Hawaii Five-0 Review: Out of The Pan, Into the Fryer

at . Comments

"Alaheo Pau'ole:" Gone Forever.

Was this entire Hawaii Five-0 episode pieced together from spare parts of better episodes? There were so many disjointed pieces that I nearly got lost along the way. Given the non-sequitur nature of the hour, I’m just going to break down the main points.

A Hawaiian Wedding

Lori and Danny Handcuffed: Does anyone have any idea what point there was to this storyline? Furthermore, why did Steve feel the need to drop they key off the balcony? It all felt totally out of place.

We have not seen any indication that Lori and Danny would be romantically linked. What the heck is the “Jersey Slip” and why do you need to be handcuffed to another person for it to work? Finally, what type of horrible police officer is Danny that his handcuff key is not on a key ring of any sort... and he only has one in his possession? While I know some might fault Lori for not having her keys, she didn't bring her handcuffs, remember. They were Danny's.

Vincent Fryer, Chief of Detectives: I will take back every bad thing I said about Fryer as the head of Internal Affairs if they will just send him back! Watching Tom Sizemore violate the Miranda Rights of suspects with his “tough as nails abusive cop” overacting caused me physical pain. I now know how many of you anti-Lori fans must feel. It took all my will power not to throw something at the TV when he would spew dialog such as I have a badge that says I can do what ever I want. Makes me want to hurl just remembering it.

Then, just in case we need a reason for Fryer to be in the episode, we learn he 's gotten promoted to Chief of Detectives. Huh? what’s the Frak is “Chief of Detectives?” And regardless of what Fryer said, the head of an entire division of police would not be out busting down doors.

Joe White and Steve at Odds: I really don’t care who Shelburn is anymore. I’m so tired of the ring-around-the-rosy conversations that Steve and Joe are having about it. The story barely moves forward. If Steve really wanted to know what Joe was up to, he would have had Kono or Lori pull his cell phone records to see who he has been talking to and the facts would come flooding out.

Then, you had Joe's last line of the episode: I was hoping you wouldn’t say that. It made one of my eyes twitch. Joe have you met Steve? He left his partner wearing handcuffs during a formalwear fitting; did you really think he was just going to drop the whole thing?

Man Shot But Alive: I will commend the twist and turns this case took. As a whole, it was a decent concept for an investigation. However, as mentioned above, it would have been a better story without Sizemore’s Fryer tainting the scenery. It would have also been nice to see the wife walk in on the husband fresh from his coma, as having Kono and Steve telling the woman that her son was really dead as the lead in for Chin-Ho’s wedding was odd to say the least.

Chin-Ho and Malia Got Married: That does lead us to the wedding. Ho'omaika'i (congratulations) to you both! I wish we had gotten more than four minutes of the episode dedicated to Chin-Ho and Malia. We had about 90 seconds of the guys in the fitting room and about two minutes of wedding montage.

We're going to have to wait until 2012 to find out more about Shelburn and/or what happen to Hiro Yoshimura as Hawaii Five-O takes a break for the holidays.

Mr. Kurtzman, a great holiday gift for the fans would be to come back with an idea of what story you want to tell in an episode and go with it. You might also consider dialing back the ridiculousness as well. My eyes may hurt for months from all the rolling they did this week.

Yo Lori, You're in Hawaii, get some sun...

Zia.I was talking about fanfic. The majority of fanfic writers have Steve and Danny in a relationship and the rest have Steve/Kono or Steve with some O/C. I just don't understand the obsession with relationships or pairing up the team with each other when they are just friends on the show. It's difficult to find a good story close to canon with the team just as friends. I'd also like the show to become a bit darker and a bit more realistic. Wasn't Lori meant to stop the guys from doing crazy things. What happened to that. Now she just joins in - well forced in because I still feel she was never needed on the show. I agree there are too many characters and not enough attention to any one of them. The funny moments between Steve and Danny also seem a bit forced lately.
I think the writers need to decide what kind of show they are writing for. They need a bit more balance in their writing and a bit more consistancy and I really wish they'd be a bit more realistic when it comes to medical stuff.

CBS just released two promo videos for H50 and they hardly show Lori. The one video introduces the 4 main characters, but ony shows a few clips of Lori in the middle. The other one, doesn't show her at all! It gives me hope that CBS is listening to us!!! I really hope they extended her contract for 4 more shows so they could figure out a storyline to WRITE HER OFF!!! It's getting harder to look forward to Mondays knowing she's going to be on my screen. I LOVE the core 4 and watch for them and their chemistry. Happy Holidays!

