Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

@ Martinelli.....How did that get deleted? I tried looking back at the other reviews when you started the Lori one, but could not find it. I am not sure how far back that was. @amazingalex.......I'm tired of preaching about Lori also, its falling on deaf ears. If 2.17 won't be filmed until end of January, then it probably won't be shown until mid-February. I know I said I wanted the new episodes to start sooner, but now I know I was wrong. We will get 2.14, then at least one more re-run if not 2, then 2.15, and probably more reruns. I would prefer the new ones to be back to back, this does not help with dragging out the story lines. I think it would be better if they held off showing any new ones until they got caught up.

I just hope they are listening to the large majority of the fans, but they can do whatever they want no matter what the fans want.
I don't care how Lori leaves just leave. Killing someone off on tv doesn't mean they want come back.
If need a way for her to go, she is working for Wo Fat like almost everyone else and is killed by a team member to save another team member. My choice to take the shot would be a sniper, Steve or Kono.
Now I will try to ignore from now on.
@Lena can the 80% come to your party.

@amazingalex.....The day we hear that Lori is gone for good I give a party here promise! Yeah I think Steve is Shellburne and he don't know it yet I think Steve's father gave both Steve and Mary a nickname and told this to his closet friends that if anything would happens to him his friends would protect his kids. The only one Wo-Fat fears is Steve but Wo-Fat didn't know either who Shellburne is.

@jeffery, if Lori was killed off, the best scenario would be Wo Fat killing her cos Five-O and Joe White was doing something to piss him off, and Wo Fat killed her as an example. That sends Five-O over the edge, and Lori off the show.

@jschoi - I can't, the other one got deleted. Please register here so I can send it to you.

@Lena..Do you mean steve is shelburne but he does not know it? Joe said Shelburne is the only person who wo fat fears, yet wo fat kidnapped steve and tortured him...hmmmmm! I never even thought of steve. I did think of joe though.

@Lena...I am totally with you. It is like beating our heads up against a brick wall until we actually find out what is going on. The secrecy around it is strange though. Oh and I love the cliff idea!!! I would be perfectly fine with that scenario!! :)

Still think that Steve is Shellburne and that Joe is protecting him and that is the reason he could tell anything!

@amazingalex... I had with the talk about Lori also we all have to wait and see what they decide to do with her character in 2,17. I'll will only give comment if we get some news about her and that's it! From now I focus on episode 2.14 and hoping for a good promo tomorrow night. @Jeffrey Sean Keith...Who said that anyone has to kill her off. They can send her to the mainland back where she belongs I want her gone for good...They can throw her from a cliff I don't care but after 2,17 I don't want to see her again on H5O EVER!!!

@martinelli...could you give the link to your blog again, thought I'd bookmarked but I guess I didn't.
