Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

@ Martinelli.....Since Jim G. brought up the fact that it could be Mrs. McG, I have kind of thought that and still do. But, I would not mind if it was Kensi's father. I think that's a great twist that would not be expected. I could not google the teenage actor who plays young Steve. I did see a picture of him on the AOL rocks fan site. The first one looked nothing like him, but a second picture showed him with his hair darkened and cut a little shorter. That was better.

As long as were doing guessing games, let's do two polls who Shelbourne is and if Lori will stay, not if you want Her to or not!

Latest press release from 2.14 has the guest cast listed. No clues to Shelburne. GUEST CAST:
William Sadler …………………. John McGarrett
Claire van der Boom …………. Rachel Edwards
Teilor Grubbs ……………………. Grace Williams
Will Yun Lee ……………………………. Sang Min
Ian Anthony Dale ……………… Adam Noshimuri
Will Carlson ……………. Young Steve McGarrett
Lopaka Kapanui …………………….. Carol Hodge
Dean Kaneshiro ………………………. Lee Dolan
Dante Basco ……………………… Nicky Chang
Mericia Palma ……………………………… Nurse
William Makozak …………… Richard Detweiller
Executive Producer Peter Lenkov & David Wolkove
Christine Moore

We should do a guessing contest. We are pretty good at it, don't you think? Let's see who guesses who really Shelburn is.

@martinelli and @Zia ... If Shellburne is any of Steve parents then it has to be Steve's mom bc we saw the grave of Steve father a few times but we never saw Steve's mom her grave our that Steve visited his mother's grave and why would Peter Lenkov tweet Steve mom's name "Doris McGarrett".. and If it is for the safety of your childeren a mother can do everything even disappear for almost 20 years!but like you said it is TV and it is entertaining I like it when a serie have's a mystery keeps me coming back and I think alot of other fans to.

@Lena - Living in Europe myself, lol. Yeah, that uc was a good joke :)

@martinelli... I don't know everything wished it was true and I'm certainly not working for H5O. Living in Europe that is not even possible LOL...But most of the spoilers and interviews were given in June/July and August most people are on vacation round that time and don't read them but the cast is always back to work in July and that is the moment we get the most spoilers When I am on vacation I take my Lap-Top with me need to know the latest news. Yes I am addicted to this show!! LOL

Maybe Steve is Shellburne.....Maybe his dad gave Steve and Mary different names to protect them and that's what Joe is doing at the moment. just a thought that occurred to me.

@ Martinelli....That could be possible, since Joe is supposedly close to Kensi also, and he helped save her in Jakarta, when he was not suppose to know she was there. Maybe he is protecting her from this also, and her father is somehow connected to the Senior McG. Hopefully we get some answers in 2.14. @Kelly.....yes, you would think that a mother would not be able to stay away from her children for 20 yrs, but the Senior McG's mindset was that it was all to protect his family. Since this has gone on since the mother was supposedly killed in 1992, it does not seem that his strategy has worked. I could understand when they were children, but then why keep Steve from all this after he became a Navy Seal. Certainly he could trust him. This is why its TV, even if it is not so logical, its entertaining.

Shelburn might be Kensi's father. Who knows. Maybe Joe is keeping Kensi in the dark as he does with Steve. @Zia - What do you think?
