Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

One more comment on the idea of Doris (please) McG being Shelburne - a character that WoFat is supposed to be afraid of (if, in fact, Shelburne is a character and Steve wasn't being deliberately misled by Joe and Hiro; could still be a covert op): a mother being a feared character; a mother leaving her children for 18 years; a mother staying in the shadows when her son, supposedly, is in danger. Oh sure. Give me a break. If the writers have this line, then they had better develop the best background story ever told on TV, because the idea is ludicrous.

I saw that NCIS LA is going to make another visit to the islands in the form of LL and Chris this time... I really hope they get more than 2 minutes of screen time!

@Zia..Wow I knew NCIS had a ton of viewers but I did not know the LA version did so well also. I think H50 is fine too but I always get worried when I read stuff. I know they win the 10 slot every monday so that has got to be a good sign. I am looking forward to this.

@amazingalex......Last Tuesday, NCIS got 21 million, and NCIS LA got 16 million. They come on at 8pm and 9pm respectively. It would be hard for a 10pm show to get that many, most people work in the morning, but H50 averages 10-12 million on new episodes, which is strong enough to keep it going. Exposure at other times and shows can't hurt, and might help. Everything I've read says that they are strong enough for a third season. The DVR showings for H50 do count, and they do take that in consideration. I think H50 is fine.

@Zia.. I dont watch NCIS but I will watch that one. And a big YES that I want very much for H50 to succeed. I have been reading some conflicting things online about H50's ratings being strong enough to continue into season 3. It seems to me they are so I am not sure what the talk is about. 14 million with dvr playback is alot. I wonder how many watch NCIS LA? Just to compare.

@azziria......thanks for letting us know. I had a feeling that there would be more then one repeat after 2.14. Hopefully this will mean we will get several new episodes in a row in February. I'm sure its not the end of the repeats until the end of the season. So if they show, 2.15, 2.16, and 2.17 in a row, then in February we will know for sure if Lori stays or not.

I don't just want more Chin and Kono. I wan't more of a mix. Why couldn't Kono or Chin go to LA with Steve. Why do we pretty much always get the 2 Asians paired up and the two white guys paired up. I'd love to see more Chin and Steve, or more Chin and Danny. But it looks like this show will end up like most shows out there who have more than 2 main characters. I don't just want the Steve/Danny show, or them getting the majority of the storylines. I want strong storylines for both Chin and Kono as well.

I also want to see more Chin and Kono and hope that they find another story line for them. They have given them more time in the show, and less of Lori in the last several episodes. I think Kono is a strong female, and has showed it more this season. If Lori leaves, and the story line with Joe comes to an end, then there will be more time for Chin and Kono. But I don't see that happening until next season. I love both Chin and Kono, and the show would not succeed without either of them. With that said, I am thrilled with the crossover of NCIS LA and H50. I do watch both, but if you don't, having 2 of our guys on 2 consecutive nights would be a great story line. I know Chin and Kono probably won't be in the one in LA, but this will help both shows. We want H50 to succeed don't we?
NCIS LA has the strongest lead in, if we get more people watching H50 then that benefits all of us.

I don't know if I will ever feel the same about this show even after Lori is gone, if in fact she is gone. This is the second attempt to add a white female character to the show and I'm sure it's not the last. A lot of people don't like a strong Asian female. Please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, trust Me I do. I've held this back for a long time, now I've said and I stand by it 100%.
