The Lying Game Review: "Being Sutton"

at . Comments

There is only so much a girl can pretend to be her long lost twin before it becomes overwhelming and, on "Being Sutton," we learned that the further Emma got immersed into Sutton's world, the more difficult it became to keep up the charade. Good thing she has Ethan.

We're starting to unravel a few of the many mysteries this show has to offer. Laurel was pretty easy to read from the get-go, but Char and Mads were a little harder to crack. They say you can tell a lot about people by who their friends are... so what can we now discern from this group of secretive best friends?

Dipping Emma

For starters, they all have crazy ass parents. We knew from the pilot that Char's mother had issues and was a struggling alcoholic, nothing that uncommon or startling. This week, we saw - via Char's fear in telling her that she was cut from the recital - how much more there is below the surface.

Char is obviously a perfectionist who is afraid to disappoint her mother, but it's in a way that is almost disturbing. Emma lashed out and stood up for Char, only to be applauded by Mads for having the balls to go up against her. Mads, on the other hand, has some serious Daddy issues.

Although Mads seems to have turned out a pretty well rounded and normal kid, her father has clearly got problems. Aside from the fact that he, too, has a problem with alcohol (what parent on teen drama doesn't have an alcohol problem these days?) he freaks out on Emma in an unnatural way. It's one thing to have an argument with your own kid, but it's entirely another to escalate from arguing to completely freaking the eff out on their best friend.

Which begs the question, what has Sutton done to infuriate this man so much? Just earlier in the episode he was kissing his goddaughter hello and acting jovial. I have a feeling we're about to learn a lot more about Mads' brother, Thayer. Especially now that we know Sutton is alive, safe and stay with him.

Let's not forget about sexy brooding bad boy Ethan, who is the only true ally Emma has. Dare I say there are sparks between these two?

Overall, I enjoyed learning more about Sutton's world, but the father-daughter dance was a little lacking. If you're going to do a big social event on a teen drama where the bad boy or loner punches someone out to defend the girl, then you gotta do it with a little more pizazz. For further cues, please refer to Ryan Atwood at the Deb ball on The OC and Dan Humphrey at the Wild Brunch on Gossip Girl. That said, I still see a lot of potential!

The show is promising but they need to improve the acting. It kinda look cheesy.
At first, I thought I'll like Sutton better. But Emma stands out more as a character.
I really will like to see they develop Laurel, Mads and Char more. And Nisha shouldn't get any more screen time. It's tiring to see her.
And I wonder what are the lying games. Obviously, it must has something to do with lie.

i haven't read the books yet, but i definitely don't like the show at all, esp the leading roles. they're not as good as the girls n guys in Pretty Little Liars. what a pity! i'm just totally in love with Aria/Ezra in PLL. what a great show with a group of great, beautiful and stylish young actors such as Lucy Hale, Ian Harding, Ashley, Shay, Troian etc... this show'd never be a hit series, guys. so stop acting like u care!

Rhianna speranzo

better than the first episode but still something is missing. I liked how Mads dad was Nathan from heroes lol

And as much as I love the PLL actresses I wouldn't say their performances are quality.

When does Ethan punch out Mad's father ? I clearly missed that because he's the one that gets punched! As for quality, it's the abc family, not amc.

The Girl who plays Sutton is not that impressive at all.. she talks behaves almost the same as sutton or Emma. when we see Nina Dubrev in The Vampire Diaries as Katherine and Elena.. now that's true actress which makes us belive they're too different person. plus katherine has been in Bolgaria, olden times and now in modern times.. it was so different all together.. sutton and emma looks the same in performance.. ETHAN looks OLD, he doesn't look close to be 16 in school. C'mon give this guy a break he was in CW's 90210, in failed pilot BETWIXT. now CW dropped him so ABC Family picked him up as Bay's fling on Switched at Birth and now The lying Game. overrated!
I thought this show will be like Pretty Little liars, a good smart engaging plus good performances.. but till now m not very much satisfied though the Kristen prout and other girl are great in the show as Sutton's friends but Sutton..

So is the next epi going to be "Being Emma"? and focus more on Sutton? I'm tired of shows that are all about secrets of rich people.

i too would like to see more of Sutton and whats going on in LA. As for Emma and Ethan there certainly is somthing between them...but thats gonna get complicated! he is Emma's sisters boyfrnd/fling

Yeah, it would be better if it was a CW series. Ethan/Emma will be written together regardless if they have any chemistry. Pasdar is a good actor. It's good that there's several threads being woven. I want to see more Sutton.

I love this show so far. I can't wait to see what all the "lying games" were
