guys are missing the point. Or, at least the OP is. The point is that you shouldn't be a stan ("cynical asshole"). If you take things at face value, it's all shitty. Of course movies and TV are shitty, but if you look at things that way you're just a cynical asshole. You need a willful suspension of disbelief, and the attitude to just screw around and have fun. If you take things seriously, you become a stan, or later on you become a randy. Just get your head out of your ass... that's the message in my opinion.

Personally, I don't think this is the end, nor do I think anything will change. I think Parker and Stone are just messing with people's heads, and things will go back to normal as soon as October rolls around. :)

Oh c'mon guys, SP is not going to end, maybe Matt and Tray just wanna do that the people think that way. But don't you remember the brusque plot changes that have happened in a lot of chapters of this shew. I bet that nobody was expecting the ending of "Scott Tenorman must die", SP is very complicated, but seriously that show is not going to end up.

damm this will be hard but it will be better this way i dont want south park to end up like the Simpsons damm lucky i still have the daily show