Sorry but this was the worst episode by far and I'm losing patience with a series I REALLY want to like. With this likeable cast and beautiful visuals, it's a shame, but here goes: 1. There are simply too many characters. We didn't need another lead besides Kono and first they added one last season and now this season. That one wasn't at all believable as a CIA agent and this one allegedly is a... profiler? Who nonetheless knows hand-to-hand combat and goes in on armed breaches? C'mon. 2. What was the point of introducing Terry O'Quinn's character and dragging out whatever the "secret" is? 3. I don't know what the hell is going on in the finale--this episode jumped around so much it's like they took unused parts of other episodes and then stitched them all together; there was no coherence. Sloppy. 4. Everybody on the team takes some time off to... invade North Korea (last time)? Seriously... 5. Lastly, the producers of the show need to decide on a tone. Caan is funny, but what we DON'T need is a musical cue every time we're about to get... funny'd. Ever notice that? As soon as the music changes, we know we're about to get a "cute" argument between Steve and Danny or a comical appearance by the big man. No need to beat the "funny-ness" over our heads like that. I'll hang on for a couple more episodes but changes need to be made. It should be darker. The humor could be darker. I'm not talking it has to be The Shield, but this finale and good parts of this season were just, quite frankly, a mess.

@Kelly....Hi, I understand most of your opinion. You prefer the action to the romance. What I don't understand is, who is thinking that Steve and Danny should be gay? I'm sure that is hinted in some sights because people are uncomfortable with a true caring relationship between two men, so they think they must be gay, usual that's because of their own insecurities. I have not seen any sign of this in the writing at all, and there are other shows that portray close relationships between people of the same sex which does not mean they are gay. I love the way they interact with each other. I think you are the only person who has ever brought that up on this site. I hope you change your mind and comment about the action on the new shows that are coming up next month.

@kelly - No offense but the only thing many care about is NOT pairing her with Steve.
The only thing many care about is getting rid of her. "She's great because she looks good with Steve!!" This is a bit odd for me. She might look good with Steve but only because Steve is gorgeous, so the credit goes to him. Well, she should be great because of her acting which is never going to happen, we all know that. like I said, no offense.

I am totally against romance on the show. I don't mind Catherine if she remains a recurring character but there shouldn't be any romance on the team. How can Steve remain professional if he's sleeping with one of his team.
The show is about adventure and crime not romance and I have no interest in who is sleeping with whome.
I usually love reading fanfic as it expands on what's missing on the show but I tend to avoid H50 fanfic as its predominately ship related. I don't understand the obsession with pairing off people and putting them in relationships when there is nothing on the show to indicate it. I also don't get why so many want Danny and Steve to be gay. Why is everything about sex. Guys can love each other and be very close (I've got 4 brothers)and it doesn't need to be sexual. For me Lori's character doesn't add anything to the show. But the only thing many care about is pairing her with Steve. She's great because she looks good with Steve!! I watch the show for the family feel between the team and the adventures they get embroiled in each week, not who's paired with whome or may love whome.

I began to see this show at the second season and I dont think Lori didnt fit. After, I saw the first season and I felt something was missing: Lori. I'm sorry, but I like her.
His character is much better than Catherine, who looks like a cat in heat, too hot always. That makes me think that the relationship with Steve is shallow, only sex, not deep. And Jenna was very hybrid and tasteless.
Lori is beautiful and professional.
I wish to stay.
I dont like Rachel for Danny. Many argue that it is a manipulative woman and Danny deserves better. I think they are right

Happy Holidays everyone. I am looking forward to the rest of the season also. That is something I know we all agree on.

I understand everyone now. I apologize for sounding rude and stuff, I'm just a hopeless romantic. But yes, I really do enjoy H5O and would be watching more. I understand everyone, how they feel, their opinions. Everyone has different views, and though I do like Lori, I understand why many of you don't. I also understand about not having a romance within the team. Thanks for answering my questions and listening to my opinions. Happy Holidays everyone and let's see how the next episode comes out.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 12 Quotes

Danny: Good, let bye-gones be bye-gones, maybe you want to hug it out or fist bump:
Fryer: No, let's just work the case.

Tong: Those are dummy grenades
Danny: Ok, hang on to this. [hands grenade, pulls pin] If it's a dummy you will be fine, we'll be outside.
Tong: Wait! Fine, it's live
Chin Ho: You've been hanging around Steve too long.
