Gossip Girl Review: The Redemption of Bart Bass

at . Comments

Last week's Gossip Girl was one of the best episodes of the fifth season, mostly because it featured the gang urgently but humorously scheming together like old times, but also due to the bombshell in the closing moments.

The question was whether "The Fugitives" would build upon "Raiders of the Lost Art" and generate serious momentum heading into the season finale, or sweep everything under the rug in 2-3 lines of dialogue.

With Gossip Girl, you never know anymore, but despite a couple of plot holes bigger than the ones on Serena's top, tonight was by and large a success, keeping us on our toes and setting the stage for next Monday.

The biggest difference between tonight and the aftermath of the 100th episode, when Georgina was revealed as Gossip Girl, only to later unmasked as a mere stand-in, is the far-reaching consequences for the characters.

Bart Bass was not only redeemed somewhat - at least to the extent a person who fakes his own death and abandons his own family can be - he is returning to face the music now. That alone deserves due credit.

Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass Pic

Staging his own demise to protect Lily and Chuck from his business rival, whose hatchet man was none other than Chuck's PI Andrew Tyler? Logistically implausible and haphazardly written. Yet it still worked.

Bart was and is not an ideal father figure by any stretch of the imagination, but he's all Chuck has ... and before last Monday he had nothing. There's still a chance for a relationship now, which counts for something.

Dying/undying relatives seem to bring out Ed Westwick's acting chops, perhaps even more than Chuck's hilarious lost weekends and periods of unabashed hedonism. He was particularly good this evening.

Life works in mysterious ways, and perhaps Chuck stepping up to save his old man will be the catalyst for the old man finally appreciating his only son. As for breaking the news to Lily, good luck on that one Bart.

The elder Bass is right that he and Lily were on the outs at the time of his "death," but the interesting thing is that she and Rufus happen to be in a similarly rocky place right now. So all bets are off.

In addition to reuniting the Basses, Bart's resurrection also brought Ivy and Lola back into the fold. Wow. A threesome featuring those two leggy blondes would've felt incestuous, even if genetically ...

Never mind. Awkwardness aside, it would've been fun to see if the faux and real Rhodes could tag-team this seduce-and-destroy mission, especially since the way the storyline actually unraveled was a copout.

What's next for each of these would-be call girls open question, but as B said, in order to be back in the gang, you would've had to be in the gang at some point. So don't hold your breath, Ivy.

Lola may have a better shot at permanent scheme team membership, given her strengthening relationship with Nate ... who Chuck really should've told about Bart and Diana at the onset, honestly.

Once Chuck discovered Diana's connection to Bart and made the "deal" to ship her out of town in exchange for incredibly valuable information, wouldn't you think he'd tell Nate, vendetta or not?

A minor criticism, really, in an episode that did much more right than wrong. Nate also did the right thing, eventually, by letting Diana walk and hopefully closing this chapter of Gossip Girl for good.

Perhaps most significantly, the second coming of Bart brought Chuck closer to Blair, who enlisted Serena's help as she continued to be there (and struggle with her feelings for) Dan, who invited her to Rome.

Serena Under Fire

Blair has a lot on her plate (everything but gelato, it seems), and from the ending scene tonight - nearly as shocking as last week's, albeit in a different way - her relationship with S is about to take a very dark turn.

Gossip Girl certainly returned with a bang, didn't she? Did anyone else miss her a little?

Serena sending in Blair's diary page was a BRUTAL move, leaving Waldorf and surely many viewers stunned. What did she write after the bit about Dan? Will the blacked-out portions be posted next week?

It would've been a surprise even if the two had been at each other's throats, but Blair and Serena's fun ruse tonight - S even wore a headband as her stand-in! - made the ensuing bombshell even more shocking.

The scene in which S did B a major solid in salvaging Dair's trip to Italy (props for Dorota's hilarious last-minute save) upon Eleanor's return, could also be the undoing of their lifelong friendship. Amazing.

Apparently Serena's jealousy, incredulity at B for not reciprocating Dan's love, and general lack of direction in life reached critical mass when she got a little too excited playing Dan's girlfriend again.

There will likely be extensive debate over her actions in selling out Blair - if she in fact did, as you can never rule out a frame job on this show - but no one will accuse her of being boring certainly.

When B's claws also come out, this could be a cat fight for the ages.

All the Gossip Girl spoilers we've posted up until now have been more or less on point. Blair must make a choice between Chuck and Dan, with Serena possibly throwing a wrench into her plans.

The two men in B's life are polar opposites, but each has captured her heart in their own way. From the looks of the season finale promos, though, her BFF may have her sights on one of them.

Blair says she's not ready to say "I love you" back to Dan, because she wants it to mean forever. Will that moment come soon, if ever, for Dair? Will those 270 meals in Rome possibly take place?

In the Great 'Ship War 2012, it all comes down to next week.

Upper East Side vs. Brooklyn. Mogul vs. Author. Dark Knight vs. Muppet (how unreal was his hair after getting out of the shower?). Who will B choose, and will her friendship with S ever survive it?

Who knows, but kudos to the show on two solid installments that set up the cliffhanger without feeling like filler. Season 5 has been uneven at times, but its conclusion is clearly not to be missed.

