Alphas Review: "Catch and Release"

at . Comments

"Catch and Release" ended up posing more questions than it answered, but Summer Glau was back on my TV, so how can I complain?

While we knew about Red Flag and the goals they want to accomplish, I had forgotten about the government side and the personal gain they stand to inherit from the Alphas. It continued to force Rosen to choose sides. He has the unenviable job of trying to balance his team, governmental pressure and being the judge and jury to Alphas who may or may not be evil.

A Dangerous Alpha?

Everything finally collided with Glau’s character, Skylar. She seemed like a threat, being able to build the most advanced gadgets and weaponry on Earth, and she was answering to the mysterious “Z.”

Skylar opened up old wounds with Nina and Rosen. Nina was forced to decide just how much of a puppet she wanted to be rather than thinking for herself. How much will she follow Rosen and his advice? He clearly wasn’t too keen on Nina and Cameron going past flirtations nor was he happy about Nina running off with Skylar.

By the end, Skylar wasn’t the evil one and Rosen finally teetered to a side. Skylar was simply protecting her daughter, Zoey – a second generation Alpha – from the clutches of the DOD and the NSA. Rosen, meanwhile, decided to protect her and his team rather than following his government overlords to the letter.

That was a big step for the doctor. He has always been for what’s best for an Alpha, but he’s never had the gall to go against the government. He started realizing that some Alphas are better off “released” into the wild rather than stuck in a cell somewhere creating destruction or part of an organization that’s causing it.

Other thoughts:

  • The van is back. I’m pretty sure it’s an un-killable juggernaut at this point. I was happy to see it morph into a government SUV as the Alphas were driving after Skylar.
  • Gary’s taxi adventure was awesome.
  • Because Skylar made Gary a cell phone that had a direct line to her, I'll ask what everyone is thinking: when can Glau come back?

Jesus how i love gary! he's so eclectic, a unique person ,kinda reminds me of Sheldon on THE BIG BANG THEORY,THEY'RE OF A DIFFERENT LEAGUE TO THEMSELVES.

I echo the other comments. @RealDiehl, Skylar had special contact lenses. Maybe Skylar will be on Eureka or W13.

I have never been a fan of the series where Summer Glau has been seen, but I have seen several amazing performances by overlooking my girlfriend who is a big Whedon fan. I didn't even know that it was Summer Glau, but I loved the character and had to see who played her. Alphas as a series improved a lot with this episode; less bickering and a much more enjoyable Rosen. Now, I think I am not the only one to hope for Skylar to return. Of all secondary characters in the series, she is the one I would most want to see as a full-time member of the team if there will be a season 2. Thanks Summer, you are brilliant!

LOL! Gary's epic taxi ride was great. Who actually paid the belabored driver? How much of a tip is appropriate for an $800+ cab fare? What did Skylar say was the reason she was able to resist Nina's push? It's great to see the team working together more and more each ep. It's obvious Bill fears any child of his is going to end up being an Alpha. The fact that Cameron said his child was "normal" so far seemed encouraging. Skylar's child, Zoe exhibiting Alpha behavior must have had the opposite effect. Still, it was nice to see evidence that Bill is open to the idea of having a child. The show gets better with each episode.

Summer is amazing no matter the roll. She definitely gives me more reason to watch the show.

Kudos to Summer for another terrific performance. The ep itself was great. Great character development, background and side stories and cast performance. Alphas is on my list to watch regularly. Hope to see Skylar as a recurring character.

Alphas is getting better with every episode.
I loved the balance between the chase and the character development; at least 4 alphas from the team (Bill, Gary, Nina/Cameron) and also Dr Rosen have seen improvement of their characters on a personal or professional level.
Summer Glau played her character just right. She was perfectly cast for the role.
The way they ended it leads me to think she could return for another episode sometime in the future.
