Downton Abbey Season 3 Death: Who Will It Be?

by at . Comments

Downton Abbey will raise the stakes on season three, as producer Rebecca Eaton made it as clear as could be in a recent chat with The Orlando Sentinel:

"Somebody will be born, and somebody will die," Eaton told the newspaper, adding that death will befall "somebody pretty key in the cast.”

The other major piece of season three news, of course, concerns Shirley MacLaine coming on board as the mother of Lady Grantham. This character will arrive at a time when the family is in need of money.

“There are some wonderful scenes between [Maggie Smith] and Shirley MacLaine — Shirley MacLaine being as ditsy as ever,” previews Eaton. "Maggie barely restrain[ed] her sneer in having to deal with this American."

In closing Eaton promises a wedding between Matthew and Lady Mary, leading many to wonder if the aforementioned baby scoop is related. With Downton Abbey not returning to American television until January, we have plenty of time to ponder that possibility.

We're all supposed to assume the death will be Bates. However, I believe the death most likely will be Branson - in some reprisal or another. The birth - well the most likely candidate would I think be Anna Bates (following their one night of nuptial bliss). Whatever, can't wait!

Many say that someone important in the family will die. Remember that Tom Branson IS Lady Sybil's husband - so he is someone important and IN the family, AND the Irish Revolution started in 1919 and didn't end until 1921. He could EASILY be killed during fighting, unseen on screen, in Ireland, bringing Sybil home. Also, in the Christmas special, we know that Lady Sybil is pregnant, so I belive that that could easily be the baby born. (Of course, I always hoped that Anna would get pregnant by Bates right away and bring a baby-Bates into the world, but I think that that may be wishful thinking at this point). Smith could be the one to die. Or even Matthew. (If he does, Mary could have had a son beforehand and that son would be the infant Earl and therefore Mary would retain her money and the house and all that!).

I very much doubt that Tom Branson registers with Rebecca Eaton as a 'main cast memeber' - he's only been promoted to a main cast credit for S3.It's clear that Ms Eaton sees Matthew,Cora,LordG, Mary and Violet as main cast. I'd say you're death could come from one of those, though not Violet - too obvious. S3 picks up pretty quickly from the Xmas Episode - no time jump, so we have 18months from the beginning of 1920. I guess Sybil will have her baby by episode 3 as this will be about summer 1920. If JFB wants time out to be a movie star, surely Fellowes can just send her back to Ireland with her husband and kid.

Alan leech (Branson) has been promoted to main cast so I really hope he doesn't die. What if lord Grantham has a stroke or something and downton is thrown onto matthew? Could happen. I have a feeling that O' Brien's nephew will hit it off with Daisy. And I can't wait to see more of Mrs. Patmore and Cousin violets helarious remarks :)

I think that Branson should die of a heart attack, bringing back Sybil and his irish working class mother and baby. That could be fun watching the mum in law trying to help the servents and so on.
Sybil's baby has to be a boy. then when mary has her children they should all be girls, thus elevating the son of a lowly driver to the new lord grantham!
Want to see bates and anna have a baby. Bates comes back, takes over his old role as valet, and p*ssing off thomas as he gets demoted, making o'brian and thomas scheme more against them.
If anna has a baby there will be more tradgey in her life, maybe sybils baby lives and hers dies?
Also just to set the cat amongst the pidgeons Lady Edith should marry Sir Richard after a really nasty messy court case with Mary when he sues her for breach of contract (breaking the engagement). then american grandma is needed to come to downton for her cash!

It would fit that Branson be the one to die. Sybil will come home to the Abbey with the baby.I dread the thought of losing Lady Violet. She is so grand and so very droll. I wait for her every word. She amuses me greatly. Cannot wait for season 3. This show is masterful.

I seriously caonnt wait for season 3! I had that "oh no what am I going to do on Sunday nights now" moment last week but I agree that the finale didn't disappoint. I just hope they don't bring back any of that story line with Lord Grantham and the maid again. Ugh! I'm relying on you Ann to give me a heads up when you hear about when season 3 will start! :-)Vanessa

I don't want anyone to die though it is kind of inevitable that someone will I don't want it to be Branson though he wouldn't be in it much anyway I don't think. Oh well I guess we will have to wait and see!

Branson spoke of the Irish having their moment after WW1 ended. Well they did. from 1919 to 1921 they had the War of Independence and the bottom half became a free state in 1922. I'll bet Branson dies in that, which brings back Sybil and the baby. That or perhaps he is wounded or something and someone else dies. All I know is they just have to let the valet out of jail. I hope Maggie Smith stays on the show, but I wouldn't be surprised if they killed off her character. She is very old and it would be in keeping with the tragedies they've had so far. I'm glad Shirley MacLaine is coming on board. They need a new light to brighten things up. Soooo many Mother-in-laws though!
I begin to wonder if the middle sister will marry as Sybil has. "Beneath her" so to speak.
