HATE, HATE Hate the affair, it ads nothing to the story line and is a total waste of time. Need to focus more on Karen's performances, which are always great, especially when she was with her chorus friends. THAT is why we watch, not for the petty sidebars they spend way too much time on. ellis is a waste of time, so is tom's love life and julia's actions are just stupid. why do we care about any of them especially how cruel Ivy is to karen. only one you like in whole show is karen, writers need to FOCUS or show will not make it.

Loved the "showcase" presentation to potential backers. Anyone who has experienced any sort of Musical Theater or Theater knows who stressful it can be.
I was broken hearted for Julia's son..............I hope she doesn't have any more children! She doesn't deserve a family.
I thought this was a good episode. However I am getting so sick of Ivy. She whines that Derek treats her bad and now that her mom does too but yet Ivy treats Karen like crap. Ivy is one of those people that can not take it when she feels someone is being mean but yet she is worse than any body in the way that she treats Karen.
I really hope Ivy looses the lead.
Julia made a huge mistake in agreeing with Tom that Michael should be fired. I think that will be the start of the end of the musical. He was fantastic in that role. Tom is starting to annoy me because he is not much better than Ivy, he will fight to keep her as Marilyn when in reality she should not have the role and then he wanted Michael fired because he was sleeping with Julia. Julia is a big girl and should have handled the situation better.
I see the dilemma that Karen had, she wanted to stay for the workshop as if they every needed a new Marilyn she knew if she left the workshop she would blow her chance, but

@Ed seriously? You can't tell the difference between the power and depth of Florence's voice and then katherine McPhee's? There is no emotion in her voice at all. She could be singing any song. Like the AV Club review said- she can't even whoo convincingly. She is not good enough for an entire room to stand up and take notice, or a record guy say 'i love you'. She just sounds like a girl with a nice voice.

For me, the biggest waste of the show is casting the hyper-talented musical theatre performer Brian d'Arcy James as Julia's dorky chemistry teacher husband. I seriously hope we get to see him sing, but I dread the dream/fantasy sequence that will necessarily provoke it.

Yes, Ellis is REALLY annoying........
What I don't get is everyone harping on Julia's affair.......It's not like this hasn't been done on TV before.........Good lord think back to the 80's with Dallas and Dynasty............
No, I don't condone having affairs.......but it's a fact of life they happen.......AND in just the way it is being portrayed on the show.........
You have the remote right there beside you........if you don't like it change the channel.............
I LOVE smash! so good! the only thing that annoys me is Ellis. can a bus hit him or something?

The affair between Julia and Micheal didn't bother me. I don't think it hurt the story line either. The heartfelt reaction from her son, at the end was very moving and drove the point home that Julia realized the affair was a no no.

I TOTALLY agree. This plot line is stupid and we as viewers deserve better. It's an insult to our intelligence. They need to fire the writers of this show if they cannot come up with a better story line than this affair. I don't want to watch a soap opera. It really disgusted me last week to see this. I love Debra Messing. And I want to love her character also. She is the main reason I started watching this show.

I am glad to see I am not the only one that has stopped watching this waste of an hour. Do you think it will be cancelled soon?

The affair is kind of annoying, but Julia seemed to be suffering as last night's plot unfolded. It was a pretty good episode, but I see danger signs ahead for Tom. He has the perfect boyfriend, albeit not an exciting one who will have any crazy bits. It looks like Tom at least sleeps with Ivy's chorus boy friend. Leave well enough alone.

Oh, c'mon. Haven't you watched enough "soaps" to realize that Julia, who wants to get pregnant but has been unable to, will get pregnant via her affair with Michael?
That's how these things always work out. Haven't yet figured out what the plot "twist" will be that demonstrates that Michael, and only Michael, could be the baby's daddy. Strange blood type? Ultra-rare physical characteristic?
I'm sure they'll think of something.

I was glad to read this review...the affair has spoiled the show for me, although I do and will keep watching. Maybe it's the players rather than the characters, and it isn't because it's an affair, but I find the affair line unbelievable and, more so, uncomfortable to watch

Whoever thinks Kat's cover of "Shake it out" was bad you are in the small minority. It was brilliant. And all you guys that are complaining about who's the star get real. They have only had 7 episodes. There is lot to be discovered. And I don't think it could have been better cast. Megan and Kat are perfect for their roles.u

I think a better way to take the story arch with Julia & Michael would be to have Michael Kill her husband & then kill his wife as well. With them both outta the way they can be together.

I am really disappointed in the number of fans that expressed their support of Julia's affair (the second one no less.) I find that completely disgusting. Her husband is a good man who seems to support her in just about every way. He's supporting the adoption process, although it has been a long and complicated process. He showed up atthe adoption support group she went to. He went to the the workshop and showed his support. How in the world is this man not supporting her? And he has been with Julia through all of the ups and downs and stress her career probably entails, not Michael. He has been there to help raise their son, not Michael. Infidelity destroys lives and families, and sometimes careers. In no way, can Julia's affair with Michael be sen as something positive. That is so ridiculous, it's laughable. And what exactly have the supporters of this affair seen Michael's wife and young son do to deserve his lying and deceit? Look how the affair affected Julia's relationship with h
This is network tv boys and girls..... It is what it is....though I slum a few hours every week for Smash, POI and Body of Proof.....the really really good stuff will always be on pay cable....Masterpiece and AMC, FX .
No doubt the affair is boring, annoying and most of all......totally unnecessary .

The non-"musical" plot elements are starting to annoy me, especially Julia and Michael's affair. Now I'm mostly watching for the musical numbers, which are really excellent.

WHY do they think the viewing audience (who really wants to like this show, ffs) is going to think that guy is is the perfect Dimaggio? Or that McPhee's character has the potential to be a huge break-out musical theatre star??? Do the creators of this show think the audience (who, again, would get behind this if it they could!) is really stupid? the writing is awful, the characters are cliche and surface-y; the whole thing reeks of non-believability. I wish this show was on HBO or Showtime, it might have more balls if it was. bye bye Smash!

I agree that the affair is a bit to soapy for this particular show but as I stated last week..........in all reality, I am positive this goes on in the world of Broadway theater..........it's ridiculous to think it doesn't.........

I still love Julia and Michael's affair. I hope they keep it in the plot, I also agree that they could give more background to the marriage and the affair. Julia's husband although is a nice guy, does not support Julia and is not into the marriage and I wouldn't be surprised if he is cheating. Something is up. With a son acting out a husband that is not present, and a handsome friend, makes good tv. I love the music and drama, but Michael and Julia, I want more, more, more.
