Grey's Anatomy Spoiler: New Chief of Surgery Named!

at . Comments

There's a new Chief of Surgery running the show in Seattle.

April surprised many by winning the coveted role of chief resident this spring. Now, another big shakeup will depose Richard when Grey's Anatomy returns to ABC.

James Pickens, Jr., will remain a regular cast member on the show, but for the second time in as many years, the man known as the Chief will no longer be so.

So who will replace him this time?

He or she is “as surprised as anybody else about this" and also "nervous about it,” says the cast member in question, speaking on the set of the show.

Follow the jump to find out who it is ...

“He’s a man of action, really, and the head of trauma surgery - that’s what he knows. Suddenly, he’s in a more administrative position. I think the way he deals with that is going to be very interesting,” says Kevin McKidd of Owen's promotion.

Richard opts to step down “because of what’s happening with Adele [and her Alzheimer's] and what happened with Meredith” and Derek’s tainted drug trial.

But, according to McKidd, whereas Webber’s previous demotion was involuntary and met with animus toward Derek, he's “made his peace with it” here.

That doesn't mean it's going to be easy for Owen.

“People give him a hard time,” McKidd tells TV Line of his new role. “It’s not going to be easy for Owen being the chief in the aftermath of Richard Webber.”

The situation, clearly, is “complicated, because these doctors and surgeons have huge egos, and they don’t like administrative change,” McKidd says.

As an actor, however, he anticipates “a fun ride” as Owen “tries to really shake things up and bring things up to the 21st century in the hospital.”

How will Cristina react, personally and professionally, to her husband's change of status? Will this help or hurt Meredith's status at the hospital?

I'm soo happy for Owen Hunt who deserve this job, good for him!!
oh, I like to see Cristina plays a supportive chief's wife

@MJ_McBelle said it best. owen will do a decent job, but bailey is the right surgeon for the job.

Sorry, I don't buy Owen as Chief, never will, while I understand the Chiefs decision, the Chief is the Chief. Let's not forget Hunt is a newbie he hasn't earned the respect from the Doctors and Nurses. Very disappointed with this decision.

it would have been a good twist to bring Burke back into that position!!!

I'm happy for Owen and all, but I really hoped it was Bailey. I know that she hasn't been an attending as long as the others, but I just feel she would be a perfect Chief of Surgery.

I wanted it to be Bailey!
She's missing for the longest part of the episodes but whenever someone's in trouble she's the one who saves their asses!
She's short and badass!!!

owen will be a good leader but I think he rose through the ranks rather quickly as in his private life. he seems in every respect but I do not forget its past. one can deduce that Cristina will not keep her child and her relationship with Owen will be rushed. Meredith still has once again crossed the line by mixing the sustainability of clinical trials Derek. Owen is right to disapprove of the relationship between Meredith and Cristina. cristina should make their own personal choices and grow instead of following the guidelines of meredith.

Why would he make Bailey, Chef? She just got promoted to attending, that would not make sense. The hospital needs someone older and who has been around longer. I think Hunt will do a fantastic job...and I hope he puts mer in her place...I mean she has had so many screw ups, and she is still a doctor. What is that all about?

Honestly, I think Owen will be a good chief but I also hope it pushes him out of the spot light. I hope Derek and Meredith figure out their relationship. I mean no offense to Owen but he has been a jerk to Meredith and is not the most supportive individual. I think that is where Derek made a better chief, but I hope either way that Derek and Meredith are still together at the end of the season, even if it is the last season.

Good for Owen. Now, here's the should be Bailey. But remember back in Season 3 when the Chief was stepping down because he wants to spend more time with Adele? And the position is between Derek, Burke, Mark and Addison? Remember how the Chief told Bailey that she would be Chief but someone has to do it first because she was still resident then and now that she's an attending? Owen and the others are still ahead of her when it comes to being an attending. Anyway, I think he'll be good at it. It can't be Derek again. Not Mark. Not Callie 'cause she didn't do so well when she was Chief Resident. Can't be Teddy or Arizona either, pretty new. So it's Owen, he did decide who the new Chief Resident is. I don't like his choice but I think he would be great. As for Cristina, he kicked her out. And maybe she'll like having him in charge. Nepotism and all that. Can't wait for the new season. I hope the show doesn't do an ER thing. Oh and Lexie can't be the Grey in Grey's Anatomy. She won't hack it. Owen does surgery but he's not obsessed with surgery...not like Cristina so administrative work shouldn't be too bad for him.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
