The Vampire Diaries Review: A Case of Jungle Fever

at . Comments

Is it possible for The Vampire Diaries to feature too much action?

I never thought I'd ask that question, either, but, in many ways, "The Hybrid" left me as confused as Caroline. No, my estranged, creature-hunting, formerly horn-rimmed-glasses-wearing father did not just walk through that door.

But the fast paced, dark developments in the woods have left me scratching my head a bit. I really hope I don't have a werewolf bite...

Damon v. Elena

Okay. So Klaus' grand goal has been to create a hybrid army. That much I follow. And this was the point of his sacrificial ceremony last season, right? But it failed to work here because - as we know, and as Klaus appears to now know - the Doppleganger is NOT actually dead... right?

Also: why can hybrids only be made out of werewolves? Those are apparently very difficult to track down, whereas vampires are abundant.

Is it because Klaus already possesses vampire blood and can just drip that into the werewolf's throat to complete the process? But then why not use a nearly-dead werewolf, such as Ray, to do the same thing for any number of vampires he and Stefan could easily track down?

These are all questions of practicality. I may simply be over-analyzing. I may be forgetting a plot point. But there is one overarching question from this storyline that the show definitely wants us to be thinking about:

Who told Klaus about making the army? Who is pulling the strings of the blood sucker we were previously told was the oldest, most powerful vampire alive? Might it be the individual Julie Plec has teased will steal Klaus' thunder later this season? There is some Wizard of Ooze out there, hiding behind some curtain, we can be certain of that. Fascinating.

Elsewhere: give it up for a battle between ghosts! I've been assuming all along that Anna and Vicki were back for the same purpose, whatever the heck that is. But the former says the latter cannot be trusted, which does jibe with Kayla Ewell teasing that her character is back for revenge. But against whom? Stefan killed her. The audience might not want Vicki to go after him, but why would Anna care? Why would she issue this warning to Jeremy?

And where does Matt fit into all this? He couldn't see Vicki in that scene, but she saw him. Or at least felt his presence. Matt is such a good guy, offering to assist Tyler with his chaining, let's hope he isn't in for more heartbreak somehow here. The guy has already lost his sister once, along with his girlfriend to his best friend, please tell me the show won't put him through even more.

You know, like having him kidnapped and tied up by a father whose family has been in the vampire-killing business for 150 years. I did not see that ending coming! (Editor's note: I never see any episode ending coming.) Where has this Bill guy been? He's clearly familiar with Tyler's mother and the counsel, yet he hasn't been mentioned once by them.

Other notes from the episode:

  • We can only assume Jeremy used Bing to educate himself on ghost summoning, right?
  • Careful to avoid the True Blood threesome trap, Vampire Diaries. I'm a big fan of Elena with Stefan, period. I get we need the longing glance with Damon, I understand there's an attraction there. But there's only so many times the show can focus on teasing these two as a couple before it gets more irritating than intriguing.
  • Aren't they more akin to brother and sister than lover and lover anyway? I got a fun sibling vibe from Elena and Damon when they bickered over leaving the woods, when he pushed her into the lake and when Damon burned his hand on those chains and Elena sighed: "I said Ric."
  • Katniss Everdeen would not have needed Stefan's help with Ray. She would have scaled a tree and shot arrows right through him. Just saying.
  • One thing was for sure this week: the gang wasn't bird watching!

Vampire blood makes you rise from the dead, werewolf blood doesnt.
He has to turn werewolfs because his blood can make them rise. If he fed his blood to a vamp then killed it it would stay dead.

loved this episode,it was kinda good all round, except for caroline...
but still!
klaus's plan is failing, stefan shows he kinda still cares,
damons going to help elena, alarics moving back in,
tylers mum wants to let caroline go, matt and jeremy are getting somewhere,
2 episodes without the annoying bonnie, and most of all...
elena is WAAYY falling in love with damonnn, the whole 'i worry about you' speech and the way damon held her head close to his...and her longing gaze into his eyes....he loves her so much it breaks my heart♥
I love those delena-in-elenas-bedroom moments♥
she is SO falling in love with damon♥

