Gossip Girl Exclusive: Joshua Safran on Major Season Finale Cliffhanger, Evolution of Dair

at . Comments

The Upper East Side will never be the same.

Speaking with TV Fanatic this afternoon, Gossip Girl executive producer Joshua Safran promised that the May 14 season finale culminates in a major cliffhanger that "changes the fabric of the show forever" and that fans will "realize without a doubt" the ensuing narratives it sets up for next fall ... with one possible exception.

"There's one particular character, you might not know what happens to them," he teased.

Hoping For a Break

He wouldn't say who, or what the unifying storyline of this spring might be, but he did promise me there is one: "All the [storylines] that have continued through the royal wedding are going to land in the same place," he said. "Starting this Monday, you're going to see everything start to come together."

No small feat, considering the number of balls in the air at the moment.

There's Serena, who's been relegated to the back burner for much of this winter, but who's about to begin an intriguing new arc, and who the as-yet-untitled season finale episode "revolves around quite heavily."

With Jack (Desmond Harrington) and Diana (Elizabeth Hurley) set to return, "doors are opened that Chuck was not expecting to be opened," Safran said. "Things happen that change his perspective on who he is."

Several Upper East Siders will be looking to show Ivy the door, meanwhile, while It-Girl-in-waiting Lola (Ella Rae Peck) has no interest in the high society world she was unknowingly born into.

"So much of what we've done over the years has involved outsiders trying to break into this world ... now we have both somebody on the inside in Ivy who doesn't really belong, and Lola, who wants nothing to do with it," Safran added, cryptically noting that the Rhodes girls "may or may not be drawn together by a common bond."

There's also the minor matter of Dan and Blair, a.k.a. Dair.

Hot Dair Action?!

The fact that Dair has become the most polarizing topic in Gossip Girl history isn't lost on its show-runner, who again insisted there is no "endgame" regarding the couple ... not that he'd tell us if there were.

"People always talk about endgames, but the thing is, if you have have a firm ending set in stone, everything you write runs into that wall," Safran said. "It has to be done with a shifting, malleable approach."

Sorry fans, I tried.

In the short term, we can still expect "the specter of Chuck" to continue looming over the new couple, he adds, with Dan possibly having "a hard time coming to terms with the stresses that brings."

At the same time, Dan "will continue help Blair rediscover Blair in a very sweet, good way," the EP reminded us, noting that she's finally broken the parameters of her relationships with Chuck and Louis.

Safran says Dan and Blair becoming a couple was the plan all season long, too.

"Last spring was the tease," he admitted. "We knew Dan and Blair were going to get together at some point this season, as Dan's feelings for her would only grow, and Blair would grow more aware of them."

"Blair gave up her control, her power in becoming a princess. Now that dream is over, for better or worse, and she's finally breaking free and finding out who she is. And from the beginning, Dan was the one basically saying 'I'll be here always, I accept whoever you are.'"

Currently filming the 24th and final episode of the fifth season, with the 18th airing Monday, Safran says fan backlash (or feedback in general) hasn't shaped any storylines because it logistically can't.

Not that he's unaware of the passions he's stirred in recent months.

"Say anything you want about me, it's my job, but please respect each other!" he joked, calling for civility among the respective camps as the show ramps up for its long-awaited spring run.

Wishful thinking, perhaps. But a nice sentiment.

I have read several statements made by Safran, and specifies that all the Dan and Blair together to end the series! However, in one or two statements, I think the portal in the United Kingdom, the same Safran did not rule out that Chuck and Blair to be together until the end of the series. Such contradictory statements by no means a professional position for a man such as Safran. If we follow the story that took place up to 100 episodes at the end of the series should be together - Serena and Dan, Chuck and Blair and Nate and Charlie / Jenny. However, it is now past! The only good thing that will happen by the end of this season is the clash of Serena and Blair. It should be hot and funny, as always.

Nate will be at the head of this. Maybe there's still a shot out there for Chuck and Blair. I guess we can't completely rule it out. Although that (Dair) does seem the case in all the interviews Safran has given. If I had it my way I think I'd want Blair and Chuck, Nate and Serena, and Vanessa and Dan together in the end. But that's just my opinion. I know everyone doesn't agree. I just hope our characters get back to the characters we all fell in love with, no matter who they are with or end up with. I started watching this show and stuck to it not because of ships but because I loved the characters.

@Zoran Perhaps that is the case. Like I said I don't mind Dair. I just don't understand where Safran is coming from with some of his statements about the two of them. Dan hasn't always understood Blair or actually even liked her. Chuck has. That doesn't mean that Dair shouldn't end up together, but why fabricate statements to back up a couple that you like. I love this show. I have every episode on DVD and I can tell anyone that Dan and Blair haven't been destined from the beginning. Yes, things happen and yes at some point it seemed inevitable that they would try a relationship out but not in the first season. I also just mainly want Blair back to the HBIC that she's always been. That's why I LOVE her character. I don't like what she's become. That's the sole reason I don't enjoy the show as much as I use to. It has nothing to do with Dair. I also read somewhere that the core four will be teaming up to possibly take multiple people down like we've seen them do before and that it will span over time not just one episode. That Nate will be at the head of this...Maybe we still have a shot at seeing Chuck and Blair together. I know it doesn't seem like it in the interviews that Safran is giving, but who knows. I guess there's a small shot. If I could have the couples together that I'd like I think it would be Chuck and Blair, Serena and Nate, Vanessa and Dan. I think they are the couples that have the most chemistry with each other. But that's just my opinion. I know it's not everyone's.

Yay! Dair sexy times!

@ GossipGirlFan13
I agree with you. Very unprofessional of Safran to discovered that pre-end series, although this should only happen in the next season. Perhaps he is dissatisfied with declining audiences for the series, but this is his fault. A few days ago I commented that perhaps there will be no happy ending series. And what would be a happy ending series? Dan and Serena together. Chuck and Blair together. After these changes in the series not to be excluded.

You're wrong. Dan is. Mr. Big, but Serena is Carrie. And literally - blonde. And she knows to write, she has its own column.

@Zoran I think it was terrible for him to ruin it too. Basically saying in the Perez interview that they were endgame...I mean at least let us Chair fans be dissapointed when it doesn't happen at the end of next season...Don't go on and ruin the whole next season for us now. I don't mind Dair together, but it would be nice to have Chair as endgame. They've had this connection since the very first episode. I don't understand what the writers and producers are doing. I'll see this series out, but I don't see it ending in the way I would like, unfortunately.
