Hawaii Five-0 Review: Too Fast, Not Enough Furious

Ike Maka: Identity

While not as much fun as last week’s bromantic opening, we did get launched into the team again on Hawaii Five-0 here, with some one-on-one time as Danny was staying at Steve’s.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that Danny looks like he would be the worst house guest ever. I can’t imagine having someone stay with me who keeps the TV on all night, so loud that I could hear it clearly from my room. Steve is a stronger man than I am. I would have kicked Danny to the curb long before he had been there two weeks.

I guess “Homeless Danno” is Scott Cann’s new thing this season, as he has been in a couple of different hotels and almost rented a haunted apartment. Here’s hoping he can find a place to call his own so we can get back to some more original interactions between him and Steve.

Danno on the Coucho

As for the main case... being an unashamed lover of all things Fast and Furious, (who doesn't love Vin Diesel?!?) I was ready to sink my teeth into the seedy underbelly of street racing and restored cars in Hawaii.

Sadly, what we got was more fizzle than dazzle. Don’t get me wrong, the story was entertaining, but other than the one scene in the garage and Lori playing bait, we didn't get much in the way of the cars racing, just car theft.

Okay, the opening scene with the cops chasing the Camero was pretty awesome, but it looked like they were actually trying to play up the car theft ring angle right from that moment. When the police started popping open shipping containers and found the muscle cars inside my wife actually asked out loud: What, did they watch Gone in 60 Seconds?

This comment was made humorously ironic a little later when the dead guy turned out to be going by the last name of Raines (Nicholas Cage was Memphis Raines in the aforementioned movie, as everyone knows). My only wish would have been for more cars.

In retrospect, I wonder if there are really that many muscle cars in Hawaii, given that everything has to be shipped over. Anyone from the islands know?

Cars aside, I have to mention my new favorite sharp-shooter: Kono!

Who knew she was trained to as a sharpshooter? I thought she was going to be on the balcony and she was going to point her gun at the bad guy when he backed out of the door. I did not see a head shot coming! Nicely done, Kono.

There was only one thing that truly bugged me and that was Max and his constant ignoring of Steve and Danny. I won't even get into how stupid it was for him to be mad at these two over them not replying to his personal email. What I will mention is that both Steve and Danny have no problem confronting bad guys with weapons, yet neither could man up and follow Max into the next room and corner him for an answer?

Apparently the Medical Examiner out ranks Five-0, given how they went to the “kiss his butt” resolution method.

Finally, I leave you with one question from the Lori fan club: “How awesome was Lori as Sandy from Grease at the end?” I don’t blame Danny and Steve for scrambling out of the office, I would have been at the front of the line.

@ Jamie Q: “How awesome was Lori as Sandy from Grease at the end? A : Olivia Newton John was way hotter in that outfit 30 years ago. Lori's character was introduced as a profiler she's supposed to be manning the office not chasing criminals with Steve & Danno or going undercover. Is there some kind of a role reversal ? Like in next week's epi. Lori will be out with the guys rescuing Steve in North Korea. How about Kono ? Left to man the headquarters alone ? There is no development in the Lori character at all. Just HF0's resident Barbie.

Q: “How awesome was Lori as Sandy from Grease at the end? A: Not awesome. Her scenes are all so useless (what's her talent? what is she good at? I mean, besides stealing jobs from Kono i.e. undercover ops and running uselessly behind Steve and Danny all the time). And a scene like that doesn't help her cause much. Stuff like that just really makes her seem like she's there for her looks (which... let's be honest - is just alright... did anyone notice how much hotter Kono is than her, esp. this episode? just sayin.)
As a girl, I don't really appreciate the sole use of Lori's character as "slutty Wonder Woman" or "hot Sandy." The bulk of her lines/character development seem to be centered around that. And if that's all she's good for -- I say, peace out, Malibu Barbie. Go back to your dream house and leave the crime fighting to the Core 4!

