The Vampire Diaries Review: The Nick of Time

by at . Comments

I'm not sure who I feel worse for after watching "The End of the Affair." Elena, Caroline or Klaus?

Okay, it's definitely Elena. The man she loves and would chase to the end of the world has told her to leave him alone; her mere existence is all that stands between relative peace and an army of Hybrids; and viewers even learned that the only reason Stefan fell for her may have been because he was forced to forget the woman who could truly be his soulmate.

Still, we learned a lot about Klaus this week and the intel painted a picture of a tortured, lonely, scared Original who hasn't been killing merely for the sake of killing.

Stefan in Chicago

Klaus is petrified. He's been on the run for centuries. He's been under orders to create Hybrids and I'm guessing it's not for his own personal army. Does that excuse all of his murderous behavior? Of course not. But let's remember the state Damon was in when we first met him. And the past of Stefan that gets unraveled every week.

There's always context to even the most evil of actions and Klaus' appears to be centered around the mysterious man who showed up for a few seconds near the end of this episode, asking after Stefan's forgotten friends. Is he a vampire? Maybe. A werewolf... such as Klaus' biological father? I say yes.

One thing is for certain: Sebastian Roche (Supernatural, Fringe) is an actor familiar with the non-human.

I also take issue with how the show keeps upping the bad guy ante. There was Katherine... and then Klaus... and then now random new guy. Granted, each villain has brought with him or her a different angle; and we need new blood to keep spinning the story in various directions. But it's a bit irritating to continually learn that there's always someone else out there. Nothing ever gets resolved as much as the plot in general gets altered.

Have we finally met the true string puller? I doubt it.

Ripper Road Trip Pic

Let's return to Katherine for a moment: perpetual props to Nina Dobrev for expertly pulling off such contrasting characters, but I'm sick of this one. She's become more of a plot device than an actual person, showing up from time to to time because she serves the purpose of writers in some way. That was never more evident than it was here, as she randomly called Damon with full knowledge of Stefan's whereabouts just because... she's made a lot of contacts over the years? That's pretty thin, Vampire Diaries.

Figure out a direction for Katherine or kill her for good.

Those small frustrations aside, the flashbacks were as fun and engrossing as ever and they culminated in a fascinating new trio. Stefan remembers! Throughout the first few episodes of the season, it was difficult to believe he had returned to his full-on Ripper ways or truly wanted to be a sidekick to Klaus. But with these memories flowing through him now, with the knowledge that he really was close to Klaus and in love with Rebecca, we may truly see a different side to Stefan. His loyalties aren't so clear anymore.

Hence my original sympathy for Elena and hence my one-word reaction to this development: GULP.

Elsewhere, there's not really much to say about the Caroline storyline. It sucks that her father is anti-vampire and it's great that her mother has done a 180 on the subject. It's also nice to see her and Tyler grow so close. I'm assuming Liz's actions will cause a serious divide within the council, but that's for another day. For now, the focus was so squarely on Chicago that this B story felt almost like a Z story. It was rushed through, which is a shame considering it was actually the cliffhanger from a week ago.

Closing thoughts:

  • Have we ever gone an episode without seeing Elena waking up?
  • You want a partner in crime? Forget Stefan. I'm so much more fun. One of my favorite Damon lines in awhile, considering he said when he was near death.
  • When I'm done with him, he won't wanna go back. Seriously, what is Klaus' plan for Stefan?!?
  • I'd watch an entire series based around Klaus and Stefan's life in the 1920s. Call it The Real House-Originals of Chicago.

Stefan didnt fall in love with elena because he was compelled to forget Rebecca...he fell in love with Elena because HE FELL IN LOVE WITH ELENA. His love for her is far stronger than anything else, hence, he had to let her go in order to save her life. AGAIN.

@Pratik: Shows are rated on their own. They aren't compared to other shows on TV.
In other words: a 5.0 rating for VD means it's the absolute best possible episode that VD could ever air.
Make sense?

So Klaus and Stefan were buddies in the good old days. I didn't see that one coming. How cool is that? I have to say Nick is quickly becoming my second favourite character on this show :) and it's totally awesome that they called him Nick, btw. It's fun to see that he's actually capable of making friends. Feeling something at all, for that matter. Stefan was a loose end, but insted of just killing him, Kaus made him forget. And the look on his face when Rebecca chose Stefan - heartbreaking. (Seriously, what is it with girls always choosing Stefan over the other guy? It's getting old...). For the love of God, Elena! Just stop with this "I can't give up on you" stuff! If she wants to get herself killed, that's fine, but can she just think of other people for a second? Like Stefan? I dare say he's much safer doing what Klaus wants. What the hell is she thinking? That Stefan can just leave and Klaus would be ok with that? Last season she was willing to die because she learned the bloody story from Katherine. Has she lost her brain somewhere in between? Or maybe she could think about Damon for a second, after all the guy is risking his life for her. I swear, after her "I told you that I was practically discovered by Klaus and you're worried about what I'm wearing?", I wanted to slap her stupid face. Hard. Side note: Klaus, and by "Klaus" I mean "super-Original-invincible-hybrid-Klaus", didn't hear that someone alive and breathing was in the room, standing like three feet away from him? REALLY? "I also take issue with how the show keeps upping the bad guy ante. There was Katherine... and then Klaus... and then now random new guy. Granted, each villain has brought with him or her a different angle; and we need new blood to keep spinning the story in various directions. But it's a bit irritating to continually learn that there's always someone else out there. Nothing ever gets resolved as much as the plot in general gets altered." ----- Thanks for bringing that up, Matt. That is what I wrote im my comment last week! We've got ourselves a perfect villain (like Klaus in last season) and then they are taking that away from us. And making us feel stupid that we were scared of Klaus in the first place. Caroline and Tyler are still great, though the rescue mission was too much high-speed. Fortunately the scene with them in Caroline's room was rewarding.

