Gossip Girl Round Table: Season Five Premiere

at . Comments

Welcome to the first TV Fanatic Gossip Girl Round Table of the season! Below, our panel breaks down the previous night's episode (see our review from earlier this morning) from all angles.

Below, TVF shot-caller Eric Hochberger (a.k.a. Gossip Guy) and editor Steve Marsi (Mister Meester) are joined by staff writers Courtney Morrison, Christina Tran and Leigh Raines to discuss "Yes, Then Zero."

Weigh in with your take on the following topics after reading ours!

What was your favorite quote from the episode?

Courtney: "People like me don't write books, they're written about." Absolute perfection by Chuck Bass.

Christina: Chuck: "Serena, you accepted responsibility without hesitation for maybe the first time in your life. And Nate, you had more fun not being you than you've ever had actually being you. Which means you now know you need to change." Dead on. Finally, a bit of realism on Gossip Girl.

Leigh: Marshall to Chuck: "Who are you?" Serena and Nate: "He's Chuck Bass." Had to go with the classic on this one.

Steve: Courtney and Eric's choice was clearly the best, but to mix it up, I'll go with Nate's musings on weed and life. I love being reminded of what a stoner he is at heart.

Eric: "People like me don't write books, they're written about." Glad the "yes man" Chuck is still a cocky bastard.

What did you like and dislike most about the premiere?

Courtney: I liked that everyone seemed to be having fun again, a back to basics premiere showing why we all fell in love with this show in the first place. Blair was on her game, Serena looked pretty, Chuck was being hot... felt like old times. I am loving the Blair pregnancy storyline... hopefully they don't bail out of it in some way. There wasn't much I disliked... I don't see the need for Charlie/Ivy to come back and I am not so sold on the adult stories playing a huge part (looking at you, Elizabeth Hurley). Hopefully her arc works out better than Russell Thorpe's last season.

Christina: Sometimes a change of scenery can be nice. LA served as a great spot for Chuck, Nate and Serena to have a simpler than usual summer. I disliked that Blair seemed more whiny and irritating than usual.

Leigh: I loved seeing Nate, Serena, and Chuck hanging out and having some good old-fashioned fun. Unfortunately I still really dislike the Louis storyline. Blair is not her usual snarky, wonderful self around him.

Steve: I only had minor complaints, such as Marshall's lame plot to oust Serena and too much of Louis' mom. Other than that, it was a fun episode with a lot of heart and a major twist. Vintage Gossip Girl.

Eric: I loved the light-hearted feeling of the LA scenes. I disliked Chace Craword's terrible acting. Maybe it was because I haven't seen the show in months, but was he always this terrible and I was just distracted by his beauty?

Prince Louis: Boring and naive, or devoted and principled?

Courtney: Boring and naive. I want to like him, I really do. But I find myself hardly listening when he talks. He may be the sweetest guy, and he is even a prince... but that still holds no competition against Chuck Bass or even Dan Humphrey. Time for the Prince and his bossy mother to go.

Christina: How about utterly boring and naive? Prince Louis didn’t once question Dan why he would write a story about HIS fiancé.

Leigh: See above. Snoozefest.

Steve: Christina makes a great point above - On the heels of her liaison with Chuck last season, too. The fact that we're debating between THREE guys as the father of Baby Waldorf proves Louis' naivete.

Eric: Are we comparing him to the yacht-owning, building-jumping, motorcycle-riding Chuck? Then obviously boring and naive. But if we're comparing him to other princes, he's as exciting as Blair could ask for and seems ridiculously devoted to her. Shut up and take your fairytale ending, even if it is Monaco. Not everyone can be Kate Middleton and land England.

Hardest to believe: Serena showing actual work ethic, Dan's book getting published immediately and anonymously, or Nate having a moment of self-reflection?

Courtney: This is such a difficult choice because they are all so hard to believe! I'm going to take Serena showing actual work ethic because Dan has been published before and Nate is old enough he should be able to do some self-reflection. There's no way the UES princess would be that devoted to getting coffee.

Christina: Serena and work ethic just don’t belong in the same sentence. I’m so used to seeing Serena as the damsel in distress or chasing boys that it’s hard to believe she’d actually succumb to the working world.

Leigh: Nate doing anything besides attracting cougars.

Steve: Dan has an awfully easy time getting published by elite magazines, but at least that's been consistent from the show's inception. Ditto for Nate being a bit of a lost soul. Serena showing real ambition, not motivated by her love interest du jour? Or deterred by setbacks? Now that caught me off guard.

Eric: First off, I just finished reading The Help, and let me tell you, they love publishing anonymous books and those things catch like wildfire. That check will be first of many. Just watch out for those tempting chocolate cakes. Now, let's be honest, Nate having a moment of any kind of thinking, even if it is marijuana-induced, is beyond comprehensible. Can we please just get him to sit in the corner and stop talking?

Did you miss Jenny, Eric and Vanessa?

Courtney: Honestly... no. Jenny and Eric had been so MIA over the past season, I hardly noticed they were gone. The only reason I noticed Vanessa wasn't around was because no one was wearing any ridiculous outfits. These three haven't had a really good story since the beginning of the series, if at all (Vanessa...). No loss coming from me.

