Pretty Little Liars Round Table: "Touched by an 'A'-ngel"

at . Comments

Welcome to the latest edition of the Pretty Little Liars Round Table.

In this installment, Editor-in-Chief Matt Richenthal breaks down developments from the latest episode - Emily's torment, Hanna's new nemesis and more - along with staff members Carissa Pavlica and Teresa Lopez. Come join us, won't you?

What was your favorite scene?
Matt: Aria sorting through Ali's memory box. It's nice to stop for a moment and remember a close friend of the Liars is dead. The only emotion running rampant shouldn't be fear.

Carissa: Poor Hanna telling the world exactly what she thought about Kate and her obnoxious family at the stables. I'm sick of our Liars being pushed around. I want Kate to go DOWN.

Teresa: Agreed. Watching Hanna get caught in full on bitch-mode was pretty satisfying, especially when it was followed up by the equally bitchy phone call from her soon-to-be stepsister. I like the way the show is setting up the future step-family drama.

What did the N.A.T. club actually do?
Matt: Not much. Members spent most of their time at the library, looking through Latin dictionaries for the most confusing club name. I think mea navis aƫricumbens anguillis abundat was the second choice. (Look it up, readers.)

Carissa: This is like a quiz as to whether or not I was paying close enough attention, and I refuse to answer on the grounds that I may incriminate myself. Tossing acronyms around. What is this? CIA interrogation?!?

Teresa: I'm betting they filmed all the young girls in town and made money off the videos on the internet. Or something equally sketchy.

More useless character: Mike or Dr. Sullivan?
Matt: Dr. Sullivan, no doubt. Mike gives his parents something to be concerned over at least. Sully (she hates being called that!) is just around to make us believe there's a responsible adult in town. But we know better.

Carissa: Mike. They should have put him up for adoption. If he walked up to me on the street, I wouldn't recognize him, nor would I care to. Aria should have been an only child.

Teresa: Well, Mike is supposed to teach us a very important lesson about the dangers of teenage depression (at least that's where this character arc seems to be heading). HOWEVER, he's not very relevant to the show's primary mystery. Sullivan might actually turn out to be useful, once Emily finally loses it.

Is Emily overreacting?
Matt: Totally. She was eating Alpha-Bits, right? So one box happened to be full of As. Big deal. I'd only be concerned if they showed up in a bowl of Special K.

Carissa: Heck no! Getting a massage is daring enough. Knowing A's hands were on your back? Good God! She should have seen shoes, however, and known whether it was a man or a woman. She should have been astute enough to come out of it with at least one clue!

Teresa: Nope. Not one bit. It feels like A is picking on her more than any of the other girls. Hanna was hit by car, but only because she was too close to the truth. Emily's life and career are in serious danger.

What are Aria and Ezra's survival odds this week?
Matt: On a scale of 1-10? Let's go with 8. Ezra actually took a positive step here. The odds of him ending up in jail for sleeping with an underage former student, though? Not nearly as high, unfortunately.

Carissa: If I were writing the show, they would be zero. The pedophilia in Rosewood is running rampant. From teachers to the police, authority is being abused. When Aria's mom said "I would be disappointed," I thought... that's all?? A teacher is having an affair with a student and you'd be disappointed?!?!? Might as well pick one out of the bunch for yourself, Ella, if you'll only be disappointed in yourself.

Teresa: Much better than last week, especially when Ezra showed up to "save" Aria and really fight for their relationship. Although they do need to wake up to the reality of their situation. It's not okay for high school teachers to date their students and if anyone finds out, there could be trouble.

I don't care for the Ezra/Aria relationship. It's just weird to me. Plus, Ezra is just SO boring. I think the problem is that he doesn't have a storyline outside of just being Aria's love interest. Their relationship seems doomed anyway. Like Aria said, there are too many outside forces going against them. And am I the only one who finds it totally unrealistic that they haven't had sex yet? I mean, come on now.

you know what everyone has their own opinions on the ezria relationship. i personally love it because it is forbidden. Also some of you are fogetting that they hooked up BEFORE she founf out he was her teacher. So he wasnt abusing his power in any way at all. Even afterwards when she found out he was a teacher they stopped for a bit. The fact that the realtionship started BEFORE is a valid point.
Also my hovercraft has eels? lol

....among adults, most teens arent influenced by tv shows and movies the way people think we are. I think every teenager who shows up on comments can agree with this, or at least most of them. I can only speak for myself and my friends when i say: give us a lot more credit than that. We arent as shallow as you think who does what fictional, tv characters do. Besides, i dont think they glamourize it like you say NADIA. They have show the baggage and dissappoint that comes along with it, i think what they have shown so far, in terms of problems theyve faced and how they delt with them, have been realistic so far. the realisticism(is that a word?) you are searching for has never happened. As ive said before, and will say again, that part of their relationship is no longer a factor. So GET OVER IT.

