Gossip Girl Season 5 Spoilers: The New Serena, The Men of Blair Waldorf & More!

at . Comments

The fifth season of Gossip Girl premieres September 26.

After a lackluster, up-and-down fourth season that felt lacking for direction at times, that date cannot come fast enough. Executive producer Josh Safran recently previewed the new season - one he promoises will be "lighter, poppier, and a lot more fun."

Some excerpts from his interview with TV Line:

Leighton on GG Set

On Blair's royal wedding, a decadent affair in the making: “There’s the shower. There’s the dress. There’s photos. There’s seating charts. There’s cake tasting.”

“Planning a wedding, even a non-royal one, can be a pain. They are definitely feeling those pains, and the joys, that come both as a couple and independently.”

On the new, focused, driven Serena: “Serena is lost no more. She has taken the job that was offered to her at the end of last season, and we see just exactly how that has panned out for her ... Serena’s goals come very clearly into focus.”

On Vanessa's goodbye present of publishing Dan’s book: "A season-long arc will propel Dan into a new world for which he may not be ready ... his maturation process is going to be sped up, because this is not a decision that he made for himself ... it is very much like a bullet from a gun that somebody else fired.”

On what it means for Dair: “It affects things very much.”

On Dair's connection progressing: “We knew from Season 1 that we were going to have a connection that was surprising to both of them, and was based on a shared emotional life. That storyline, in whatever form, is continuing.”

On the future of Chuck and Blair: “We have not abandoned Chuck and Blair stories by any stretch of the imagination. But that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be Chair or Dair or Lair or whatever nickname people want to give that.”

Chace Crawford, Elizabeth Hurley

On Elizabeth Hurley's character: "Diana Payne will mean big things for Gossip Girl herself, as through her, the show will explore the role Gossip Girl plays in our world.”

"Business mogul Diana sees the potential in an untapped market of these young twentysomethings that she believes could be exploited better. She really takes it upon herself to avail herself of our cast and get them to come work for her.”

Spotted: Our favorite Upper East Siders scattered around the world for one sizzling summer. If you think Manhattan had enough secrets and scandals to keep me busy, just wait until you see the souvenirs our sexy socialites have brought back home with them. Looks like gossip is global as "Gossip Girl" returns for its hotly anticipated fifth season!
Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) has spent a fabulous summer with her fiancé, Prince Louis (guest star Hugo Becker), in her future kingdom of Monaco. But when Blair returns home from the holiday, this Princess-to-be will quickly learn that planning a royal wedding can be a royal pain. And the fallout from Blair and Chuck's (Ed Westwick) heartbreaking decision to let each other go isn't making life easier.
Meanwhile, Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) scored the perfect summer job in sunny Los Angeles, working for an A-list director. Being in California has clearly allowed Serena to discover a new sense of purpose, but will the return of her cousin Charlie (Kaylee DeFer), in actuality a struggling actress Aunt Carol paid to impersonate her daughter, threaten to ruin everything? Only time will tell.
Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) enjoyed a hedonistic summer trip around the globe but, when they stop in Los Angeles to visit Serena, things quickly spin out of control. Nate falls into bed with a sexy and mysterious older woman, Diana Payne (guest star Elizabeth Hurley), who has more in store for him than he knows. And a seemingly carefree Chuck is chasing down exotic adrenaline rushes that might put his life in real danger.
After a relaxing summer in the Hamptons, Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), has his whole world shattered when he discovers that Vanessa has gone behind his back and found an editor to anonymously publish his autobiographical novel, INSIDE. Dan's terrified of all his friends and family reading his critique of New York high society, but will he say no to the fame and fortune that comes with being a published author? It's anybody's guess. So watch out Upper East Siders, this season nobody's safe, and everybody's going to be sorry….XOXO Gossip Girl.

For the sake of the show, I kind of hope this I the last season. What else is there to show? Especially all the Serena scandal, I mean how much more trouble could she get in?? The show has propelled the cast's careers and they all probably prefer to be in movies. I'm so sick of Serena! And please, Dan and Blair??? That is one of the worst couple ever! Yes they have cute little Netflix dates, but honestly, ew! It's always been about Chuck and Blair and it still is. Yes, Blair has really matured into a young woman who's focus isn't just scheming and being queen B. Someone like Louis or Dan who seem to be the ultimate gentleman would be an absolute fit. But that part is still part of Blair and despite growing up, the scheming and dictating of taste is still what she's best at. Their roots will stick with them forever, and being part of the scandalous UES, they'll never be able to escape that. There is just too much Chair history to ignore. Plus Blair chose Chuck at the end, he just wanted her to deserve better. He knew he would never be able to provide her with peace and stability. Blair will get bored of the calm, boring life and will need her games.

give us Dair please!!