Before we turn it over to you, here's the CW's first tease of "The Return of the Ring" and the longer, better Canadian promo as well. Check them both out and see what you think:

Okay I commented on another article, but here it is again:
The spoilers say that Chucks 'say yes' motto comes back in the finale but in a way he doesn't expect + THE ring is back. Besides that: the episode Chuck wanted to propose to Blair they weren't in such good place as well (the hotel drama) so it isn't impossible that there WILL be a proposal.
My theory was the following: Blair proposes to Chuck. It would make sense, the say-yes motto in a way he doesn't expect, Blair who finally feels powerful and strong and stuff (everything she always wanted to be, remember), the return of the ring, the clear decision of Blair for one of the two men in her life etc. I also heard the "I'm not mr. Blair Waldorf, I'm Chuck Bass", which would make sense if Blair would propose to Chuck, since Chuck seems the kind of man who doesn't want to be proposed but proposes himself. Okay so what I think happens next is season 3 finale all over again but in a good way this time. They have a fight, she says that he should think about it and meet her on the rooftop if he wants to be with her etc. End scene of the finale is a scene on the roof top where Chuck shows up while Blair waits for him and he finally says yes (the say yes motto). That's what I'm thinking :) Maybe she initially even leaves with Dan or intents to and Chuck follows her??? Would explain the over-seas thing as well. And about the diary....we all know Serena wasn't okay with this relationship even if she acted to be. It would make sense if she read Blairs diary to know how Blair really feels and to know if she ever would have a chance again with Dan. Maybe she photographed the pages or scanned them so she could read them quietly without being interrupted by Blair. That's why the pages where on her laptop, not for any bad intention, but now Gossip Girl has the laptop and found the pages.

I agree with you, it is possible that is a Serena dream. But I do not understand something else. If sex between Serena and Dan was a dream (someone's dream), then why Dan tells Serena to a Canadian video: There is no us Serena ...? There is discontinued, but if there was sex, then it makes sense that conversation between Serena and Dan. Serena is likely to come to convince Dan that his relationship with Blair is over, because the two of them had sex. Of course, silly Humphrey reluctant, believing in Blair. As I said, it needs more information.

i dont understand... why is chuck so mad at blair telling her he doesnt want to play games and that hes not 'mr blair waldorf' and then he has a ring in this episode? why do they have to cram everything into the season finale, blair is with dan..an hour later chuck is proposing to her..REALLY??? anyone got any ideas about why chuck has the ring? is he going to propose?

Is it just me or I don't see the connection with Chuck && Blair? Blair is over Chuck she still cares about him but only as friends. DAIR = ENDGAME : )

Can I just say, that this is an incredibly well written review. Really. It communicates perfectly the significance of the events of the episode, and remains neutral when discussing Dan/Chuck. Props to Steve Marsi!

Seriously - dans hair was sooo distracting i missed like two minutes and had to rewind, regardless, LOVED the episode, 2 great ones in a row! Chair! Chair! Chair!

I like this theory.

So, my dream scenario goes down like this: Blair chooses Chuck, obviously, but he rejects her. She tells him to meet her at the top of Empire (aka 3×22 at the top of the Empire State building). And hopefully, the ring will be involved.

Oh my, there's so much going on in my head right now. OK... I don't believe it was Serena who send in Blair's diary. She may have, however, took the picture at that time she had GG's laptop, but then decided not to use it. Now GG found it and used it to hurt their friendship. That's why Serena sat by the stairs all devastated.
As for the Derena sex scene, I don't think it is a dream, because Dan then blames Serena for telling him Dair is over.
I also doubt the ring scene is a dream since (I hope) they won't name the whole episode based on a dream.
It's highly unlikely that Blair will choose Dan. And more unlikely that they'll to Rome together.
As for Chuck and Blair, the previews give us hardly any hope for their reunion. But then again, Blair is going to make a definite choice. There's the casino scene. The ring. The Harry Winston openning in Shanghai.
So, my dream scenario goes down like this: Blair chooses Chuck, obviously, but he rejects her. She tells him to meet her at the top of Empire (aka 3×22 at the top of the Empire State building). And hopefully, the ring will be involved.

I Agree with Marissa but I think it could be Serena's dream.
The ring in the promo is that the same one?

Gossip Girl Season 5 Episode 23 Quotes

Blair: That was your agent. She wants you to reconsider the program in Rome. Which is odd, because you told me they went with someone else.
Dan: Ah, well, yesterday when you ended up with Chuck I was a little nervous about leaving for the whole summer. And I know you told me there were other people there and it was not romantic, but... come on. It's Chuck.
Blair: So you lied to me.
Dan: I figured you would just think I was some jealous freak if I told the truth.
Blair: Well maybe because you are. But you don't have to be. You have nothing to worry about. Take the offer. It's an amazing opportunity and I would never stand in the way of it.
Dan: It means the entire summer apart.
Blair: But it's not like I can't come visit. Rome is just two glasses of chardonnay away.

Chuck: So the car accident was real?
Bart: I was lucky to survive it. But it wasn't an accident. I'd been threatened.
Chuck: By who?
Bart: A very powerful competitor of mine. I had information on some transactions of his that could have put him away for a very long time. But his threats didn't work.
Chuck: They had someone ram your limo with a truck? Dad, You could have gone to the police. You didn't have to—
Bart: Yes, I did. He'd made it quite clear that both you and Lily were fair game. Once I realized his threats weren't empty, the only way out was to make him think he'd already one. Once I got to the hospital tonight I figured that would be my best chance.
Chuck: So what, you just paid some doctors to switch off the machines? Hope Lily was crying so much that she wouldn't notice you were actually still breathing? What did we bury in that coffin?
Bart: Charles, I am here with you now, trying to explain.
