Grey's Anatomy Review: Unanswered Fates

at . Comments

Seriously? Seriously.

I need a few minutes to catch my breath after what can be remembered as one of the most emotional and gory finales in Grey’s Anatomy history.

We were warned. We knew this episode was going to be rough. Someone was going to die. The only problem? Knowing it’s going to happen doesn’t make it any easier. So let’s get to it for the last time this season. Put down those tissues, time to discuss “Flight."

Meredith Post-Crash

At Seattle Grace Mercy West Death. Back at the hospital, Webber prepared to take the residents to his annual dinner to celebrate. Ben and Bailey decided to get married and Callie was waiting for her wife to come home. Alex made the decision to go to Hopkins because he needs to know he is good without Arizona holding his hand.

Teddy was offered an incredible opportunity as the chief of Medcom. She didn’t want to take it because she can’t leave Owen in the state he is in. Talk about loyalty. Just a few episodes ago, these two weren’t even talking. This just shows how strong of a friendship Owen and Teddy share. Of course, Owen recognized what Teddy was doing and fired her so she would have to take the job.

How sad of a scene was it to watch Webber, April, Jackson and Alex wait for Meredith and Cristina. Little do they know...

Cristina in Agony

And Then There Were Five. Leading into this episode, I had constantly checked the comments on for the Grey’s Anatomy previews to see who the fans thought were going to die. Top of the list on the death poll? Arizona and April. In reality? Lexie Grey.

RIP Little Grey. In an extremely sad farewell (and in the first 20 minutes!) Lexie Grey died. What an emotional scene! Mark held her hand and confessed his love for her and that they were meant to be. The acting in this scene was incredible. Kudos to Eric Dane for his stellar performance.

So what is the fallout of losing Little Grey? Meredith has now lost another family member, Mark has lost the love of his life and Derek has lost his little sis. I’m not sure how you come back from this.

I have to be honest, I was pretty surprised it was Lexie. I knew there was a chance, but I really didn’t expect it. Will this lead to Meredith back to a dark and twisty place? The one positive to losing Lexie was that it led to a sweet exchange between her and the man she loved.

“I’ve always been in love with you. I’ll always be in love with you."

Damaged Goods. Lexie wasn’t the only one with injuries. Mark needed a make shift surgery, Cristina’s shoulder was out of place, Meredith had a piece of plane in her leg and Derek’s hand is most definitely broken. The most gory? Arizona’s bone peaking out of her leg.

So Where Does This Leave Us? Shonda had made it clear that at the time of filming, no contracts had been signed. This means the fate of all of our favorite docs are up in the air. So what can we expect next season?

Derek’s hand. Will he be able to operate? Will Mark make it until they are found? Cristina is sure she wants to leave Seattle. Jackson chose Tulane. April and Teddy do not have jobs at Seattle anymore. Alex is headed to Hopkins.

Finale Standards? If there is one thing that Grey’s Anatomy does right, it is finales. They are always intense and always emotional. Season eight was a bit of a challenge. Because of not knowing if the actors would be returning, we were left with an open ending. It worked and it didn’t. It felt a bit like the writers were jumping back and forth to hit each story to make sure us viewers know their fates are questionable.

It’s a big cast and it’s hard to coordinate. It would have worked better if SGH was just shown in the beginning and the end; Richard and the other residents waiting at dinner and Owen firing Teddy. Other than that, another great ending to a solid season.

Some After Thoughts

  • I loved the flashback to the pilot episode in the beginning and the voice over at the end mimicking Webber’s words. Ah, nostalgia.
  • How gory was this episode? I had to look away when Arizona showed her bone popping out.
  • In an emotionally charged episode, the writers still found time to throw in a couple jokes. Thank you for that!
  • How good is Yang in a crisis? PS. How funny was she with her shoe?
  • How long until Owen saves them?

