Hawaii Five-O Review: Taking Out the Trash

at . Comments

"Ha'alele:" Abandoned

Allow me to start with the elephant in the room. This episode is the first of two episodes that will be affected by Alex O’Loughlin’s absence. That said, I have to give a nod to the writers and production staff for doing such a great job of adjusting this episode to deal with the missing McGarrett. I'm sure I speak for a lot of use when I say that I hope O'Loughlin's time off has helped him and I look forward to his return.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the amount of information we got on Max this week! What a revealing episode for him. When Masi Oka first joined the cast as Max Bergman back in Season One, I really didn't like the character at all. He was too quirky, the OCD and eccentricities really turned me off the character.

Chin at Work

What a long way we've come since then. Max has softened and they toned down his bazaar nature into more a “geeky” nature (his license plate is Warp 9 after all).

And after nearly two seasons on the show, we finally learned the answer to the question I asked when he started - why he is Asian but have the last name "Bergman." The answer was simple: he was adopted.

But then again, the answer wasn’t really simple was it? Not when his mother was a victim of the “Trash Man”. Max has been obsessed with the case ever since.

I really enjoyed the quid pro quo of Max asking Five-O to open the case as payment for the case he reopened for them. It showed depth and character that I would not have expected in 2010.

Speaking of quid pro quo – Kamekona’s missing shrimp truck seemed a bit tacked on. While it did offer some mild comedic relief, Danny’s initial rudeness to Kamekona had my wife commenting on what an ass he is.

How many times has Kamekona stepped up for Five-O? Danny should have at least picked up the phone and gotten some officers dedicated to the case for the man!

Thankfully Danny eased up a bit on the jackass-ery and recruited Chin Ho and Kono to help him find Kamekona’s truck, making everything right with him and team again. Except for Max, who went to pick Richard Branch (the man accused of being the serial killer) from jail.

I understood Max’s need to help Richard when he knew he was not the killer. Just as I’m sure that killing the real killer went a long way to making it feel like there was justice (or revenge) for his biological mother's death.

Losing a parent is hard, I can't imagine it would be easier on Max just because he didn't know his biological mother, just less direct emotions. I hope that helping Richard gave Max some closure on his mother's death.

Ironically, for having started as a character I disliked, Max truly redeemed himself this week. He is even featured in a few of the most memorable Hawaii Five-O quotes from the episode!

What did you think of Danny’s first turn as lead dog? Did you miss McGarrett the character or Alex the actor? Can you make it through one more episode without him? Comment below!

@amazingalex...Me too I am trilled we got another season and want many more love this serie so much! Three times is a charm that go's for Alex I am very happy for him he finally got what he deserves a TOP HIT SERIE! and he is perfect for the role as Steven McGarrett can not imagine that anyone else would have played McG.
Lucky for us Alex and Scott sign 7 years contract don't think the show will servive if one of them would leave. Danny will choose for Gracie for sure she means everything for Danny somehow they will come up with something that makes him stay on the Task Force Steve don't let him go without fighting for him.

@Kelly... I really don't know how they all will fit in these storylines in 45 min I have faith in Peter Lenkov he blow us away last year let's hope he will do the same this year.

@Zia... The press release for 2.23 is not out yet and I think we have to wait a bit longer for it they always do with the final press release to keep us in the dark about the gueststars. I am with you finding out who Shellburne is will have a big effect on Steve's life I hope in a good way so he can move on and start to progress his relationship with Cath. @jschoi.. I agree with you how can a father choose between his child and his job and this for the second time does the writers don't have better idea's for Danny in the finale then this repeat.

@Zia...I agree the H5O fans are more passionate about their serie then the NCIS LA once we can talk about our show for day's LOL. The cross-over is more to improve ratings and NCIS LA is the 2th most watch crime serie on TV so I hope it will help H5O to get better ratings which were great this season but more is always good! After May 14 July can not come soon enough for me we will share pics for sure. let us agree that if someone posts something in someone's inbox we tell that in here because i just saw this week I got a Alex promo pic from @amazingalex Thanks hon btw it's so little the inbox sign that i did not notice sorry! DDK is the most sweetest actor I've ever seen he is always willing to inform the fans maybe we get some amazing pics from him in the White House next Saterday.

Grrr I meant if the other shows were not cancelled we would NOT have been able to have AOL portray Steve Mcg. (we need an edit button here) He is Mcg!!!! He just rocks the character like no one else could have. Love his portrayal of him and all that comes with it!

@zia and lena...I am proud to now be a member of the H50 crew!! It is going to be a lonnng summer.....SIGH!! But your right we can chat here and try to figure out what season 3 is to bring for us!! I am just so happy for another season I cannot express it!! Happy for AOL that he finally has a successful show under his belt. I know when the other shows got cancelled it was hard on him but if they werent we would have gotten him as steve mcg!! :) I am not so sure about the danny thing. I dont know if it will be he has to choose between his job or his kid cause he would choose gracie. But scott has a 7 year contract so there has to be more to it. Maybe chin finds out malia is pregnant. I cant think of anything else that would distract him. Hmmm we have alot to figure out here. Only a little over a week before we start getting some answers!! :)

It seems a lot will be happening in the final episode. I hope they don't try and cram in too much and that we get a believable resolution to the Shelburn thing. Isn't there going to be some new villian who is even worse than WoFat. I'm excited about what they have in store for Kono and Chin. I'm very surprised that they are pretty much using the same problem for Danny, family versus his job. I wish the writers would give Danny something different than family angst. I don't want them to keep pulling the father card as if he's the only father who has a dangerous job.

The Danny/Gracie story is quite bothersome to me. Maybe I'm naive but how could one choose their job over their child. If that is what happens, hopefully that isn't, I would lose all respect for Danny.

I was thinking about the part of Danny having to make a decision between his job and Grace in the finale. I was wondering if there is any backlash from Rachel for the kidnapping, and she threatens to take away Danny's visits if he does not quit 5-0. Just a thought. I have not seen the press release yet for 2.23 to see if Rachel is in the finale. Has anyone else? I think Steve finding out who Shelburne really is, will have a big effect on his life. It could be his mother. I hope that we get more background on Kono and Chin. But that does sound like a lot to cover in one episode. I'm a little torn, I want to know what is going to happen, but sad to see the season end.

@Lena....I feel the same way. At least we know they will be back for another season. Glad they are getting some time off for themselves. I'm anxious to see how the other NCIS LA fans react to the crossover, although not as many of them comment as do the H50 fans. It will be great to talk about new episodes for 3 weeks. Then wait until July when they report back for any BTS pictures. We will all keep each other informed of any news. DDK will be on Live with Kelly on Tuesday and he is also at the Whitehouse on Saturday as part of some hollywood get together with the Obama's. He is such a sweetheart. He tweets well wishes for everyone a lot and always has a smile on his face. He's a great ambassador for the show.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Episode 20 Quotes

Danny: Sit down, don't stand up again.
Cal: Look I was working last night, you can check with my manager.
Danny: Ok, I'm going to check with your manager and if I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to come back here and put you in a mayonnaise jar.

Chin Ho: Hey, where's McGarrett?
Danny: He left a "Dear Danny" note on my desk this morning, he's off looking for Shelburn again.