It wouldn't work with georgina as a main cause she's someone who just comes in with some big secret

@Reckless I strongly believe that this will be the final season. First of all, the actor's contracts are expiring and there have been certain someone's that have decided not to renew their contracts after season 5 (Leighton) and personally I will stop watching Gossip Girl anyway if they decide to go on without Leighton. Now, Reckless, you're right. That doesn't mean that Gossip Girl will cease to exist without Leighton. Nowhere does it say that this is the final season. Point taken.
My second reason I feel this way is because all of season 4 has been used to set up season 5. Lily is still on house arrest, Blair has met and become engaged to a prince, Chuck hit rock bottom, Dan has apparently been writing a tell-all novel about the ugly underbelly of the UES ever since episode 1, we now know what happened with Serena during her boarding school days and now she's becoming a movie star, someone's pregnant; the whole season left us with a bunch of loose ends that are apparently going to be tied into a pretty knot in season 5.
What more can happen now after season 5 that hasn't already been done before? Who could 1up a prince in Blair's love life? We already know she's always wanted to be a princess. She's getting MARRIED for Christ's sake! Blair's dating life is over. She's looking to get married. If she doesn't marry Louis, she'll marry Chuck (so so sorry Dair fans, but she's not going to marry Dan just cus they watch movies on Netflix together.) Or she'll marry Chuck because she's pregnant with Chucks baby. Without a love triangle there will be no Gossip Girl. UNLESS (and this is a big unless) the writers steer the show in another direction and make the show more about Serena again (like in season 1), then there is a chance the show can survive. And that's only if there are enough Serena fans out there to hold the show afloat.

@Reckless How does everyone KNOW Chair is endgame?
Was there a memo passed around??
You people are so F*cking presumptuous it makes me sick.
Yes, you might WANT them to be 'endgame' but you do not KNOW they will be 'endgame'.
Frankly, if I was a writer on this show I would make sure they're not just to teach you that you don't really KNOW shit!
Now, unless you are an actual GG writer don't come here and tell us you KNOW anything. Get it?!?

@reckless 100% agree this is going to be a great season an chuck an blair will get back together an I can't wait till that episode comes.:-)

@Heddy: it is not the finale season, what the hell are you talking about?? It is gonna be a great season, and well, maybe some of you won`t believe it, but everyone knows CHAIR is endgame!!!

SOMETIMES i pretend that Gossip Girl ended at its 2nd Season cuz honestly, I got bored with their storylines. I miss their "TRENDSETTING" looks and WTF happened to Chuck's sense of style & Blair's Hair and CONSERVATIVE clothes?! LIKE WTF?!?! the producers must remember that these characters are RICH PEOPLE and not just trying hard top label buyers. Before, we kept watching GG because of its scandalous moments that ACTUALLY MATTER like Serena's guilt when she felt she killed someone and Georgi coming out of nowhere to bring her past back, CHUCK AND BLAIR, and of course the lovely divide between the BROOKLYNITES and the UPPEREASTSIDERS. the last to seasons were a bust. ADMIT IT. im just hoping that this one will make up for the last to seasons that were a complete FAIL. I MISS GG SEASON 1 AND 2!!
Lets pray that season 5 will BE THE BEST SEASON EVVEEERR!!
oh please Lord! :)))

This interview actually makes me think positively about the upcoming season. It's good to see them looking at individual character development, rather than just making the whole show about the romances. I'm convinced that the reason there's so much bickering between fans of different pairings is that there hasn't been anything of interest in the show apart from musical beds shenanigans for quite some time. I also believe that this is the big reason why so many viewers have deserted the show, leaving mostly people who have a partisan interest. It'll be nice to see Gossip Girl making a substantive return and will be interesting to see how she can still be relevant to the lives of the characters now that they're away from Constance/St. Jude's. They've failed in this respect ever since S3, so hopefully they get it right this time. I'm looking forward to Dan's book storyline, which should hopefully re-cast his character as less of an insider. It would also be nice to see the show lightening up on the cheesy Twilight Schtick they've used around Chuck and Blair for the last two-three seasons.

And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell ... You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

[to Jenny] That's the thing. You need to be cool to be queen. Anne Boleyn thought only with her heart and she got her head chopped off. So her daughter Elizabeth made a vow never to marry a man. She married a country. Forget boys. Keep your eye on the prize, Jenny Humphrey. You can't make people love you, but you can make them fear you. For what it's worth, you're my Queen. I choose you.
