Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

I guess I wasn't clear when I said everyone, I meant the other 3 team member. Lori is a separate issue. 95-5 was to make a point and probably not accurate but it's still one sided. As a GP, DDK fan first I sometimes feel alone. I was in another state of mind when I said I wanted Wo Fat kill Steve, I'm smart enough to realize without him the show would not survive.

No luck with NCIS LA (

@Jim - My only problem with this theory is why was the Governor implicated in this whole thing? Let's not forget that McG Senior was investigating the Governor. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just hard for me to see the connections. But then again, it must be connected in some way to the McG family if Joe said it will damage his family/family's name. @jschoi - I totally agree with Zia. We might talk about AOL more than about the other characters but your "95% Alex 5% everyone else" calculation has nothing to do with reality. Just go back and take a look, we talk about everyone and I think at this review the main subject was Shelburn and Joe. Not to mention the other reviews, those were mostly about Lori, so ... I hope you'll change your mind.

@Jim G......I did not think of Steve's mom being Shelburne until you had mentioned it in your review. I do go back and forth between other choices, but I think that would be something that the writers would do. We will find out next Monday, hopefully we get more info then just the name of the person. It has been fun guessing, so I have to hand it to them. Good job on keeping the secret. I think it should get interesting with all the possibilities of where this leads. I hope we are not disappointed after this very long wait. Next week we will have more to talk about.

@jschoi....I'm sorry you feel that way. Yeah, I guess we talk about AOL alot, but its usually in-between new episodes. We did talk alot about who Shelburne was, what secret Joe is hiding besides Shelburne, Scott Caan, Adam Noshimuri, and the ever present arguement over Lori. So its not all AOL. There just hasn't been enough info to talk about anything that is progressing in the show since we have only had one new episode in the past 5 weeks. I hope you decide to continue to comment, I can't promise we won't talk about AOL again, because that would not be true. I wish you well.

Can't we all get along, This is a united H5O front, H5O forever!

@Jim...you could be right. I still think it is his dad. But the majority do think it is his mom. I even at one point thought it was joe so I am not so sure. We will find out soon enough.

Jimg

@martinelli I said in a review that I thought it was his mom because her death took place before the series began so it's the type of twist they could easily use and it be completely possible. Only evidence really is Joe's comment about "damage to his family" which could mean his family name, but could also mean him mom. I stand by the idea that the monkey-wrench in this story will be that Shelburne is his mom.. :)

Enough is enough is enough, I'm so done with this site but I'm going out swinging. This has gone from a balanced site about H50 to AOL site. 95% Alex 5% everyone else. Wo Fat could kill Steve at this point and I could give damn less.
Bye, Jen

@martinelli..you sneaky little bugger, LOL! I am not going to look! I talk a big game but I am quite the prude, ha ha! Hey if I can resist looking at alex I can certainly resist looking at scott. I dont think it is steves mom either. I did think it in the beginning but now I am not so sure anymore. I am a bit lost as to who it is. I still think his dad is alive and wo fat has him.