Christina: How about none of the above? Jenny always ruined everything, Eric is kind of boring, and I’m sure I don’t need to explain my reasoning for Vanessa.

Leigh: I don't really miss any of them. If I had to pick, I'd say Eric, but I like Connor Paolo over at Revenge.

Steve: Jenny always stirred up drama. Eric was (usually) the show's moral compass. Both played key roles, felt like family and will be missed. As for she-who-must-not-be-named, my colleague will handle that:

J: I think she just went a little heavy on the eye shadow and disappeared into the shadows. Not convinced she's gone.
E: Of course! But I know he's just on vacation in the Hamptons. Luckily we can still catch his adventures out there on Revenge. Not sure why they changed his name though. It's confusing.

Who is the father of Blair's baby?!

Courtney: Tough call. It can't be the Prince because that would just make to much sense since they are going to be getting married and all. Of course who wouldn't want it to be Chuck? Daddy Bass would be extremely hot. But I'm going with Humphrey. I'm thinking some things went on between these two that we haven't learned about yet. And hey, he probably is the most suited considering his short lived daddy to Georgina's kid.

Christina: I'm going with Chuck because I still believe in happy endings - even for our Upper Eastsiders.

Leigh: I'm gonna go with Chuck on this one. She took the pregnancy test before Monaco, and there was mention of how she and Louis spent all summer in bed. I think she knows it's Chuck's and had tons of sex with Louis to try and pass it off as his.

Steve: Dan, if only because that revelation would be the ultimate OMFG moment.

Eric: Dan. That guy is so potent even his kiss can impregnate a woman. Just ask G.

What do you think? Sound off in the comments!

Father of Blair's baby ? Chuck's, but Blair will marry Dan instead. OMFG ??!!, or what? Time for Louis to go. Sweet guy, but .... our Blair deserves better.

I actually liked this episode, it was better than several episodes of season 4. You need to read TV line or E! online, like some have said here the producer/writer guy (sorry, he's still needs to get in my good graces after all he pulled in seasons 3 and 4) said that the patternity was between Louis or Chuck. Besides, I don't get some Dan fans. After what happened with Milo you want Dan to be subjected yet again to a patternity issue? He suffered a lot with the Milo thing, he doesn't need more drama in that front, he's also going to have his hands full with his book. I agree with the person that defended Chace Crawford acting skills, seriously if the guy wasn't a good actor he couldn't play a ditzy guy so well. Like another website said, he has underrated comedic skills. I know the cougar thing seems repetitive but from the spoilers I've read during the last 3 months it is supposed to get more spicy in future episodes, so I prefer to wait for episode 5x2 before making a judgment about that storyline or Diana Payne. On a side note, nobody has ever mentioned on this site the surprising presence of Vanessa Williams, that was some secret GG had going on for this season, nobody ever mentioned anything during the summer. Her character's name is Jane and judging by a photo that a fan took 2 weeks ago of a script Leighton was holding, this Jane lady is going to continue interacting with Serena when S returns to NYC and she's going to be interested in turning Dan's book into a movie, which will imply DS interaction. The writer/producer guy also confirmed that both Blair and Dorota are pregnant, again you need to read E! and TV line. Thinking back, I have concluded that Dorota was afraid that Gossip Girl was going to out her pregnancy before she had a chance of telling herself the Waldorf ladies or at least Blair, that's why she was acting so misterious, not because she suspected Blair was pregnant but because she was trying to cover for herself. Btw the actress that plays Dorota totally lied in her TV interview when she denied Dorota was pregnant, good one! Another thing I need to say: Chuck would make a hot dad! Another thing I said in another article: Blair is in love of the fantasy of marrying a prince, not the man himself. I didn't paid attention to something Blair said to Dan in the loft scene when she was calling him off, now I read here that she told him something like how dare he try to ruin her farytale, I mean who talks like that? If you are marrying the guy because you love him you don't talk like that, she would have to had said something like "the man I love" or something like that. I didn't see a problem wiht Serena's behaviour, it was what people was claiming for last season, and now that you got it you are complaining? Come on, is the same story of how people treated Chuck and Blair's relationship in the first half of season 3, everybody wanted them dating and once they got it everybody started saying they were boring without the sexy sparks. Why people can't ever be satisfied?! For those who are wondering, Dan is skinny and with that haircut because Penn Badgley is filming the biopic of the rocker Jeff Buckley in NYC and the guy looked liked that. For those who don't liked Blair's haircut, it's an attempt to not show Leighton Meester real life haircut with bangs. I personally didn' see a problem with it. As for Jenny, Eric, Vanessa: I will respect Taylor Momsen's decision of quit acting, it saddens me because it would be so cool if Jenny would make an appearance in the series finale, but while I don't like all of Taylor's life choices I feel for her situation of have been a child actress that was not enjoying it. I will miss Eric because his view of things was insighful, good luck with the new show, break a leg and everything. Funny enough, Vanessa is creating avoc without being there, so she might get mentioned more in the future, I never had a problem with her excep with some of her stunts, will see what happens now without her. On that note I have no issue with Ivy so far but I do feel that until this moment her presence feels a little forced in the story, I though she would seek Serena to start some plan, but it looks like she was going to do the right thing and get away from this people and now for whatever reason she's not going to do that, I pitty her she had a boyfriend and a life going on and everything. Finally, can I say that many called Blair's pregnancy and many other bellited that and now they are nowhere in sight? Seriously it was very obvious after the Chuck/Blair/Dan promo of 2 weeks ago, yet the arguments continue. The same thing happens not with Roxane's Mesquida character (Louis's sister Beatrice) she's the one with the affair with the priest (Marc Menard) and everybody kept saying it was going to be Serena even after the spoilers saying a chef was going to be the new guy for Serena, now the Canadian promo confirms it's Beatrice, and yet the spoiler that the priest was going to be having an affair with a bridesmaid remains true because this Beatrice lady will be a bridesmaid as well as Serena, at least in the beginning. PS: the writers/producers said a few months ago the season would start with a box. Did I miss something, what was the box? It was the FEDEX envelope carrying the invitations? Was it the sandbox where Dan was playing softball? (that's another thing, it was softball not beisball and it was a writer's league). Was it something Serena was carrying? The box containing the necklace Louis gave Blair?