Damonsucksmyworld

I don't think "The nameless vampire hunter" is Klaus' biological father. I think he's the Original father (Rebecca said Klaus has killed 'most of the Originals'). Since Klaus' real father is not the Original father, the nameless vampire hunter has a motive to kill Klaus if he is papa Original, since he's alleged son is really a bastard.

just like i said before, the writers r just looking for a way to link elena and damon,nw dat we knw stefan only fell for elena coz he was compelled to forget abt rebecca, wonder wat he's going to do nw,who he's going to chose btw them, and wat really suprised me is knwing dat stefan knw klaus since in 20's bt he didn't remember all of dat wen they were battling for breaking his curse,i wonder wat's going to happen btw stefan and elena, does dis mean it's over?can't tell for sure. But i tink wat really caused all of dis tins to stefan making him being klaus slave, reuniting with rebecca, back to his ripper ways was saving damon's life,if nt 4 dt,none of this would have happened,he wouldn't be away frm elena or be with rebecca again. There is surely a war ahead.

I have to say I mostly agree with this review. First of all I also love how Nina plays both characters that being said I do lately feel like Katherine’s character has become just a way for the writers to introduce new info etc and I would love to see her return to the character she used to be. And I totally agree on the always a worse bad guy, I had really hoped that Klaus would’ve been like the big villain of the season, I mean he’s supposed to be an invincible hybrid now and there was so much build-up to the “evil all-powerful invincible super original and now it’s just like… he’s another victim of something way stronger, it just really bugs me (and also the way that witch stopped him from killing Damon, I doubt Klaus would take that kinda crap or at least would have killed Damon later, but no he just let him go). An the new villain the guy might be a vampire but I think odds are he’s something different like “an original werewolf or something because it seems to have been established that Klaus was at least the most powerful vampire. But you know that might not even be true anymore I have to say due to this episode Klaus has been officially pussified I hope they can at least somehow “redeem him.
Then on the whole Klaus being friends with Stefan thing… I don’t know, I don’t really buy it. I mean Klaus is like more than 1000 years old and he’s met in that time hundreds upon thousands of people I doubt he’d be so easily taken in or that he could “learn anything from Stefan.
I also think that… I don’t know some of the things Damon and Stefan have said to one another and stuff, don’t make as much sense anymore due to this… shift in who’s the “evil brother. That or Stefan is like the BIGGEST hypocrite in the world >.<
Other than that I just wanna say love Caroline =D although I kinda miss her badassery in season 2 and Tyler has been officially redeemed in my eyes now and I’m looking forward to seeing how this could all impact the council and I hope they at least touch on it because I was kinda disappointed how in season 2 they made Damon head of the council and he just didn’t do anything with it. Oh and also I have to admit I kinda miss Lexi after this episode, she annoyed ripper Stefan soooo much =p.
And I am very excited for next week's ep.

I bet the mystery man at the end of the episode is in fact klaus biological father.the original werewolf who wants his bastard son killed. also it's never been established that werewolves on the vampire diaries can hear a human beings heartbeat, so I'm not going to knit pick on klaus not knowing elena was in the bedroom. hell I don't think we know much about werewolfs abilities on this show yet PERIOD.In the teen wolf series it was well documented (duh). tyler needs to open up and let us all know what exactly he can do, so we can naturally assume that klause can do it as well............. it's great to know that I wasn't the only one not missing jeremy and is dead ex girlfriends or matt with his chalkboard of a personality. I said this last week and I will say it again, bring back elijah now damn it. I think it's safe to say that he is my favorite character with klaus being second.

I like this review, except i hav to disagree on the Katherine front. I reli like her character, and would be livid if they killd her off. she is so cunning and coniving, that if she ever dies, er character would have been cheated as she is clearly so sly that she would outlive everyone. once again a great episode, seriously, how do the writers do it?
Liked the Caroline Tyler scenes. Also i liked how this episode had nothing to do with Jeremy and the ghosts, as we need somthing to keep the show going for the rest of the season.