To the author Jim G.--The muscle cars featured in the episode belonged to owners of a local car club in Hawaii, and from Pacific Muscle Car (pacificmusclecar.com). Despite everything having to be shipped over, Hawaii has car clubs of all types of vehicles-- imports, domestic, european, whatever. On any given weekend you will find a car show or car club cruise congregating at any given location, on nearly any Hawaiian island. Having a showroom quality muscle car isn't an exclusive thing around here, it's pretty common. In Hawaii, especially on the weekends, if it's sunny out (which is pretty often!) you will come across cars like the ones shown on Five O anywhere around the island just "cruzin". Despite being surrounded by water, we have a lot of "gear heads" around here!

Lori is useless and ugly like a 6th finger on a hand

i have one question to the poster who said Lori kicks ass. "How the heck is she a kick ass?"

correction: I just get a sick feeling in my stomach

I don't know how long I can make it with this Lori character. Monday nights used to be enjoyable or me. Now I just get a ice feeling in my stomach every time she comes on the screen. Why did they ruin my show? WHY?

Um,great episode overall!I think the writers finally recalled the point of this buddy show.Thank God they paired Steve up with Danny not Lori.We all saw a great intensity of chemistry between those 2 guys. In ep08 we saw Steve had dropped in on Danny randomly just for hanging out.In last night's we learned Danny'd been sleeping on Steve's couch for 2 weeks. They are not just co-workers but real friends.I'm genuinely touched by the change of their relationship, coz that reminded me of my BFF. At the end Steve even bought a pair of headphones for Danny as a gift, ooh that was very sweet of him.Did u guys note his facial expression when he's staring at Danny. That's so warm and tender. No doubt I believe Steve is a loyal friend and great brother. As a Danny girl,I wanna thank him for always having Danny's back and standing up for Danno, although most of the time he is over bossy and pushy.:-) BTW sniper Kono rocked me last 9t!GP is awesome! And I also like the way Steve was looking at her after she had shot the bad guy. That's the show I loved. I love Kono,I love all the 4 original characters who build this show and made it a success. However I don't mind adding some new characters who could bring sth to this show and work for the fans,to keep 50 fresh. But not this time, not this one! There's another reason why I love this show,in season 1 I can feel it has a 'soul',a 'heart' which season 2 lacks.Preparing a special graduation for Kono, attending Danny's ex-partner's funeral, watching baseball game together, all the happy family stuff was missing this season.I don't get why they had to ruin such beautiful things that made this show unique and remarkable. If I want to watch crime showes,I'd go to Criminal Minds or sth. I used to watch this show for fun and relaxing myself from reality, but now I am so tired of watching the bad written Lori character all around the screen as a queen bee,and yes I've seen the promo photoes of ep10.Lori again, all Lori, but no Kono.Come on,give me a break!!! Maybe this is the final time I leave my comments here,it was very nice of communicating with you all here, especially with Jim! Thank you, guys! And sorry for my poor english again!

Better episode. Less Lori. Kono and Chin both kick ass!! Great Steve and Danny moments. My prediction for next week, Jenna and Lori fight and they both die! :) I do like Jenna better bad and seeing her infrequently.

I look forward to Monday evenings ONLY because of Hawaii Five O. I went from an avid tv watcher to only watching 3 shows during the week; as I don't like reality shows. Hawaii Five O is a well written drama that has plenty of action, comedy and I would love to see a love connection between Lori and Steve. I love the new character of Lori and also enjoy seeing the comedy between Steve and Dano. I enjoy all of the characters and hope this show thrives for many more season. Please keep the new character as she adds a new avenue to the drama. Thanks. Darlene

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 9 Quotes

Danny: The waves keep crashing over and over
Steve: Some would call it soothing Danny
Danny: Some would call it Hawaiian Water Torture.

Not me, I would not partake of such in such a morally questionable activity. Other, on the other hand don't have my strength of character.