I think that the love between Chuck and Blair is like that of the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Though they want to forget they cannot for that it is impossible. Like in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind
Since you can erase a person of your mind but not of your life and they will find all the times
Like Chuck and Blair

i thought the premier was mostly BORING, especially the phoney serena and nate storyline. sleeping with an older woman, haven't we already been there? serena getting all of a sudden a job she's obviously not capable of.. the writers repeat themselves all the time! what's up with that royal wedding? why is blair even willing to marry him when she's rich enough on her own? i just don't get the appeal. why louis even wants to marry her? i feel absolutely no chemistry between them. the only possibly interesting storyline could be one of the trangle between chuck, blair and dan. let's see...

I'm sick of Blair's fantasy fairytales. I thought she grew out of that with the Lord. I don't want her to be pregnant, it's the lives of New York's elite, not New York's young mothers. I really want her to just have an abortion and get a new love interest. Maybe a love/hate situation? Like Dair but better. I want Chuck/Blair to be endgame don't get me wrong, but who doesn't like having a few twists along the way? It's too early for Baby Bass. And Oh God, don't make it Dan's! He used to IDOLIZE her BFF Serena... and he and her dated for over a year! She would be betraying her bestfriend.

I'd be a little annoyed if it was Dan's just for the fact that sex between them was never even mentioned so it would feel like it was just thrown in randomly.

I love the Chuck Bass quote and I am absolutely positive that the baby is Chuck's.

I don't buy that both Dorota and Blair are pregnant. Why does Dorota need to read What to Expect When Your Expecting? Didn't she read it whe she had her first kid? She is soooo covering for Blair after seeing the message on her phone. then again would Blair hide it in the pantry?

@Nina: Blair & Chuck have servants for that shit. lmao. As if we'd see that. @ GGI Rountable------what show are you watching? Even IF Dan & Blair slept together (shudder) it happened way earlier than 6 weeks. Plus, Safran's on record that it's b/w Louis & Chuck. STOP already with the false Dair hope.
& not sure where all the Nate hate is coming from. GD that boy is fine and Chace's acting is so much better than S1-2. Now that V is gone, you guys can't make Nate your new wipping post. That title MUST go to scratchy voice-has no business on this show-Ivy. HATE HER. Best part of the EP was seeing B, N & S in LA. Makes my Serenate shipping heart break that they aren't together. LOOK AT THEM!!! When they hugged Chuck?!!! "Too Close" Priceless! Worst part of this ep: IVY! And I miss Connor. But he is great on Revenge. That show is lucky to have him. Although it kind of threw me to see him hooking up with a girl!! LOL I think the Prince's character is supposed to be bland so that he'll contrast with Chuck. If he was that exciting, then Blair would be choosing between two too similar characters, imo. And Hugo's not a regular, so until he becomes one (not likely), then his days are numbered. And the entire thing just feels like a charade. So, my hope is that Chuck will bust up the royal wedding in some spectacular fashion (watch The Graduate...) :O

Uncle jackass

The thought had crossed my mind on what Chuck Bass would do if the baby was Prince Louis'? (unless Blair got an immaculate conception and Dan is the father Joseph?). A.) Keep the faith... DNA tests can be inaccurate.
B.) Who wouldn't want a Step Dad Chuck Bass that is more epic than Ben Hur?
C.) Revive the Lich King Bass?
D.) Use his time-traveller's wife powers to fix time!!

Gossip Girl Season 5 Episode 1 Quotes

Dan: It's Blair's Save the Date.
Rufus: You're not happy. You guys are still friends, right?
Dan: Yeah. Friends. I wonder if she invited Chuck.
Rufus: If he's anywhere that FedEx can reach.

Dan: Dad! What are you doing here? I thought you'd still be in London helping Jenny set up St. Martin's.
Rufus: She and Eric kicked me out when I didn't know who Sierra Burton was, so I came back here early and thought I'd spend some time with you.