I loved this episode. I love how because Elena is still alive the transition for a werewolf to vampire hybrid can't be completed. We all have heard Stefan doesn't come back until 1/2 through the season. My theory is that he is going to stay by Klaus' side, even if he lets him go, because he will be afraid that Klaus will follow him back to Mystic Falls and see Elena is not dead at all. I am scared for that episode when Klaus finds out she is alive. Did anyone else think that when Klaus was looking around the camp and stopped and was focusing in on something else that he could hear Damon, Elena, and Alaric? I for sure that he was going to go get them.
Caroline. Poor Caroline. "I am going to fix you." How do you fix a vampire??? I didn't think it was going to be her dad until Mrs. Lockwood kept saying, "It's Caroline." Then I nailed saying the "daddy" part at the very end. :) I don't miss Bonnie at all. It seems to convenient that she can always fix things. I want to see what happens when she isn't there to fix everything.
I hope they keep Matt as a human all the way through. We need at least a few characters who are human, and at least one who doesn't hate one or the other sides. It's nice to know that the ring was left to Elena for her children. I was very confused at the end of last season, and I know others were as well, if the ring would now work on her because she received John's soul. Made sense if it did. She died, no more need for doppelganger, his soul brought her back to life, ergo ring works. I foresee this somehow will be played back into that part when Klaus finds out she is alive. They will have to look for something to have her live again b/c ring doesn't work. Please don't turn that into "same story line, just different scenario Julie!" Lastly, his name is ALARIC. NOT RIC! I saw why Aunt Jenna called him it, short nickname for two love birds, but everyone else NEEDS TO STOP! Elena at his apartment was the real kicker on this situation for me. I will let Damon have a few slides, but I like the name Alaric. Everyone else is to "American" named. Now the last thing. I have a count going on days I have not seen Daniel Gillies back on the show...Two episodes, 14's ALREADY TOO LONG!

Werewolves can only be made into hybrids because the werewolf curse is genetic. It can only be passed down through the family for example the Lockwoods. Vampires aren't like that. Anyone can be turned into a vamp. I don't know if Klaus realized in that moment that Elena was still alive. At first I thought he knew. But then it seemed like he didn't. I don't think Klaus heard Elena, Damon and Rick in the forest like Stefen did. I loved the Matt scenes. He looked so sad when he was remembering Vikki. It was heartbreaking. And the offer to help Tyler with his transformation was sweet. I'm glad he knows whats going on and has something to do with the storylines. Ghost v. Ghost. I really want to know whats going on in this storyline. I hope there's more information soon. This episode was severely lacking my beloved Forwood. Tyler was soo sweet. Wondering where Caroline was. Telling his mom that she wasn't a prostitute. And that guy being Caroline's Dad. Holy Crap. When he opened the door I figured he'd be someone she knew but her dad. And if I remember correctly Caroline's Dad is gay. I don't want to impose and stereotypes but I'll say it anyway. They guy looked as hetero as you could get.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the show coming to a screeching halt whenever matt is on the tv screen.there's just something about that actor that is just so groan inducing. and I know for a fact, even though we're only 2 episodes in I cannot be the only person anxious for the return of thee almighty elijah.on a side note, this show needs to introduce more eye candy for us males. hopefully the female vampire from stephens past is a good looking broad. I want to swoon over a character just like all you females swoon over stefan and damon

Really, Matt? Hybrids can only be made from werewolves because a werewolf bite kills a vampire. Remember? They reminded people like you who forget when Stefan got bit and nearly died. Why would you think Klaus realized the Doppelganger was alive? Personally, I think the writers forgot to mention Klaus hearing Elena and company in the woods, as Stefan heard them. Start watching the show and stop scratching your balls.

Nice Hunger Games reference (:

Uncle jackass

Do I think Klaus knows Elena is still alive? Ans: Maybe. It's not conclusive. Is someone pulling Klaus's strings? Ans: Yes, whomever "he" is? Perhaps his non-biological dad? or someone as old as him. Did I predict Caroline's Dad would imprison her? Ans: No. I thought Liz said her ex-husband was gay? Good twist, of course... Do I understand how the whole bite thing works? Ans: from watching the triangles BTS clip... I don't think even the writers know. Perhaps a standard vampire can be turned to a hybrid only when bitten by a werewolf version Klaus? Or most likely @diyavd explains it succinctly. Does Elena know what she is doing? Ans: Nice admission, I don't she knows what she is doing. Am I interested in the Ghost Plot? Ans: Reminded me of Lost, with the ghosts of the dead. Are you just as confused? Is Alaric Back? Ans: I'm just assuming that's atypical of Alaric. Next week he'll be labeled Indiana Salzman. What was the best scene of the episode? Ans: Damon's twilight reference to monkeying with Elena across the trees. And then Elena saying he would more than likely drop her... I think it's a homage to book 2, or 6, where Damon either saves her from falls or carries her across trees.

klaus hybrid army didnt work because elena didn't actually die