Okay, so given that information that you gave, i cant argue against that. But take this into consideration: What if they didnt have sex while they were in that bed, which was a dream by the way. Since this is a popular show among teens, compared to the likes of shows like TVD, gossip girl, etc., i imagine the producers of the show would want to wait when considering to let thier most popular couple have sex and i think if they do have sex itwould be an elaborate love scene;something that would please the fans.If they are planning to do a love scene between the two, i think the producers would wait for her to be 17 , so They could avoid backlash from critics. @Nadia, let me school you on something. A couple of months ago, right before school ended, i did a 'Survey', if you will, amomg my peers and asked them if they would have a illicit relationship with any of their teachers. All of them, all 20, said no. I know its not 100 but it still says alot. Contrary to popular belief...

I appreciate that you guys seem to be the only blog or news site that continuously comments on what I think is a troubling relationship. Ezra was her teacher, and she was in HIGH SCHOOL. I think if this relationship happened in the real world people would be outraged and horrified. The teacher would be crucified because it is absolutely and completely the abuse of power (EVEN if she consented). If this happened in the real world, it would be all over the news and no one would think "awwww, true love." People would say the teacher was a creep who took advantage of the naivete of a young girl. Equally disconcerting is the way the show has made them the "epic love story" of the show, and any voice that raises concerns over the disturbing premise of their relationship is shouted down as being a "hater." The show has completely glorified this relationship and played up the "longing looks in the hallway" instead of the fact that the relationship was illegal. I taught college students as a TA starting when I was 23, and many of my students were seniors and were either 21 or 22. The thought of being in a relationship with one of them while they were my students is an absolutely horrifying, inappropriate, and disturbing thought. Technically it wouldn't have even been illegal - but it would have been wrong. The Ezra/Aria relationship IS illegal. Ezra is at least a college graduate, a teacher, and Aria is a young girl in high school. I cannot believe the show has glorified this relationship. I cannot believe the ONLY adult comment on this relationship so far has been "disappointment." I cannot believe that no one has point blank asked Marlene King about the premise of the relationship and what a terrible message it sends. At least in the books there was real backlash against the relationship when it came out and there were consequences. On the show, everyone acts like what they're doing is beautiful and romantic.

Just to be clear, everyone: No one is calling Ezra a pedophile. Some of us are speaking purely in a legal sense. Ezra and Aria did wake up in bed together last week and according to Section 261.5 of the California Penal Code:
(c) Any person who engages in an act of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor who is more than three years younger than the perpetrator is guilty of either a misdemeanor or a felony, and shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by imprisonment in the state prison. (d) Any person 21 years of age or older who engages in an act of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor who is under 16 years of age is guilty of either a misdemeanor or a felony, and shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by imprisonment in the state prison for two, three, or four years.

She doesnt have to be 18 to date him. In all sense, with her being a couple of months to 17 and he around 23, they are legally allowed to date, they just cant have sex until she reaches the correct legal age. He did not take advantage of her, and used for sexual gain or anything remotely close to that, so future commentors dont make it seem that way, you all saw the show and he DID NOT DO THAT. DONT MAKE HIM OUT TO BE A PEDOPHILE OR HEDOPHILE( I think thats the way its said).
You all know good and well he isnt either.

All I have to say is THANK YOU CORINNE! My point exactly. And also, if she slept with Jason IT WOULD STILL BE ILLEGAL because she's underage and he's not. People can't try playing that card with Ezra, because it's the same thing with Jason. Just saying.

First I'd just like to clear something up, Pedophilia is a psyhosexual disorder in which an adult is sexually attracted to children who have not reached puberty, generally 13 or younger. So unless I've missed something Aria is not 13 or younger and has reached puberty; therefore, Ezra is not a pedophile, nor have I seen the like on the show thus far. Another thing everyone seems to have forgotten is that when Aria and Ezra first met he was not her teacher, they were interested in each other from the moment they met when age and his occupation weren't part of their reality. Not that their relationship is something to be condoned, but really, let's not make a mountain out of a mole hill.

@tyluv3: The law doesn't care if they are teacher/student. It's a matter of whether or not Aria is 18.
