Shirley MacLaine Cast on Downton Abbey Season 3 As...
Shirley MacLaine is headed overseas.
The veteran actress will join the cast of Downton Abbey next season, according to The Daily Beast, coming on board the BBC hit as the mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern).
With a trio of season two episodes yet to air in America - did you watch last night's heartbreaker? - producer on season three gets underway in a few weeks.
Said executive producer Gareth Neame in a statement: “My late grandfather directed Shirley MacLaine in Gambit in 1966, so it is a delight for me that she will be joining us on Downton Abbey.”

Two questions I have to go back and re-watch to find out:
1) What is the connection between Thomas and O'Brien -- besides them both being villians?
2) What ever happened to Patrick? He showed up all bandaged, etc. Was he proven a fake?

I love this production and the one liners Dame Maggie gets are priceless. She is a gem. I don't know about Shirley McLean though; that might be hard to take.

I agree with oldbiker1. A marvelous well acted series by which only the Brits can pull off. Shirley MacLaine? Come on...really? I thought she left this planet years ago...maybe its the Egypt connection? I think I'll pass. I'd rather "hear" a proper British tongue with grace than an American hard brash with no sense of respect. Mr. Fellows, you had me at 1 and 2.

Shirley MacLaine? Yer kiddin me... that's a major turnoff. Why does a successful (sorta) English production have to bring in another yank? The first season was brilliant. This second season is not so brilliant. With MacLaine in the third, I think I'll go back to Hopalong Cassidy movies.

However, I must say, Grantham has become an insufferable CAD...playing footsies with housemaid Jane...I mean really Sir!!!!

I can't wait to see the interaction between Shirley MacLaine's character and Maggie Smith's Violet. These two talented actresses should offer some real fireworks.