So what did you think, TV Fanatics? Was the finale everything you hoped for or did it fall short in comparison to the other season endings? Will everyone else survive the plane crash? Who will return to our beloved TV screen next season? Were you surprised that it was Lexie?

It’s time to say goodbye until next season. Check out the Grey’s Anatomy quotes for the best lines from the hour and make sure to check back for the Grey’s Anatomy Round Table. Hit the comments and let us know what you thought of “Flight” and the death of Lexie Grey. Chyler Leigh, you will most definitely be missed.

Okay so Lexie dies. Thank goodness it was not Derek, Meredith, Cristina, Alex, Torres or Arizona. Those characters are much more important than Lexie, April or Avery. The finales of Grey's are always the most exciting episodes for me. Shonda... awesome job. I do miss George though, and I disagree with many saying there are too many deaths. If a character must leave an episode, dying is good closure. I still wonder what Izzy is up to. Maybe she should have died as well. Then I wouldn't be so confused as to where she is. I miss the original interns; Izzy and George... the others added later; Lexie, April, Avery etc... who cares... not the end of the world. I'm ready for next season! If Lexie does make it through somehow... then great that would be interesting. Mark's new girlfriend is irritating, and Lexie would be better with him. I still wish Denny and Izzy were both healthy and together... or George and Izzy... or Alex and Izzy.. I agree the plane crash was a bit unrealistic. I felt like I was watching LOST.

Lexie dying was a huge mistake. Maybe the new season should have her "not dead:, just unconscious.

I'm not happy about Lexie's death. She was one of my faves. I'll continue watching til the end of the show. So glad that Derek and Meredith are still on. I hate that they kill people off this show. But I understand why the actors, whose characters are killed off, leave. Some want to pursue movie careers or want to be with their families.

And with that terrible and BORING season finale, my interest in Grey's has officially ended. Kill off Lexie, fine. But please at least give her a heart-felt goodbye to Meredith as well as Mark! I had hoped for a second there Mark would die too. That would have actually made it far more interesting than what they did, which was boring and predictable. The ONLY redeeming thing of that whole episode was how KICK-ASS Christina was! And her shoe! The rest was just garbage, like Shonda phoned it in.

Okay. Callie said it best tonight: Life changes in an instant. Turns on a dime. This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy). I know this season’s finale had some surprises for viewers and the exit of Kim Raver was one of the big ones. But Kim’s series option was up and she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation. It’s been a pleasure working with someone as talented and funny and kind as Kim; everyone is going to miss her terribly. I like to imagine that Teddy is still out there in the Grey’s Anatomy universe, running Army Medical Command and building a new life. I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future. I'd write more but I'm honestly too sad. I don't like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime. Thanks for watching Season Eight. We are, as always, grateful that you joined us for the ride

Why did lexie have to die now her and mark will never be together this is izzy and alex all over again but worse just cryed the whole way through actuall crying sound and everything just like if it was my sister that had dies :*(

They could have taken Arizona or April and I doubt many would be upset. Lexie will be a GREAT loss, she was a fan favorite in my circle of friends. Phonminal acting in the scene between Mark and Lexie.

I'm still reeling from the fact that they killed off Lexie, so my question is WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY????? She was a positive for anyone around there and she had a photographic memory which helped all the people there. I will surely miss her character. Now we have to wait for the season premiere as they left them in woods. Now the question is when they come back is everyone going to leave for their perspective new hospitals?

I wont watch Greys Anatomy anymore, lexie´s death sucked!!!! i cried like a baby watching the season finale... Lexie was my favourite character, and she deserved to have her happy ending!

I finally got to like Meredith this last season (almost stopped watching the show because she irritated me so much from the beginning!) and now, with Lexie's death she will probably go into some dark place and it may be the end of the show for me. I've always said that I don't want to be taken to Seattle Grace for surgery and last night's drama in the operating room with Teddy's heart-felt speech compounded that thought. PLEASE...stop all the stupid talk over bodies being operated on...I mean really...concentrate on what you are doing!! lol
